Thinking About the Poem : 

Question 1. 
'A slumber did my spirit seal', says the poet. That is, a deep sleep “closed off” his soul (or mind). How does the poet react to his loved one's death? Does he' feel bitter grief? Or does he feel a great peace?
'नींद जिसने मेरे मनोभाव बंद कर दिये', कवि कहता है। अर्थात्, गहरी नींद ने उसके मन को बन्द कर दिया है। कवि अपनी प्रियजन की मृत्यु पर क्या प्रतिक्रिया करता है? क्या उसे शोक हो रहा है? या उसे बड़ी शान्ति प्राप्त हो रही है?
Answer:
The poet reacts by saying that he has no human fears because a slumber has sealed his spirit. She seems a thing that cannot feel the touch of earthly years. Before slumber he may have been in grief but after slumber he doesn't appear so. He appears to feel a great peace; first, he falls asleep and second, he mentions earth's diurnal course (means routine life).

कवि यह कहते हुए प्रतिक्रिया देता है कि उसे अब कोई मानवीय भय नहीं है क्योंकि नींद ने उसके मनोभाव को बन्द कर दिया है। वह अब ऐसी वस्तु बन गई लगती है जिस पर पृथ्वीय वर्षों का प्रभाव नहीं पड़ता है। नींद से पूर्व वह दुःखी हो सकता है किन्तु नींद के बाद वह दुःख में दिखाई नहीं देता है। वह अत्यधिक शान्ति में दिखाई पड़ता है; प्रथम, उसे नींद आ जाती है और द्वितीय, वह पृथ्वी की दैनिक गति का जिक्र करता है (अर्थात् नित्य जीवन की चर्चा करता है।)

The passing of time will no longer affect her, says the poet. Which lines of the poem say this?

Answer:
The message/theme/central idea is that we can draw comforts from nature even when we have lost our loved one. After death, our loved ones become the part of nature which remains in action round the clock.

Answer:
The poet says that his loved one is now beyond earthly years. Only nature is eternal. Then, he says that she rolls round with earth's diurnal course which is too a part of nature. He mentions rocks, stones and trees.

Context : This poem is about the death of poet's beloved. What does he think about her. In his imagination he thinks how his beloved is after death.

Explanation : The poet is in deep grief due to the death of his beloved. He tells that a slumber (death) has sealed all his spirits. How he is completely fearless. She (his beloved) has become a thing that there is not any effect of earthly movements. She is completely out of fears. The poet says that there is no effect of earthly matters after death.

Context : The poem is about the death of poet's beloved. The poet says that no effect of fear remains after death. His beloved is now out of fear.

Explanation : The poet tells that now neither motion-nor force is in her beloved. She neither hears nor sees. Now she has become a part of this earth and she moves with it. There is an intense effect of his beloved's death on the poet. He says that she has become a part of the earth. There is a beautiful controversy here. Poet's beloved is physically motionless but spiritually in movement. He wants to establish that body is mortal but soul is in motion.

Theresa Kane says that she likes this poem... because it is so exhilarating. It sweeps me along in the splendid, stormy words, then there is the quiet, peaceful lagoon of the last two lines of each verse. It is a wonderful poem, as hard, proud and fierce as a rock in a storm. हिन्दी अनुवाद -- कवि मनुष्य को आह्वान करता है कि धूप की गर्मी से तेज शीत ऋतु के गुस्से से मत डरो। आप अपना सांसारिक कार्य कर चुके हो। संसार में घर भी छिन जाता है और आपका वेतन (धन-दौलत) भी लिया जाता है-अच्छे लड़के तथा सभी लड़कियाँ धुएं की चिमनी की सफाई करने वाली की भाँति चले जाते हैं और धूल में समा जाते हैं।

आप तो आतंकी के सहलाने को भी पार कर चुके हों। अतः कपड़ों और भोजन की परवाह मत करो। आपके लिये तो नरकट ही बलूत के पेड़ की तरह है; सभी राजाधिकार, ज्ञान, बुद्धिमता, विज्ञान सभी को इसका अनुसरण करना है और धूल में मिल जाना है।

• कविता के विषय में यह कविता एक प्रियतमा की मृत्यु के विषय में है। जब कवि उसकी मृत्यु के विषय में सोचता है तो वह कैसा महसूस करता है? मृत्योपरान्त, उसकी कल्पनानुसार वह (प्रियतमा) कैसी है?

कठिन शब्दार्थ एवं हिन्दी अनुवाद 

Stanza 1. 

A slumber.....earthly years. 

कठिन शब्दार्थ : slumber (स्लम्ब(र)) = नींद, spirit (स्पिरिट) = मनोभाव/आत्मा, seal (सील्) = बन्द कर देना, earthly years (अश्लि यिअ(र)ज) = पृथ्वीय वर्ष (पृथ्वी पर की जाने वाली काल-गणना)।

हिन्दी अनुवाद : कवि कहता है कि एक नींद ने उसके मनोभाव को बन्द कर दिया अब मुझे कोई मानवीय भय नहीं रहा था। मुझे अब वह ऐसी वस्तु बन गई लगी जो पृथ्वीय वर्षों के प्रभाव को महसूस नहीं कर सकती (अर्थात् जिस पर सांसारिक समय का प्रभाव नहीं पड़ता।)

भावार्थ : प्रियतमा की मृत्यु से कवि सदमे में है। सदमा इतना गहरा है कि उसे नींद आ गई (अचेतनसा हो गया)। मृत्योपरान्त यादें स्थायी बन जाती हैं और यादों पर पृथ्वीय समय का प्रभाव नहीं पड़ता है। कल्पना में (नींद में स्वप्न में) व्यक्ति हमेशा वैसा ही दिखता है जैसा था। 

Stanza 2. 

No motion............................. trees.

कठिन शब्दार्थ : motion (मोशन) = गति, force (फॉस्) = शक्ति, rolled-round (रोल्ड राउन्ड्) = चक्कर काटना, diurnal course (डाइअन्ल् कॉस्) = दैनिक गति, rocks (रॉक्स) = चट्टानें।

हिन्दी अनुवाद : अब उसमें (कवि की मृत प्रियतमा में) न गति है, न शक्ति है - वह न तो सुनती है व न ही देखती है। चट्टानों, पत्थरों व वृक्षों के साथ वह भी पृथ्वी की दैनिक गति के साथ चक्कर काटती है।

भावार्थ : कवि पर प्रियतमा की मृत्यु का गहन प्रभाव है। मृत्योपरान्त मिट्टी में मिलने से वह भी पृथ्वी बन गई है और गति कर रही है। यहाँ कवि सुन्दर विरोधाभास उत्पन्न करता है उसमें गति नहीं है, और वह गति कर रही है। शारीरिक दृष्टि से गति नहीं है लेकिन आध्यात्मिक या आत्मा की दृष्टि से देखें तो गति है। शरीर मरता है, आत्मा गतिशील रहती है।
