Answer:
Emest had wise thoughts in his mind. College professors, and active men of cities came to see and converse with him. He behaved with gentle sincerity. He spoke from his heart. Sometime his face would brighten on the visitor His words harmonised with his deeds. 

अर्नेस्ट के अपने मस्तिष्क में विवेकपूर्ण विचार थे। कॉलेज के प्रोफेसर व शहरों के सक्रिय व्यक्ति उससे मिलने व वार्ता करने आते थे। वह विनम्र सद्भाव से व्यवहार करता था। वह अपने हृदय से बोलता था। कभी-कभी उसका चेहरा आगंतुक पर चमक बिखेरने लगता। उसके शब्दों व कार्यों में समानता थी।

Emest thought the poet was like the Stone Face because he was moved by the living images flung out of the poet's mind.

What made the poet proclaim Ernest was the Stone, Face?

Answer:
Ernest preached what he practised. He had a life of good deeds and selfless love. He had mild, sweet and thoughtful face with white hair diffused about it and with white brows. When white mists appeared around the Great Stone Face, the poet found resemblance in their faces. This made the poet proclaim Ernest was the Stone Face.

Read the given passages carefully and answer the questions that follow :

Passage 1.

The years hurried on, and brought white hairs upon the head of Emest, and made wrinkles across his forehead and furrows in his cheeks. He was an old man. But not in vain had he grown old; more numerous than the white hairs on his head were the wise thoughts in his mind And Emest had ceased to be obscure. Unsought for, undesired, had come the fame which so many seek.

He had become famous beyond the limits of the valley. College professors, and even the active men of cities, came from far to see and converse with Emest, and he received them with gentle sincerity, and spoke freely with them of whatever came uppermost, or lay deepest in his heart or their own. While they talked together, his face would brighten, unawares, and shine upon them, as with a mild evening light

As Ernest listened to the poet, he imagined that the Great Stone Face was bending forward to listen too. He gazed into the poet's eyes. "Who are you, my gifted guest ?” he asked. The poet laid his finger on the book that Ernest had been reading "You have read these poems," said he.

"You know me, then, for I wrote them." Again and again, Ernest examined the poet's features, he turned towards the Great Stone Face then back. He shook his head and sighed. "Why are you sad ?" inquired the poet. “Because," replied Ernest, "All through life I have awaited the fulfilment of a prophecy, and when I read these poems, I hoped that it might be fulfilled in you."

Passage 3.

Ernest threw a look of familiar kindness around upon his audience. He began to speak to the people what was in his heart and mind. His words had power, because they agreed with his thoughts; and his thoughts had reality and depth, because they harmonised with the life which he had always lived. It was not mere breath that the preacher uttered; they were the words of life.

A life of good deeds and selfless love was melted into them. The poet, as he listened, felt that thelife and character of Ernest were a nobler strain of poetry than he had ever written. His eyes filled with tears and he said to himself that never | was there so worthy a sage as that mild, sweet, thoughtful face, with the glory of white hair diffused about it.

वर्ष शीघ्रता से निकलते गए और अर्नेस्ट के सिर पर सफेद बाल उग आए और उसके ललाट पर झुर्रियाँ बन गई और उसके गालों में रेखाएँ। वह एक वृद्ध व्यक्ति था। लेकिन व्यर्थ में ही वह बूढ़ा नहीं हो गया था; उसके सिर के बालों से अधिक बड़ी संख्या उसके मस्तिष्क में विचार थे। और अर्नेस्ट का अप्रसिद्धि में रहना समाप्त हो चुका था। बिना कोशिश के, बिना चाहे वह प्रसिद्धि आ चुकी थी जिसे बहुत से तलाशते हैं, वह घाटी की सीमा से परे तक प्रसिद्ध बन चुका था।

कवि उसकी बगल में बैठ गया और उसने व अर्नेस्ट ने एकसाथ बातें कीं। पहले कभी कवि ने अर्नेस्ट जैसे व्यक्ति से बातें नहीं की थीं, इतना बुद्धिमान, और सज्जन, और दयालु। दूसरी तरफ, अर्नेस्ट कवि के मस्तिष्क से बाहर आये जीवन्त बिम्ब-चित्रण से प्रभावित था। जब अर्नेस्ट कवि को सुन रहा था, तो उसने कल्पना की कि विशाल प्रस्तर चेहरा भी सुनने के लिए आगे झुका हुआ था। वह कवि की आँखों में टकटकी लगाकर देख रहा था।

चेहरा तलाशने की आशा क्यों करते हैं?"  कवि उदासी से बोला और उसकी आँखें आँसुओं से गीली हो गई थीं। उसी प्रकार से अर्नेस्ट की आँखें भी गीली हो गई थीं। सूर्यास्त के समय, जैसे कि लम्बे समय से उसकी आदत थी, अर्नेस्ट को अपने पड़ोसियों के समूह को खुली हवा में सम्बोधित करना था। वह और कवि साथ-साथ सभा-स्थल हाथ में हाथ लिये गये। वहाँ से विशाल प्रस्तर चेहरे को देखा जा सकता था। 

अर्नेस्ट ने अपने श्रोतागण पर जानी-पहचानी नजर डाली। उसने उसके दिल व दिमाग में जो कुछ था उसे लोगों को बताना आरम्भ किया। उसके शब्दों में शक्ति थी, क्योंकि वे उसके विचारों से सहमत थे और उसके विचारों में यथार्थ व गहरापन था, क्योंकि वे उस जीवन से मेल खाते थे जो वह हमेशा जीता था।

ये केवल श्वास (शब्द) नहीं थे जो धर्मोपदेशक बोलता था; वे जीवन के शब्द थे। एक शुभ कर्मों व नि:स्वार्थ प्रेम का जीवन जो उनमें द्रवित हो गया था। कवि ने, जैसे ही सुना, अनुभूति की कि अर्नेस्ट का जीवन व चरित्र उसकी अब तक की काव्य-रचना से अधिक श्रेष्ठ राग की कविता थी। 

उसकी आँखें आँसुओं से भर गईं और उसने स्वयं से कहा कि कभी भी इतना योग्य मनीषी नहीं हुआ था जितना कि यह मदुल, मधुर व विचारशील चेहरा जो अपने फैले हुए श्वेत बालों के यश के साथ था। दूरी पर, किन्तु स्पष्ट दृष्टिगोचर होते हुए, सूर्यास्त की स्वर्णिम रोशनी में ऊपर ऊँचे, विशाल प्रस्तर चेहरा अपने चारों ओर श्वेत कोहरे के साथ, अर्नेस्ट की भौंहों के चारों ओर के श्वेत बालों के जैसे, प्रकट हुआ।

ठीक उस ही क्षण, अर्नेस्ट के चेहरे ने इतनी भव्य अभिव्यक्ति ले ली कि कवि ने भावुक होकर अपने हाथ ऊपर उठाये और चिल्लाया। "देखो! देखो! अर्नेस्ट स्वयं विशाल प्रस्तर चेहरे का प्रतिरूप है।" फिर सभी लोगों ने देखा, और पाया कि कवि ने जो कहा था वह सत्य था। भविष्यवाणी पूर्ण हो गई थी। किन्तु अर्नेस्ट ने, जो उसे कहना था, को समाप्त कर, कवि का हाथ थामा, और धीरे-धीरे घर की ओर चलने लगा, अभी भी यह आशा करते हुए कि उससे अधिक बुद्धिमान व श्रेष्ठ व्यक्ति शीघ्र ही प्रकट होगा, जिसका चेहरा विशाल प्रस्तर चेहरे के सादृश्य होगा।
