In what ways do you think the policies of Rajendra I and Mahmud of Ghazni were a product of their times ? How were the actions of the two rulers different ?
Answer: 
Temples were the centres of honour for king of any state. By destroying the temple, the king and his statements were humiliated. Temples were also looted. The only difference in the actions of Rajendra I and Mahumad Ghazni was that Mahmud destroyed Hindu temple again and again in order to become a hero of Islam. Where as Rajendra destroyed temples and re¬established them in his state. Thus, he didn’t have communal intentions behind his actions. Also, Mahmud of Ghazni looted the wealth of temples and used it in constructing a capital city for himself.

How is the “trabeate” principle of architecture different from “arcuate”?
Answer: 
Trabeate style of Architecture : Between the 7th to 10th centuries, the roofs, doors and In ‘trabeate’ style of architecture, roofs, doors and windows were made by placing a horizontal beam across two vertical columns. This style was used in the construction of temples, mosques and tombs. In ‘arcuate’ style of architecture, the weight of the superstructure above the doors and windows was carried by arches. With the help of this style, high domes over the mosques and tombs could be built easily.

What is a shikhara?
Answer: 
Shikhara” is a Sanskrit word which means ‘mountain peak’. It is the rising tower and the most pointed portion of a temple.

What is pietra-dura?
Answer: 
Pietra-dura is a technique by which beautiful and ornate patterns are created by placing coloured and hard stones in the depressions carved into marble or sandstone. Itmaduddaula Tomb is one of the best tomb built in white marble with ornate pattern of pietra-dura.

What are the elements of a Mughal Chahar Bagh gardens?
Answer: 
Babur was interested in planning and laying out formed gardens. ‘Chahar Bagh’ gardens were planned. Gardens were placed within rectangular walled enclosures. They were divided into four quarters by artificial channels. These gardens were known as Chahar Bagh due to their symmetrical division into quarters.

How did a temple communicate the importance of a king?
Answer: 
Temples communicated the importance of a king by the following ways:

  1. Temples showed a king’s devotion to God, and also showcased his power and wealth.
  2. Sometimes kings took the God’s name because they wanted to show that they are working as representatives of God.
  3. Rulers showed their close relationship with God especially in an age of rapid political change
  4. Construction of temples also depicted ruler’s moral right to be rulers.

An inscription in Shah Jahan’s Diwan-i-khas in Delhi stated : “If there is Paradise on Earth, it is here, it is here, it is here.” How was this image created?
Answer: 
The architectural design of Shah Jahan’s diwan-i-khas has an image of paradise on earth. The pedestal on which his throne was placed was considered as Qibla. This shows that king was the representative of God on the earth. The audience hall describes that by all these architectural features, this image is created. Aimed to communicate that the king’s justice would treat the high and the low as equals creating a world where all could live together in harmony.

Question 7. 
How did the Mughal court suggest that everyone-the rich and the poor, the powerful and the weak- received justice equally from the emperor?
Answer: 
The construction of the royal court in the Red Fort communicates that there is a connection between the imperial court and royal justice. Behind the throne of emperor there was a series of inlays showing the Greek God Orpheus playing the flute. It was believed that Orpheus’s music could calm ferocious beats. Audience halls construction says that all would be treated equally. Diwan-i-amwas a place where anyone could come and put grievances before the emperor without any discrimination.

What role did the Yamuna play in the layout of the new Mughal city at Shahjahanabad?
Answer: 
In the Mughal city of Shahjahanabad, the king’s palace commanded the river front view. He gave access of the river of only some nobles like Dara Shukoh. All other nobles had to construct their houses away from the Yamuna river.
