The different means of transport are:

(i) Roadways: 
They are the most commonly used means of transport for short distance, like they connect rural and urban places, parts of the city’s centers of production to the centres of consumption. Usually, plains have a dense network of roadways whereas mountainous regions have quite less network.

(ii) Railways: 
They are the fastest and cheapest means of transportation especially to carry heavy loads to far off places. Electric engines are the latest and are used every where as they produce less pollution. India has the largest network of trains.

(iii) Airways: 
They are the fastest and the most expensive means of*transportation as they use white petrol. They can reach the most remote and distant areas, even where there are no roads or railways, for e.g. mountainous regions, desert areas;-flooded areas etc.

(iv) Waterways: 
They are dldest and cheapest means of transportation to carry heavy goods from one country or-continent to another. They are of too types inland waterways and sea routes.

Settlements are of the following types:

  1. Rural settlements,
  2. Urban settlements 
  • The villages are Rural Settlements.
  • In these settlements, people are engaged in agriculture, fishing, forestry, crafts work and trading etc.

Rural settlements are of two types:

  1. Compact, and
  2. Scattered.
  • A Compact settlement is a closely built area of dwellings. They are built on flat land.
  • In a scattered settlement dwellings are spaced over an extensive area. These settlements are mostly found in hilly tracts, thick forests, and regions of extreme climate.

In rural areas, people build houses to suit their environment.

  • In regions of heavy rainfall, they have slanting roofs.
  • In the places where water accumulates in the rainy season, the houses are constructed on a raised platform or stilts.
  • Thick mud walled houses with thatched roofs are very common in areas of hot climate.
  • Local materials like stones, mud, clay, straw, etc. are used to construct,  houses.
  • The towns are small urban settlements and the cities are larger urban settlements. 
  • Fish and rice are the staple food among the inhabitants of the delta region.
  • Many big cities and towns are located in the plains of Ganga Brahmaputra.
  • A well-developed system of transport is present in the basin.
  • Tourism is an important activity of this basin.
