The ova begins to mature with the onset of puberty. One ovum matures and is released by one of the ovaries.

Once in about 28 to 30 days. During this period, the wall of the uterus becomes thick so as to receive the egg, in case it is fertilised it begins to develop. It results in pregnancy. The capacity for maturation and production of gametes lasts for a much longer time in males than in females.

Question 12.
What is the role of hormones in completing the life cycle of insects and frogs?
Answer:
We know that in life cycle of insects and frog there are many stages. Similarly, the tadpole passes through certain stages to become a frog. This change from larva to adult is called metamorphosis. Metamorphosis in insects is controlled by insect hormones. In a frog, it is controlled by thyroxine, the hormone produced by thyroid. Thyroxine production requires the presence of iodine in water. If the water in which the tadpoles are growing does not contain sufficient iodine, the tadpoles cannot become adults.

RBSE Class 8 Science Important Questions Chapter 10 Reaching the Age of Adolescence 1
chromosomes in the nuclei of their cells. Two chromosomes (1 pair) out of these are the sex chromosomes, named X and Y. A female has two X chromosomes, while a male has one X and one Y chromosome. The gametes (egg and sperm) have only one set of chromosomes. The unfertilized egg always has one X chromosome. But sperms are of two kinds. One kind has a X chromosome, and the other kind has a Y chromosome. When a sperm containing X chromosome fertilises the egg, the zygote would have two X chromosomes and develop into a female child. If the sperm contributes a Y chromosome to the egg (ovum) at fertilisation, the zygote would develop into a male child.

Question 2.
Draw a diagram showing the position of different endocrine glands in the human. Describe the function of hormones which are secreted by these glands.
Answer:
Endocrine Glands:
1. Pituitary gland:
It is situated at the lower part of our head. Its size is like the grain of pea. Hormone secreted by it controls the function of other endocrine glands.

2. Thyroid glands:
This gland is situated at the base on the both sides of respiratory tube. It secrete the thyroxine hormone, it is formed by iodine. By deficiency of this hormone 'goitre' disease develop, by this throat become bulged.

3. Adrenal gland:
This gland is situated on upper part of kidney. It secretes adrenalin hormone. It maintains the correct salt balance in the blood. It helps the body adjust stress when one is very angry, embarrassed or worried.

4. Pancreas gland:
It is situated below stomach. It secretes insulin hormone. It controls the quantity of glucose in blood. Due to deficiency of this hormone glucose comes out with urine, to which we call diabetes disease.

5. Reproductive glands:
They produce reproductive hormones which are responsible for maturation of sex organs and secondary sexual characters.
They are of two types:
(a) Female reproductive glands
(b) Male reproductive glands.

(a) Female reproductive glands:
Ovary: it produces estrongen and progesteron hormones, which is responsible for female secondary sexual characters.

(b) Male reproductive glands: It secrete testosterone hormone, which is responsible for male secondary sexual characters.

Question 3.
What is the nutritional requirement of adolescents? Explain.
Answer:
Adolescence is a state of rapid growth and development. Hence the diet for an adolescent has to be carefully planned. In this stage we should take balanced diet in which proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins and minerals are present in requisite proportions. Our Indian meal of roti, rice, dal and vegetables is a balanced meal. Milk is a balanced food in itself.

Fruits also provide nourishment. Iron builds blood and iron rich food such as leafy vegetables, jaggery, meat, citrus, Indian gooseberry (amla) are good for adolescents. Our lunch and dinner include cereals which give energy. We can also include milk, meat, nuts and pulses. Besides them it is also essential to include fats and sugar which are the source of energy. Use of fruits and vegetables is essential as protective foods. We should avoid the use of packed or tinned food materials because they do not have adequate nutritional value.
