Kanta faced two different experiences. On one hand, she along with her child and many other people were standing in a queue to cast their vote on the election day. There was no special treatment given to any person, whether the person belonged to any background, rich or poor. This made Kanta feel equal to others. Whereas, on the other hand,, when her daughter fell sick she could not take leave. She had to finish her daily works. She had to stand in queue in government hospital to wait for her turn. She found that only poor people like her had to wait in line. Her employer could afford to visit a private doctor.

He was made to sweep the school and the playground for the next couple of days. This only came to an end when his father saw his son sweeping. His father confronted the teachers and took Omprakash away from school.

Where as Ansari’s dignity was also hurt when many landlords refused to lease their apartment to them. However, when the property dealer suggested that they should change their name. It was their dignity or self respect that made them refuse this suggestion.

Every individual in the country, including male and female persons from all castes* religions, tribes, educational and economic bankgrounds are recognised as equal. In democratic India, the principal of the equality of all persons is recognised. There are several laws that work to see that people are treated with dignity and as equals. It guarantees fundamental rights to all its citizens, hence equality is guaranteed to all. Every person is equal before law.

One such government scheme is midday meal scheme. This refers to the programme introduced in all government elementary schools. It provides children with cooked lunch. Tamil Nadu was the first state in India to introduce this scheme. In 2001, the Supreme Court asked all the state government to begin this programme in their schools within six months. This programme has many positive effects. Many poor children have begin enrolling and regularly attending school. This programme has also helped reduce caste prejudice because both lower and upper caste children in the school eat this meal together. In a few places, Dalit women have been employed to cook the meal. The midday meal programme also helps reduce the hunger of poor students who often come to school and cannot concentrate because their stomachs are empty.

Although government programmes play an important role in increasing equality of opportunity, there is much that still needs to be done.
