Roadside Stand Reference To Context Question 1.
The economic well being of a country depends on a balanced development of the villages and the cities.
Answer:
Of course, urban and rural areas are like the two sides of a coin. For real progress of India, rural development is very necessary. It's very unfair that all the development takes place in big cities only. Various employment and other welfare schemes like electricity, clean drinking water, proper road connectivity, medical facilities should be provided in villages too. Therefore, it is absolutely right that the economic well being of a country depends on a balanced development of the villages and the cities.

RBSE Solutions for Class 12 English Flamingo Poem 5 A Roadside Stand

The owners of the stall began their modest enterprise, hoping to sell fresh farm produce to the city-dwellers who passed by on the road. However, these self-absorbed motorists were completely indifferent to the plight and needs of the villagers. Sometimes they stopped, but not for buying.

Question 2.
What is the attitude of the city-dwellers towards their rural brethern? How does the poet criticise it ?
Answer:
The city-dwellers pass by the roadside stall all day on the busy road, but they hardly notice it. They do not seem to care about the trouble these villages most have gone through to extend that shed with their meagre resources.

Neighter do they care for the fresh farm produce on sale at the stall. If someone does stop, it is not to buy anything from the stall. This shows their complete indifference towards the villagers, and their selfish, insensitive attitude towards these hard-working, yet poor people.

Question 3.
The poet expresses his concernt about the future of the deprived rural folk. What is his concern ? Explain.

They never tried to help them by purchasing their products. Rather, they sought to grab the lands of the poor farmers by befooling them with imaginary benefits if they sold out their lands to them. They use persuasion and force to deprive them of their lands.

What ways did the "greedy good doers" employ to harm the simple farmers?
Answer:
There was news that these hard-working, honest but poor and deprived were to be deprived of their lands by the greedy so-called good-doers of the city. They were to be re-settled near big stores and theatres.

They were promised carefree and comfortable lives if they sold out their lands to them. The heartless beasts of prey people were planning to persuade or force the farmers to accept their offers of false benefits to deprive them of their lands.

They were also destroying their age-old lifestyle.

But for some of the money, the cash, whose flow supports
The flower of cities from sinking and withering faint.

Or if ever aside a moment, then out of sorts
At having the landscape marred with the artless paint
Of signs that with N turned wrong and S turned wrong.

Context - The poet here points out the stand owner's concern and explains why he did not get enough business on the readside.

This would be a very small fraction of the cash that makes cities (urban centres) survive and grow, and saves them from collapsing like a withering flower. But alas! The rich and ambitious motorists passed from there lost in their thoughts of their next venture.

And even if someone stopped there, he looked at the garish, incongruous hordings that marred the lovely countryside landscape. Some stopped to check directions, because the singns had turned upside down.

You have the money, but if you want to be mean,
Why keep your money (this crossly) and go along.

Word-Meanings : wild (वाइल्ड) = of the forest, जंगली। berries (बैरीज) = (here) a small round fruit growing on wild bush, बेर। wooden (वुडन) = made of wood, लकड़ी से बने। mean (मीन) = (here) miser, कंजूस।

Reference - These lines are taken from the poem ‘A Roadside Stand' composed by Robert Frost.

Context - The poet here describes the wares that were on sale at that roadside stand.

Explanation - The roadside stand (stall) sold wild berries (a fruit from shrubs) kept in wooden crates, squash (a kind of twisted gourd) that had twisted necks and golden coloured with silvery spots. And all this was sold in beautiful surroundings of lush mountains. The stall owner knew that the motorists had plenty of money, but they were miserly in buying fresh farmproduce (while they would spend mindlessly on trivial, unnecessary things). He then got a little annoyed and told the motorists to keep their money and move forward.

Stanza 4.

The hurt to the scenery wouldn't be my complaint
So much as the trusting sorrow of what is unsaid :
Here far from the city we make our roadside stand
And ask for some city money to feel in hand
To try if it will not make our being expand.

Word-Meanings : hurt (ह:ट) = harm, नुकसान । unsaid (अन्सैड)= not said, नहीं कहे गये, अनकहे । scenery (सीनरी)= (here) landscape, भूदृश्य | expand (एक्स्पैं ड)= (here) develop, विस्तार करना, विकास करना ।

Reference - These lines are taken from the poem ‘A Roadside Stand' Composed by Robert Frost.

Context - The poet now dwells upon the real complaint of the owner of the roadside stand, and also explains why he wants the money from the city-dwellers.

Explanation - The poet says that he has no problem with the garish, artless paint on the road which spoils the beauty of the surroundings. Rather, he is concerned with the trust that the villagers have in government officials.

But this trust is never respected, which results in sorrow to the silent poor people. The stall owner says that it is not greed which makes him want to earn money. He has made this stall far from the city by the roadside to earn some money from the city-dwellers, so that he may have a taste of money and see if it (the money) makes him as vain and thoughtless, as the city people are.

Stanza 5.

And give us the life of the moving-pictures' promise
That the party in power is said to be keeping from us.
It is in the news that all these pitiful kin
Are to be brought out and mercifully gathered in
To live in villages, next to the theatre and the store,
Where they won't have to think for themselves anymore

Reference - These lines are extracted from the poem ‘A Roadside Stand composed by Robert Frost.

Context - The poet further elaborates what the city money is expected to do for the rural folk. He also describes what the politicians are planning to do for these simple, hard-working people in the name of development.

Explanation - The stall-owner further says that he wonders if this money would give them the kind of life shown in movies, the comfortable life that the politicians are deliberately denying them. He has heard the news that all the poor, helpless villagers are to be resettled closer to the cities, near theatres and markets. This was supposed to be a mercy on them, for then, they would not have to be worried about their sustenance any longer.

Stanza 6.

While greedy good-doers, beneficent beasts of prey,
Swarm over their lives enforcing benefits
That are calculated to soothe them out of their wits,
And by teaching them how to sleep they sleep all day,
Destroy their sleeping at night the ancient way.

Word-Meanings : greedy good-doers (ग्रीडि गुड-डुअज़) = greedy persons who pretend to do good, लालची व्यक्ति जो अच्छाई करने का बहाना करते हैं। beasts of prey (बीस्ट्स ऑव प्रे) = violent meat eating animals like lions etc, हिंसक जानवर या पशु।

soothe (सूद्) = to make silent, शान्त करना। out of their wits

Reference – These lines are extracted from the poem 'A Roadside Stand' composed by Robert Frost.

Context - The poet here warns these simple villagers about the kind of changes their lives would undergo if and when they are re-located to the city outskirts.

Explanation - The poet says that when the rural folk are relocated to the city outskirts their lives would be controlled by those greedy, so-called well-wishers, who will exploit them like flesh-eating wild animals. These predators will burden them forcibly with such benefits that will put them into a slumber of sloth and dull their minds.

Then these hard-working, honest people will become indolent, do no work and sleep all day, and toss about sleepless at night. This is the change that these people would experience, which will destroy their age-old way of life.

Stanza 7.

Sometimes I feel myself I can hardly bear
The thought of so much childish longing in vain,
The sadness that lurks near the open window there,
That waits all day in almost open prayer.

childish (चाइल्डिश) = (here) immature, अपरिपक्व। in vain (इन वेन) = without any use, व्यर्थ।

Reference – These lines are extracted from the poem ‘A Roadside Stand composed by Robert Frost.

Context - The poet here brings out the deep disappointment of an unfulfilled desire that afflicts the lonely roadside stand and its owner.

Explanation - The poet says here that he feels he can no longer bear the innocent hope of these simple villagers that is never fulfilled. He is pained at the silent sadness that lies heavy at the window of the roadside shop that remains open all day, awaiting business and succour in a prayer that can be heard by any sensitive man who happens to pass by on that road.

Stanza 8.

For the squeal of brakes, the sound of a stopping car,
Of all the thousand selfish cars that pass,
Just one to inquire what a farmer's prices are,
And one did stop, but only to plow up grass
In using the yard to back and turn around;
And another to ask the way to where it was bound;

just (जस्ट) = only, मात्र । inquire (इन्क्वायर) = to get information, पता लगाना, पूछताछ करना। plow up (प्लो अप) = turn over, उलटना। yard (या:ड) = open space, आंगन। bound (बाउन्ड) = leading to, जाना।

Reference - These lines are extracted from the poem 'A Roadside Stand composed by Robert Frost.

Context - The poet tells us in these lines how the standowner's patience is further tested by motorists who do stop there, but not to buy anything.

Explanation - The stand owner waits for an indication of a stopping car the sound of braking wheels, the idling of an engine. But of all the thousands of unfeeling, self-centred car that pass that way, just one stops to ask the prices of the farmer's produce. Another stops, but only to circle through the yard to turn around, uprooting the grass with its heartless tyres. Yet another car stops, but only to ask where that road led to.

Stanza 9.

And another to ask could they sell it a gallon of gas
They couldn't (this crossly); they had none, didn't it see?
No, in country money, the country scale of gain,
The requisite lift of spirit has never been found,
Or so the voice of the country seems to complain.

Word-Meanings : this crossly = they refuse in angry mood, lift of spirit = encouragement, प्रोत्साहन।

Reference - These lines are extracted from the poem 'A Roadside Stand composed by Robert Frost.

Context -The poet continues to talk about another motorist who does stop, but again, not to buy the wares of the stand. And then the poet goes on to explain why the rural folk continue to live in perpetual want.

Explanation - Another motorist stops by, but only to ask if the shop sold petrol, for he wanted to buy a gallon. This made the standowner angry who told the motorist that he had none to sell, and he could see it was a farm-produce stall. The poet observes that the cash flow in rural areas, the profits earned here could never lift the despondency from these people's lives. This was what the voice of this deprived land seemed to complain about.

I can't help owning the great relief it would be
To put these people at one stroke out of their pain.
And then next day as I come back into the sane,
I wonder how I should like you to come to me
And offer to put me gently out of my pain.

at one stroke = with one blow, sane = balanced, संतुलित।

Reference - These lines are extracted from the poem ‘A Roadside Stand composed by Robert Frost.

Context - The poet is extremely anguished at the villagers' sufferings and hopes for their immediate and complete solution.

Explanation - The poet says he would be greatly relieved if these rural folk are put out of their pain in one swift effort. The next day, he realises the folly of his expectation, because he realises this was never going to happen because of the indifference of the government. Now he wishes someone would come to him and put him mercifully out of his own anguish at these people's plight.
