Answer: 
Yes, I think the third level was a medium of escape for Charley. He was living with the fear, worries, stress and insecurity of modern life. He wished to live in a peaceful world that existed long before. So, an imagination of the third level cropped up in his mind. He found this to be a place that existed much before the two world wars. He thought of buying tickets from there to a place of the past. He thought of living there away from the hue and cry of the modern world.

What do you infer from Sam's letter to Charley ?

Answer: 
Charley found a letter from Sam, his psychiatrist friend among his collection of first day covers. He had never seen before it but now it suddenly appeared. In the letter, Sam had informed Charley that he was living in Galesburg, on the third level. Clearly, the letter was a product of Charley's imagination. It was his another waking-dream wish fulfilment. Sam's letter also reflects that like Charley, Sam too wanted to escape from this world of sad realities.

We are living in a world that is full of insecurity, fear, wars, worries and stress. These conditions make us uneasy. So, we try to overcome them by escaping from reality. We try to escape to imaginary past because we believe that the past was free from insecurity, fear and worries. We adopt hobbies such as stamp collection, watching comic shows, playing with children etc. Being busy with our hobbies, we get some relief from the harsh realities of the world. 

हम एक ऐसे संसार में रह रहे हैं जो असुरक्षा, डर, युद्ध, चिन्ताओं और तनाव से भरा है । ये स्थितियाँ हमें बेचैन कर देती हैं। इसलिए हम वास्तविकता से बचकर इन पर विजय पाने की कोशिश करते हैं ।

The story "The Third Level' constantly lingers between the past and the present. The past is about a place named Galesburg and the present tells about New York. The narrator lives in New York among the modern insecurity and fear.

He finds the third level at the Grand Central Station, a place of 1894. We constantly keep on moving from New York to Galesburg and from modernity to the old world. Thus, there is obviously an intersection of time and space in the story.

This is a world of total peace where people live a romantic life. They are free from the hustle and bustle of modern life. All this seems to be quite illogical to us. But being troubled with present-day life people will surely find ways to make the world a peaceful place.

Philately is a hobby of collecting stamps. The stamps issued in the past keep that time afresh in our memory. Collection of newspapers and cartoon clippings, coin collection, old monuments, relics, and literature etc. are some other ways in which the past is kept alive.

We believe that people in the past lived a happy and peaceful life because there was no hustle and bustle in life. We often compare our past with the present and try to shape the future accordingly.

Answer: 
Both 'Adventure' and 'The Third Level' present such a subject-matter where a character experiences the past. In 'Adventure', Gangadharpant finds himself reading a history book. He passes two days in the past and then comes back to the present.

In the same way, Charley in 'The Third Level' finds himself in the world of remote past. Later, he also comes back to the present. Both these stories project that imagination makes us forget reality. But ultimately we have to come back to the real world. 

'Adventure' और 'The Third Level' ये दोनों कहानियाँ एक ऐसी विषय-वस्तु प्रस्तुत करती हैं जिसमें एक पात्र अतीत के अनुभव से होकर गुजरता है । 'Adventure' में गंगाधरपन्त स्वयं को एक इतिहास की पुस्तक पढ़ते हुए पाता है । वह अतीत में दो दिन बिताता है और फिर वापस वर्तमान में आ जाता है ।

Summary of the Story:

This is a story of modern man's fear and insecurity. The world has become such a tension place that people tend to escape from it. They want to live in the world that existed much before two world wars.The narrator of the story, Charley once finds himself in the world that existed in 1894. He comes out with the intention of getting old style currency. 

But he never finds the place again. Then his psychiatrist friend, Sam suddenly disappears. Charley gets a letter from him. The letter informs that Sam is in the world that existed in 1894. The temptation to escape was so strong that even a psychiatrist fell victim to it. He found himself in the imaginary world of peace.
