Read the given passages carefully and answer the questions that follow:

Passage 1.

Of all the emotions which surged through me as I stood on the summit of Everest, looking over miles of panorama below us, the dominant one I think was humility. The physical in me seemed to say, 'Thank God, it's all over!" However, instead of being jubilant, there was a tinge of sadness.

Was it because I had already done the 'ultimate' in climbing and there would be nothing higher to climb and all roads hereafter would lead down? By climbing the summit of Everest you are overwhelmed by a deep sense of joy and thankfulness. It is a joy which lasts a lifetime. The experience changes you completely. The man who has been to the mountains is never the same again.

Mountains are nature at its best. Their beauty and majesty pose a great challenge, and like many, I believe that mountains are a means of communion with God Once having granted this, the question remains: Why Everest? Because it is the highest, the mightiest and has defied many previous attempts. It takes the last ounce of one's energy. It is a brutal struggle with rock and ice.

Once taken up, it cannot be given up halfway even when one's life is at stake. The passage back is as difficult as the passage onwards. And then, when the summit is climbed, there is the exhilaration, the joy of having done something, the sense of a battle fought and won. There is a feeling of victory and of happiness.

I Looking round from the summit you tell yourself that it was worthwhile. Other silvery peaks appear through the clouds. If you are lucky the sun may be on them. The surrounding peaks look like a jewelled necklace around the neck of your summit.

Below, you see vast valleys sloping into the distance. It is an ennobling, enriching experience to just look down from the summit of a mountain. You bow down and make your obeisance to whichever God you worship. I left on Everest a picture of Guru Nanak, Rawat left a picture of Goddess Durga.

Phu Dorji left a relic of the Buddha. Edmund Hillary had buried a cross under a cairn (a heap of rocks and stones) in the snow. These are not symbols of conquest but of reverence.

मेरे पास इस प्रश्न का एक और अधिक निजी उत्तर है। मेरे बचपन से ही मुझे पर्वतों द्वारा आकर्षित किया गया है। मैं मैदानों में, जब पर्वतों से दूर हुआ, तो बहुत उदास व गुमशुदा सा रहा था। पर्वत प्रकृति का श्रेष्ठतम रूप हैं। उनकी सुन्दरता व प्रभावशीलता एक बड़ी चुनौती पेश करती है, और बहुत से (लोगों) की भाँति मैं विश्वास करता हूँ कि पर्वत ईश्वर से विचारों के आदान-प्रदान करने का एक साधन है।

एक बार यह मान लेने पर, प्रश्न यह बना रहता है : एवरेस्ट ही क्यों? क्योंकि यह उच्चतम है, सबसे शक्तिशाली (अर्थात् कठिन) है, और इसने पूर्व के काफी प्रयासों को असंभव किया है। यह व्यक्ति की ऊर्जा का अंतिम आउन्स (छोटा अंश) तक ले लेता है। यह चट्टान व बर्फ के साथ एक प्रतिरोधी संघर्ष है। एक बार अपनाने पर (अर्थात् चढ़ाई आरम्भ करने पर), इसे आधे रास्ते में नहीं छोड़ा जा सकता है चाहे जब उसका जीवन ही दांव पर हो।

वापसी का रास्ता उतना ही कठिन है जितना कि आगे की ओर का। और तब जब शिखर पर चढ़ा जाता है, तो वहाँ आह्लाद होता है, कुछ कर चुके होने का हर्ष, युद्ध लड़ने व जीतने का भाव। वहां एक विजय का व प्रसन्नता का भाव है। 

एक चोटी को दूरी से देखने पर मैं दूसरे लोक में पहुंच जाता हूँ। मैं स्वयं के भीतर जो परिवर्तन महसूस करता हूँ उसे केवल आध्यात्मिक कहा जा सकता है। अपनी सुन्दरता, एकांतता, शक्ति, ऊबड़-खाबड़ स्थिति और कठिनाइयां जिनका मार्ग में सामना किया जाता है, के द्वारा पर्वत चोटी मुझे अपनी ओर खींचती है जैसा कि एवरेस्ट ने किया यह एक चुनौती है जिससे अपने को रोकना कठिन है।

पीछे मुड़कर देखने पर मैं पाता हूँ कि मैंने अभी तक पूर्णतः स्पष्ट नहीं किया है कि मैं एवरेस्ट पर क्यों चढा। यह एक ऐसे प्रश्न का उत्तर देना है जैसे आप क्यों श्वास लेते हैं? आप अपने पड़ौसी की सहायता क्यो करते हैं? आप अच्छे काम क्यों करना चाहते हैं? कोई अंतिम उत्तर संभव नहीं है। और फिर यह तथ्य है कि एवरेस्ट केवल एक शारीरिक चढ़ाई नहीं है (अर्थात् हम शरीर से ही ऊँचाई पर नहीं पहुंचते हैं बल्कि हमारी सोच, हमारी क्रियाएं आदि भी ऊँची हो जाती हैं)।

व्यक्ति जो पर्वत शिखर पर हो आया है वह इस विशाल विश्व में अपनी स्वयं की लघुता के प्रति विशेष तरीके से जागरूक हो जाता है। एक पर्वत की भौतिक विजय (अर्थात् शारीरिक रूप से पर्वत पर चढ़ना) उपलब्धि का केवल एक भाग है। उसकी बजाय (अर्थात् शारीरिक विजय की बजाय) इसका और अधिक महत्व है।

इसके (शारीरिक विजय के) बाद कार्यपूर्णता का भाव आता है। अपने परिवेश से ऊपर उठने की गहन लालसा की संतुष्टि होती है। यह व्यक्ति में साहसिक कार्यों के प्रति शाश्वत प्रेम है। अनुभूति केवल शारीरिक नहीं होती है। यह संवेगात्मक होती है। यह आध्यात्मिक होती है। 

शिखर की ओर अंतिम ऊँचाइयों पर एक कठिन चढाई का विचार करें। आप दूसरे आरोहक के साथ एक रस्से में साझेदारी कर रहे हैं। आप दृढ़ बने रहते हैं। वह (साथी आरोहक) कठोर बर्फ को काटकर सीढ़ियां बनाता है। फिर | वह (रस्से को) लपेटकर बांधता है और आप अपना रास्ता धीरे-धीरे तय करते हैं। चढ़ाई कठिन है।

आप प्रत्येक नस खींचते हैं (अर्थात् पूरी शक्ति लगाते हैं) जैसे ही आप एक-एक कदम उठाते हैं। प्रसिद्ध पर्वतारोहियों ने दूसरों द्वारा (उन्हें) दी गई सहायता का रिकार्ड छोड़ा है। उन्होंने यह भी दर्ज किया है कि उन्हें केवल वह सहायता कैसे आवश्यक थी। अन्यथा वे परित्याग कर चुके होते (अर्थात् चढ़ाई बीच में ही छोड़ चुके होते) ।

शिखर पर चढ़ चुके होने का अनुभव आपको पूर्णरूप से परिवर्तित कर देता है। एक दूसरा शिखर भी है। यह स्वयं आपके अन्दर है। यह आपके स्वयं के मस्तिष्क में है। प्रत्येक व्यक्ति स्वयं के अन्दर अपने स्वयं का पर्वत शिखर लिये चलता है। उसे स्वयं के और अधिक पूर्ण ज्ञान तक पहुंचने के लिए इसे अवश्य चढ़ना चाहिए। यह डरावना है, और न चढ़ पाने वाला है। इस पर किसी अन्य द्वारा नहीं चढ़ा जा सकता है। आपको स्वयं को इसे करना पड़ता है। बाह्य पर्वत शिखर पर चढ़ाई का शारीरिक कार्य आंतरिक पर्वत पर चढ़ाई के कार्य के सदृश (समान) है। दोनों की चढ़ाई के प्रभाव समान हैं ।

चाहे पर्वत जिस पर आप चढ़ते हैं वह शारीरिक है या संवेगात्मक है व आध्यात्मिक है, चढ़ाई आपको निःसन्देह परिवर्तित कर देगी। यह आपको विश्व व आपके स्वयं के बारे में बहुत कुछ शिक्षा देती है।  मैं यह सोचने का जोखिम लेता हूँ (अर्थात् साहस करता हूँ) कि एक एवरेस्ट विजेता के रूप में मेरे अनुभव ने मुझे वह प्रेरणा प्रदान की है कि जीवन की अग्नि- परीक्षाओं का दृढ़ता से सामना करूँ। पर्वत पर चढ़ना एक सार्थक अनुभूति थी। आंतरिक शिखर की विजय उतनी ही सार्थक है। आंतरिक शिखर, शायद, एवरेस्ट से भी ऊँचे हैं।
