Question Are the above stories (Refer to Page No. 74 of textbook) in the two newspapers similar? And if not, why
not? What, in your view are the similarities and differences?
Answer:  
The two stories and the two newspapers are different as the story in the newspaper ‘News of India Report’ focuses on the crackdown on polluting factories resulting which the protesters block the roads and disrupted the traffic. On the other hand the news story in the newspaper India Daily Report’ focuses on the closure of factories that has led to unrest because it would result in the loss of the livelihoods of many people.
Differences:

1. The news story in the News of India Report focuses on increasing pollution caused by the factories. It favours government’s decision to close dowii these polluting factories to make the city green and clean. Government offered relocation of factories.

2. While the other story of India Daily Report focuses on the protest made by the workers and the factory owners because of the closure of factories. The workers protested against Municipal Corporation because they considered it as the corporation’s fault as it issues licenses for new factories to be set up in the residential areas.

Similarities

  1. Both the reports are related with the factory issue.
  2. In both the cases, the groups protested.
  3. The demand for relocation has been put

In order to make a balanced report it is necessary to discuss all the points of view of a particular story and to know both sides of the story.

Answer:  
As a journalist my balance story would be:
Setting up factories in the residential colonies can cause the problem of pollution. In order to control the pollution and to make the cities clean, the government is pressurised to close down some factories from the residential areas. This hasty decision of government has resulted in the problem of loss of livelihood for the factory owners and the workers. Although, it is necessary to take such a step in order to make the cities clean and free from pollution but at the same time, it is the responsibility of the government to take steps for the relocation of these industries to suitable location with proper facilities.

What is the consequence of the media ‘setting the agenda’ by reporting on the Fashion Week rather than the slum demolitions?
Answer:  
As the media sets the agenda of reporting on the Fashion Week, the newspapers undermined or neglected the news of demolition of slums in Mumbai area. The news of their problems and their sufferings were not even noticed by any of the newspapers.

Title: The Big Business and Media Bond Media and big business houses share a strong relationship with each other. Media houses are generally owned by big business houses. Media requires lots of money for their various activities like latest lights, videos, sound system, paying wages to their employees. Big business houses provide funds to the media. These big business houses pay heavy amount of money to the media for advertisements regarding their various businesses. In return, the media supports the big business houses by publishing news and articles in their favour and promoting their products through advertisements. And when people buy these products, the money flows back to the business houses.

You have read about the ways in which the media ‘sets the agenda’. What kind of effect does this have in a democracy? Provide two examples to support your point of view.
Answer:  
Media influences our thoughts, feelings and actions by focusing on particular issues. It tries to bring issues to our attention and shapes our opinions. It plays a significant role in our lives by influencing our thoughts and this is commonly known as media *sets the agenda’. By setting agenda on a particular issue, it tries to bring awareness in the society about the illegal activities happening and pressurise the government to take action against it. The two examples related to this are as follows:

  1. The media drew attention to the alarming levels of pesticides in Cola drinks and published reports that indicated the presence of high level of pesticides and warned public about the harmful effects.
  2. Media brought public attention towards the cases of honour killing where the married couples were killed because they belonged to different castes or religion and still they preferred to marry each other.
