RBSE Solutions for Class 12 English Flamingo Poem 1 My Mother at Sixty-Six

Question 2.
How does Kamla Das make use of imagery in her poem 'My Mother at Sixty-six' ? Describe briefly.
Answer:
In the beginning, the poet's mother sits beside her in the car, the poet describes her face to be as ashen as a corpse. Again, to distract herself, she looks out of the window of the car and describes the images of young trees rushing past and children happily running out of their homes in stark contrast to her motionless mother.

While taking leave of her at the airport, she compares her mother's pale, and wrinkled face with the late winter moon. The poem thus uses vivid imagery to convey the poet's emotions.

Question 3.
Give a brief characterisation of the poet as a thoughtful and caring daughter.

She wants her mother to be always by her side, but she realises that she would not live long. To put up a brave appearance, the poet smiles at her mother as she leaves her at the airport and promises to meet her again.

Question 4.
The main theme of the poem is a reflection of poet's observations of the realities of life.
Justify this statement in light of the poem 'My Mother at Sixty-six'.
Answer:
Our life is full of joys and sorrows, as is this world. The poet worries about her mother's physical state in her advanced age. The mother is weak, pale and zestless. The thought of her death frightens the poet, for she cannot stand being separated from her.

When she is pained at such thoughts, she observes that the world around is going on as usual. Young trees grow stronger and merry children run about with joy and excitement. They are without worries or pain and enjoy the blessings of life.
