Question 4.
The poet says 'No' in the beginning of the third stanza. What does he mean by this?
Answer:
“No’ is connected with the activity mentioned in the second stanza. The poet means to say that hacking and chopping the tree will not kill it. You will have to do something more than that.

Question 5.
What is the meaning of 'anchoring earth' and 'earth cave? '
Answer:
Anchoring earth : The tree stands securely with the help of its roots inside the earth. Thus the earth supports (anchors) it to keep standing.
Earth cave : The root hides inside the earth like a wild animal. So the earth serves the root like a hiding cave.

Question 6.
What does he mean by "the strength of the tree exposed”?
उसका “the strength of the tree exposed” से क्या अभिप्राय है?
Answer:
When the root has been pulled out, strength of the tree is gone. The tree is deprived of its strength and it lies unprotected and without security and support.

Explanations with Reference to the Context

Stanza 1.

It takes much time to kill a tree,
Not a simple jab of the knife Will do it.
It has grown Slowly consuming the earth,
Rising out of it, feeding Upon its crust, absorbing
Years of sunlight, air, water,
And out of its leprous hide
Sprouting leaves.

Reference : These lines have been taken from the poem 'On Killing A Tree' composed by Gieve Patel.Context : The poet tells about killing a tree. He says that it is not easy to kill or root out a tree.

Explanation : The poet expresses his views about killing a tree. He says that a tree cannot be killed or cut in a single stab of a knife or an axe. It is not easy to kill it. It takes a long time to be grown up. It consumes water, mineral and soil from the earth. It absorbs sunlight, air and water to feed itself. Its leaves sprouts from underground part of the earth. The poet tells that a seed decays and then it comes out as a tree from the earth.

सन्दर्भ : ये पंक्तियाँ Gieve Patel द्वारा रचित 'On Killing A Tree' नामक कविता से ली गई हैं।

Stanza 2.

So hack and chop
But this alone wont do it.
Not so much pain will do it.
The bleeding bark will heal
And from close to the ground
Will rise curled green twigs,
Miniature boughs,
Which if unchecked will expand again
To former size.

Reference : These lines have been taken from the peom 'On Killing A Tree' composed by Gieve Patel.

Context : The poet tells that it is not easy to kill a tree in one stab of an axe. It takes a long time to be a grown up tree.

Explanation : The poet tells that it does not a matter whether you cut it at once or cut it into small pieces. But it will not be fruitful. Only its bark (thick upper layer) will becut and it will become healthy again by the course of time. The poet says that its curved twigs will arise near the ground and if the twigs are not controlled it will spread again as a tree. The poet says that a tree cannot be killed untill its roots are green.

Stanza 3.

No,
The root is to be pulled out--
Out of the anchoring earth;
It is to be roped, tied,
And pulled out-snapped out
Or pulled out entirely,
Out from the earth-cave.
And the strength of the tree exposed
The source, white and wet,
The most sensitive, hidden
For years inside the earth.

Reference : These lines have been taken from the poem On Killing A Tree' composed by Gieve Patel.

Context : The poet says that it is not easy to kill a tree in a go of an axe or stabbing a knife. It will sprout again as its roots are green.

Explanation : The pot says that it should not be done like this. To kill a tree it should be pulled out forcely from the earth with the help of a rope. When tree is pulled out and derooted from the earth we see its source of power that is roots. They are white, wet and sensitive. They reared the tree and were hidden deep under the earth. The poet says that work should be done completely not in parts to achieve a perfection in work.

Gieve Patel

Stanza 4.

Then the matter
Of scorching and choking
In sun and air,
Browning, hardening,
Twisting, withering,
And then it is done.

Reference : These lines have been taken from the poem ‘On Killing A Tree' composed by Gieve Patel

Context : The poet says that a tree should be completely derooted to kill it. The roots are the real force of a tree.

Explanation : The poet says that when the tree is derooted or pulled out from the earth, the other work of choking, browning, hardening, twisting and withering is done. At last the work related to its use is performed and the tree completely dies.

Trees

I think that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree.

A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
Against the earth's sweet flowing breast;

A tree that looks at God all day
And lifts her leafy arms to pray;

A tree that may in summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair;

Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
Who intimately lives with rain.

Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a tree. -- Joyce Kilmer

1. It takes.............................leaves.

RBSE Solutions for Class 9 English Beehive Poem 8 On Killing a Tree

2. So hack ................ size

3. No, ................the earth.

4. Then the ................ done.
