The story of 'A Tiger for Malgudi' is 'fall of the great and uplift of the brute'. Which is the character whose fall and uplift has been mentioned here and how?
'अ टाइगर फॉर मालगुड़ी' किसी महान् व्यक्तित्व का पतन और किसी पशु के उत्थान की कहानी है। वह कौनसा पात्र है जिसके पतन और उत्थान का यहाँ जिक्र किया जा रहा है और वह किस प्रकार से है?
Answer:
Fall and uplift these two words are concerned with the same character and it is a tiger. Among the wild beasts in the jungle, the tiger lived comfortably a royal life. All the other animals bowed before his power and left the path free for him. But as this tiger fell in the hands of man, his hellish life started. He was kept hungry and thirsty for many 673 days. He was lashed cruelly and compelled to do many odd deeds. He had become a slave of a circus owner. So this was the fall of the great.

However there came a chance when a hermit adopted him. The wild beast had subdued before the spiritual power of the hermit. He followed him peacefully and passed a good part of his life in the company of this hermit.

Both of them far off in a jungle cave of Mampi Range. The hermit preached many things about human behaviour, life and beyond life, influence of God and many other virtues. He grasped everything. Now he could understand what men are talking. Now he was not any violent beast. He was a tiger in form but a hermitlike creature in nature. So it was an uplift of a brute.

पतन और उत्थान ये दो शब्द एक ही पात्र से सम्बन्धित हैं और वह है एक बाघ । जंगल में जंगली जानवरों के बीच में वह बाघ आरामपूर्वक एक शाही जीवन बिताया करता था। सभी दूसरे जानवर उसकी ताकत के सामने झुकते थे और उसके लिये रास्ता खाली छोड़ देते थे। लेकिन जैसे ही वह बाघ आदमी के हाथों में पड़ा वैसे ही उसका नरक के समान जीवन शुरू हो गया।

उसे कई दिनों तक भूखा और प्यासा रखा गया। उसे निर्दयतापूर्वक कोड़ों से मारा गया और बहुत से अजीब-अजीब कार्यों को करने के लिये मजबूर किया गया। वह एक सर्कस मालिक का गुलाम बन गया था। इस प्रकार से यह एक महान् व्यक्तित्व का पतन था। फिर भी एक ऐसा मौका आया जब एक साधु ने उसे अपना लिया। वह जंगली पशु उस साधु की आध्यात्मिक शक्ति के आगे शान्त हो गया था। 

उसने शान्तिपूर्वक उसका अनुगमन किया और अपने जीवन का एक अच्छा सा भाग उसने इस साधु की संगति में बिताया। वे दोनों ही दूर जंगल में मैम्पी पर्वत श्रृंखला की एक गुफा में रहते थे। वह साधु उसे मानवीय व्यवहार के बारे में बहुत सी बातों का उपदेश करता था, जीवन और जीवन से परे की बातें बताता था, भगवान के प्रभाव के बारे में बताता था और बहुत सी दूसरी भी अच्छी बातें बताता था। वह हर बात को पकड़ कर समझता था। अब वह यह भी समझ सकता था कि लोग क्या बातें कर रहे हैं। अब वह कोई हिंसक जानवर नहीं था। वह स्वरूप में एक बाघ था लेकिन स्वभाव में साधु के समान व्यवहार वाला प्राणी था। इस प्रकार से यह एक पशु का उत्थान था।

Write down the great power of the one who thinks himself as the lord of every thing and how did he demise?
उस व्यक्ति की महान् शक्ति के बारे में लिखो जो अपने आपको सबका मालिक समझता था और उसकी समाप्ति किस प्रकार से हुई?
Answer:
Captain who used to run a circus was able to capture the tiger. It was he who gave relief to the villagers from the terror of the tiger. He had several animals both big and ferocious. All the animals quickly obeyed the commands of captain. He knew many ways to tame the wild nature of the animals. When the ape was giving his advice to the tiger to run round and round at the command of captain, he also said that captain thinks himself to be the Lord of the universe.

The tiger also appreciated captain's energy and power and his skill in performing the various tasks. He provided food for all. He had a vast army of men working for him. He never consulted anyone but he only issued orders. Rita was his wife. She was also the head of trapeze artists. He ignored even her and she had to follow his command though unwillingly. Even such a powerful man had to lose his life at the paw of the tiger when he was giving him a training to stand on the two hind legs.

कैप्टन जो कि एक सर्कस चलाता था वह बाघ को पकड़ने में समर्थ हुआ था। यह वही था जिसने गाँव वालों को बाघ के भय से मुक्ति दी थी। उसके पास दोनों ही प्रकार के बड़े-बड़े तथा भयंकर कई जानवर थे। सभी जानवर कैप्टन के आदेश पर तुरन्त अमल करते थे। जानवरों के जंगली स्वभाव को पालतू बना लेने के लिये उसे बहुत से उपाय आते थे। जब लंगूर बाघ को अपनी यह सलाह दे रहा था कि वह कैप्टन के आदेश पर गोल-गोल दौड़े तो उसने यह भी कहा था कि कैप्टन अपने आप को इस ब्रह्माण्ड का मालिक समझता है।

वह बाघ भी कैप्टन की ऊर्जा और उसकी शक्ति और भिन्न-भिन्न कार्यों को पूरा करने की उसकी निपुणता की तारीफ करता था। वह सबको भोजन देता था। उसके पास काम करने वाले लोगों की एक बड़ी फौज थी। वह किसी से सलाह मशवरा नहीं करता था। बस वह तो केवल आदेश देता था। रीता उसकी पत्नी थी। वह कलाबाजी करने वाले कलाकारों की मुखिया भी थी। वह उसकी भी अवहेलना कर देता था और उसे भी कैप्टन की बात माननी होती थी चाहे भले ही अनमने मन से। ऐसे शक्तिशाली मनुष्य को बाघ के पंजे से अपना जीवन उस समय गंवाना पड़ा जब वह बाघ को अपने पिछले दो पैरों पर खड़े होने की ट्रेनिंग दे रहा था।

Alphonse terrifies everyone with his wordings while his actual actions are equal to nought. Throw light on it.
एलफोन्से अपने शब्दों से हर किसी को भयभीत कर देता है जबकि उसके वास्तविक कार्य शून्य के बराबर हैं। इस बात के ऊपर प्रकाश डालो।
Answer:
Alphonse was a hunter and he had a keen interest in the tiger hunting. Somehow he came to know about the presence of a tiger in the school. The public in panic had gathered there in a large number. Alphonse comes there on his motor cycle. He has his gun with him. He asked where the tiger was. 

The hermit who was present there indicated that the tiger was there. He shouted at the top of his voice, “Keep away, everybody. I won't be responsible if anyone is hurt." He held up and flourished his gun and said that he would shoot the tiger through the door.

Then he asked for a ladder and said, “I will go up and shoot from the roof.” He removed some of the tiles. In the mean time the people from Save Tiger Committee arrived there. They forbade Alphonse from killing the tiger. Alphonse talked to the chairman of the committee taking him aside. Again he was ready with his gun as if he taken permission. 

Again he warned everybody to move back. He took a flask out of his pocket. He drank some wine and then another drink and another drink. Then he lay unconscious. The hermit led the tiger away from there. Thus he made a lot of noise but actually he did nothing.

एलफोन्से एक शिकारी था और उसे बाघ का शिकार करने में बड़ी रुचि थी। किसी प्रकार से उसे स्कूल में बाघ की उपस्थिति का पता चला। काफी संख्या में भयभीत भीड़ वहाँ जमा हो गई थी। एलफोन्से अपनी मोटर साइकिल पर वहाँ आता है। उसके पास उसकी बन्दूक है। उसने पूछा कि बाघ कहाँ है। वह साधु जो वहाँ उपस्थित था उसने इशारा किया कि बाघ वहाँ है। वह पूरे जोर की आवाज में चिल्लाया, "दूर रहो, हर कोई। मैं जिम्मेदार नहीं रहूँगा यदि किसी को चोट लग जाये।" उसने अपनी बन्दूक को उठाया और लहराया और बोला कि वह बाघ को दरवाजे में से होकर मारेगा। इसके बाद उसने एक सीढ़ी माँगी और बोला, "मैं ऊपर जाऊँगा और उसे छत पर से गोली मारूँगा।" उसने कुछ टाइलें भी हटाईं। 

इसी बीच में बाघ रक्षा समिति के लोग वहाँ आ गये। उन्होंने एलफोन्से को बाघ को मारने से मना किया। एलफोन्से ने समिति के चेयरमैन को अलग ले जाकर बातचीत की। फिर वह अपनी बन्दूक के साथ ऐसे तैयार हो गया जैसे कि मानो उसे अनुमति मिल गई हो। फिर दुबारा उसने हर किसी को पीछे हटने की चेतावनी दी। उसने अपनी जेब से एक फ्लास्क निकाला। उसने कुछ शराब पी, और फिर और पी, इसके बाद उसने और पी। इसके बाद वह बेहोश होकर लेट गया। साधु उस बाघ को अपने साथ ले गया। इस प्रकार से उसने शोर बहुत मचाया परन्तु वास्तव में उसने कुछ नहीं किया।

Captain's wife plays the role of a truly Indian wife. What can you say about it?
कैप्टन की पत्नी सही मायने में एक भारतीय पत्नी की भूमिका निभाती है। तुम इसके बारे में क्या कह सकते हो?
Answer:
Rita was captain's wife. She was the chief of the trapeze artists. Captain seems to be not caring much about his wife. He invents new tricks for the trapeze act. When Rita refuses to do so, he orders for some other lady to put in her place. We find that both captain and his wife never talk peacefully. They always exchange hot words. But in the end Rita becomes ready to do what captain desires. She blames that he gives more importance to his tiger and other animals. At this captain spoke not to spoil his mood. 
 
She enjoyed being argumentative. They were peculiar couple and devoted to each other. Later the hermit told the tiger that those who are deeply attached sometimes deliberately present a rough exterior to each other and that is also one way of enjoying a married state. Some wives show their deepest love only by nagging. At the time of his sudden death he was worried only about his wife. Later she also ended her life by falling from the high swing. Thus she was highly devoted to her husband. She was truly an Indian wife.
 
रीता कैप्टन की पत्नी थी। वह कलाबाजी दिखाने वाले कलाकारों की मुखिया थी । ऐसा प्रतीत होता है कि कैप्टन उसकी ज्यादा परवाह नहीं करता है। वह कलाबाजियों के कार्य के लिये नई-नई युक्तियों का आविष्कार करता है। जब रीता वैसा करने के लिये मना करती है तब वह अपनी पत्नी के स्थान पर किसी दूसरी महिला को लेने का आदेश कर देता है। हम देखते हैं कि कैप्टन और उसकी पत्नी दोनों ही कभी शान्तिपूर्वक बातचीत नहीं करते हैं । वे हमेशा झगड़ालू शब्दों का आदान-प्रदान करते हैं। लेकिन अन्त में जो कुछ कैप्टन चाहता है वैसा करने के लिये रीता तैयार हो जाती है। वह आरोप लगाती है कि अपने बाघ और दूसरे जानवरों को ज्यादा महत्त्व देता है। इस पर कैप्टन ने कहा कि वह उसकी मानसिक स्थिति को खराब न किया करे । 

वह बहस करने में आनन्द लेती थी। वे बहुत ही विशेष प्रकार के दम्पति थे और एक-दूसरे के लिये समर्पित थे। बाद में साधु ने बाघ को बताया था कि जो लोग गहराई से एक-दूसरे से सम्बन्धित रहते हैं वे लोग कभी-कभी स्वच्छन्द रूप से एक-दूसरे के लिये बाहरी रूप से बुरा व्यवहार दिखाते हैं और यह भी विवाहित जीवन का आनन्द लेने का एक तरीका होता है। कुछ पत्नियाँ झगड़ने के द्वारा ही अपने गहन प्रेम को प्रदर्शित करती हैं। अपनी अचानक हुई मृत्यु के समय वह केवल अपनी पत्नी के लिये ही चिन्तित हुआ था। बाद में रीता ने भी ऊँचे झूले से गिरने द्वारा अपने जीवन को समाप्त कर लिया था। इस प्रकार से वह अपने पति के प्रति समर्पित थी। वह सही रूप से एक भारतीय पत्नी थी।

How can you say that the hermit is the hero in. ‘A Tiger for Malgudi'? 
तुम यह कैसे कह सकते हो कि 'अ टाइगर फॉर मालगुड़ी' कहानी में वह साधु ही नायक है?
Answer:
The hero of a story is the one whose presence is felt throughout the whole story. Thus in a first glance we see that it is the tiger who can be the hero because all the incidents of the whole story move round him. But the hero is one who has a sacrificing nature and who plays his role for the well-being of others selflessly. The hero is one who faces the situations boldly and never deviates from the right path. He becomes a model for all and gathers our sympathy. 

Thinking over these facts we find that the hermit emerges as the hero of this long story. In his early life he does his duties as a family man. It is his internal urge for spirituality that he leaves his home and everything and leads a life of penance in the forest. He minimizes all his needs. He protects the tiger from the cruel hands of people. 

He does not care for the insulting words of the people. He calms down the wild nature of the tiger. He awakens his inner soul. He tells the tiger many things of human nature and many things about the divinity. He arranges a comfortable zoo life for the tiger in his old age. He consoles the troubled heart of the tiger by saying that they would again meet in some other life. So the hermit is the hero.

कहानी का नायक वह होता है जिसकी उपस्थिति का अनुभव पूरी कहानी में होता है। इसलिये पहली निगाह में हम देखते हैं कि यह बाघ ही है जो नायक हो सकता है क्योंकि पूरी कहानी की सारी घटनाएँ उसी के चारों ओर घूमती हैं । लेकिन नायक तो वह होता है जिसमें त्यागमय स्वभाव हो और जो निःस्वार्थ भाव से दूसरों की भलाई के लिये अपनी भूमिका निभाता हो। नायक वह होता है जो बहादुरी के साथ परिस्थितियों का सामना करता हो और कभी भी सही मार्ग से डगमगाता न हो। वह सभी के लिये आदर्श बन जाता है 

और हमारी सहानुभूति को प्राप्त करता है। इन तथ्यों पर विचार करते हुए हम पाते हैं कि वह साधु इस लम्बी काहनी के नायक के रूप में उभर कर आता है। अपने प्रारम्भिक जीवन में एक पारिवारिक व्यक्ति के रूप में वह अपने कर्तव्यों को पूरा करता है। आध्यात्मिकता के लिये यह उसकी अन्तःप्रेरणा होती है कि वह अपना घर और सब कुछ छोड़ देता है और जंगल में एक तपस्वी का जीवन व्यतीत करता है। वह अपनी आवश्यकताओं को कम कर लेता है। वह लोगों के द्वारा कहे गये अपमानजनक शब्दों की परवाह नहीं करता है। 

वह बाघ के जंगली स्वभाव को शान्त करता है। वह उसकी अन्तरात्मा को जागृत करता है। वह बाघ को मानव स्वभाव और देवत्व के बारे में बहुत-सी बातें बताता है। वह बाघ की वृद्धावस्था के लिये चिड़ियाघर के जीवन की आरामदायक व्यवस्था बनाता है । वह बाघ के दुःखी मन को यह कहने के द्वारा सान्त्वना देता है कि किसी दूसरे जीवन में वे फिर दुबारा से मिलेंगे। इसलिये वह साधु ही नायक है।

In the story the writer has vividly sketched the demand of the villagers and the negligence of the administration in the contemporary Indian society. Throw light on this.
कहानी में लेखक ने समकालीन भारतीय समाज में गाँव वालों की माँग और प्रशासन की उपेक्षा का स्पष्ट रूप से चित्रण किया है। इस पर प्रकाश डालिये।
Answer:
These were the villagers living amid the forest areas far off the main city. They were very much scared of the presence of a tiger. The tiger was regularly hunting their domestic animals. They were helpless before the tiger attacks. So the selected representatives of the villagers went to the collector's office in the city and demanded to redeem them from the fear of the tiger. 

The collector asked them many questions concerning the tiger and did not believe that there was any tiger. However he asked them to give their complaint in written and he would do something. The villagers visited the office again and again after every six or seven days. They could meet only the clerk and returned hopelessly. They could not find any satisfactory solution from the administration. They were totally negligent about the problem of the villagers.

मुख्य शहर से दूर जंगली क्षेत्रों में रहने वाले ये ग्रामीण लोग थे। वे एक बाघ की उपस्थिति के कारण बहुत ही अधिक भयभीत थे। बाघ नियमित रूप से उनके घरेलू जानवरों का शिकार कर रहा था। वे बाघ के हमलों के आगे असहाय थे। इसलिये गाँव वालों के चुने हुए प्रतिनिधि शहर में कलैक्टर के कार्यालय पर गये और बाघ के भय से मुक्ति की माँग की। कलेक्टर ने बाघ से सम्बन्धित बहुत से प्रश्न किये और उसे यह विश्वास नहीं हुआ कि वहाँ कोई बाघ है।

फिर भी उसने उनसे कहा कि वे लिखित में अपनी शिकायत दे जायें और वह कुछ करेगा। गाँव वाले हर छह या सात दिन बाद बार-बार उस कार्यालय में आते रहे। वे केवल क्लर्क से मिल पाते थे और निराश होकर लौट जाते थे। उन्हें प्रशासन से कोई भी सन्तोषजनक समाधान प्राप्त नहीं हो सका। वे गाँव वालों की समस्या के प्रति पूरे तरीके से उपेक्षा से भरे हुए थे।

Describe the fierce fighting of the tiger and the tigress. 
बाघ और बाघिन के भयंकर युद्ध का वर्णन करो।
Answer:
As the tiger made his first attack on the tigress, she threw him off her back and injured him badly on the eye and the throat. Again she rammed into him and he fell away. Now they butted into each other, scratched, clawed, wrestled, grappled, gashing biting and tearing each other. He also stood up and dashed into her but was it like beating a rock. 

He was so badly injured that he fell down bleeding from everywhere. The tigress was also in the same condition. She fill down in a ditch. She was also bleeding, her eyes were swollen and she was unable to open them while the tiger had better luck. He could open his eyes with blood dripping. Both of them lay panting.

जैसे ही बाघ ने बाघिन पर अपना पहला हमला किया वैसे उसने बाघ को अपनी पीठ पर से दूर फेंक दिया और उसे उसकी आँख तथा गले पर बुरी तरह से घायल कर दिया। फिर उसने बाघ को सिर से टक्कर मारी और वह दूर जाकर गिरा। अब उन दोनों ने एक-दूसरे को टक्कर मारी, खरोंचा, पंजे मारे, भिड़ गये, गुत्थम गुत्था हुई, वे एक-दूसरे को घाव लगा रहे थे, काट रहे थे और फाड़ रहे थे।

वह खड़ा भी हुआ और उसमें टक्कर मारी परन्तु यह एक चट्टान में टक्कर मारने जैसा था। वह इतने बुरे तरीके से घायल हो गया था कि वह गिर पड़ा और उसकी हर जगह से खून बह रहा था। बाघिन की भी वही दशा थी। वह एक गड्ढे में गिर पड़ी थी। उसका भी खून बह रहा था, उसकी आँखें सूजी हुई थीं और वह उन्हें खोलने में असमर्थ हो रही थी जबकि बाघ का भाग्य कुछ अधिक अच्छा था। वह खून से टपकती हुई अपनी आँखों को खोल सकता था। वे दोनों ही पड़े हुये हाँफ रहे थे।

Question 8. 
How was the tiger's family established? 
बाघ का परिवार किस प्रकार से स्थापित हुआ?
Answer:
The time passed and by the time the scars on their bodies were dry, a litter of four was added to this family. They climbed and jumped over them all the time in the cave. These cubs were sucklings. They never moved away. They were happy, continuously suckling, or when fully fed, climbing and jumping over their mother and she lay across the floor of the cave. 

The tiger was free and he arranged food for the family. When they grew up and learnt the use of limbs, they were at an unsafe stage. Any bear or bison could kill them. Now they had to guard them all the time. One would run in the direction of the stream, another in water, and the third on a rock. There was the danger of the eagles and pythons. 

And there was also the danger of slipping down into the ravine. They had to protect them every other minute. They pushed them back into the cave, and one of them would lie across the entrance to stop their going out again. But this was not the permanent solution.

समय बीतता गया और जब तक उनके शरीरों के घाव सूखे तब तक इस परिवार में एक साथ पैदा हुये चार बच्चे और जुड़ गये। वे गुफा के अन्दर पूरे समय उनके ऊपर चढ़ते और कूदते थे। ये दुधमुंहे बच्चे थे। वे कभी कहीं दूर नहीं जाते थे। वे खुश रहते, लगातार दूध पीते रहते थे, या फिर जब पेट पूरी तरह से भरा हुआ होता था, तो वे अपनी माँ के ऊपर चढ़ते और कूदते रहते थे और वह गुफा के फर्श पर पड़ी रहती थी। बाघ स्वतन्त्र था और वह परिवार के लिये भोजन की व्यवस्था बनाता था। 

जब वे बड़े हुये और जब उन्होंने अंगों का उपयोग करना सीख लिया तो वे एक असुरक्षित अवस्था में हो गये। कोई भी भालू या भैंसा उन्हें मार सकता था। अब उन्हें पूरे समय उनकी सुरक्षा करनी पड़ती थी। एक नदी की दिशा की ओर भागता था तो दूसरा पानी में चलता था, और तीसरा किसी चट्टान पर चढ़ जाता था। वहाँ चीलों और अजगरों का खतरा होता था। 

और वहाँ से फिसलकर किसी खड्ड में गिर जाने का भी खतरा होता था। उन्हें हर दूसरे क्षण उनकी सुरक्षा करनी होती थी। वे धक्के मार कर उन्हें गुफा में लाते थे और उनमें से कोई एक द्वार के आर-पार लेट जाता था जिससे कि उनका दुबारा से जाना रुक जाये। लेकिन यह कोई स्थाई हल नहीं था।

Describe the end of the tiger's family. 
बाघ के परिवार के अन्त का वर्णन करो।
Answer:
The tigress had gone out for hunting and it was the tiger's turn to remain in the cave and guard the cubs. It was evening and he was lying on the entrance of the cave. But he fell a little asleep and the cubs went out of the cave. He woke up and saw them crossing the river. He thought that soon they would join their mother and come back istian with her. 

After some time he heard some strange unfamiliar noises. He did not see the tigress and the cubs. He roared to call back his family, but no reply came. It was becoming dawn and the birds had started twittering. He went out, crossed the river and followed the scent of his cubs. He reached a valley where there was a path leading to human habitations beyond the jungle. 

He saw far off in the valley that some men were going and they were pulling and pushing an open cart on which were laid out the cubs and their mother. The men were singing and shouting. The tiger watched the revellers. They were so much intoxicated that they did not notice him. The tiger stalked them. The sun came up and his eyes were dazzled. Those men and the cart with the cubs and their mother disappeared from the view of the tiger. Thus the tiger's family came to an end.

बाघिन शिकार के लिये बाहर गई हुई थी और गुफा में रहने की तथा बच्चों की रखवाली करने की बाघ की बारी थी। शाम का समय था और वह गुफा के प्रवेश द्वार पर लेटा हुआ था। लेकिन वह थोड़ा सा सो गया और बच्चे गुफा से बाहर निकल गये। वह जाग पड़ा और उसने उन्हें नदी पार करते हुये देखा। 

उसने सोचा कि शीघ्र ही वे अपनी माँ के साथ शामिल हो जायेंगे और उसी के साथ वापस लौट आयेंगे । कुछ समय बाद उसने कुछ अजीब सा अनजाना सा शोर सुना। उसे बाघिन और बच्चे नहीं दिखाई दिये। अपने परिवार को वापस बुलाने के लिये वह गरजा। परन्तु कोई उत्तर नहीं आया। सुबह हो रही थी और पक्षियों ने चहचहाना शुरू कर दिया था। वह बाहर निकला, नदी को पार किया और बच्चों की गन्ध के पीछे-पीछे चला। 

वह एक घाटी पर पहुँचा जहाँ जंगल के दूसरी ओर बसी हुई मानव बस्तियों तक की ओर जाने वाला एक रास्ता था। उसने घाटी में दूर देखा कि कुछ लोग जा रहे थे और वे एक खुली हुई गाड़ी को खींच रहे थे और धक्का मार रहे थे जिस गाड़ी पर वे बच्चे और उनकी माँ बिखरे हुये पड़े थे। वे लोग गा रहे थे और चीख चिल्ला रहे थे। बाघ ने आनन्द मनाते हुये उन लोगों को देखा। वे नशे में इतने धुत थे कि उन्होंने उसे नहीं देखा। वह बाघ लुका छिपी करते हुये उनका पीछा करता रहा। सूरज ऊपर चढ़ आया और उसकी आँखें चौंधियाने लगीं। वे लोग तथा वह गाड़ी जिस पर बच्चे और उनकी माँ पड़े हुये थे, उसके दिखाई देने से गायब हो गये। इस प्रकार से बाघ के परिवार का अन्त हो गया।

Question 10. 
How was the tiger passing the next few days and nights? 
अगले कुछ दिन और रात वह बाघ किस प्रकार से बिता रहा था? 
Answer:
Hidden near the village the tiger spent his first night in watching the dead bodies of his cubs and the tigress and in trying to enter the village. On the second night he became successful in catching an animal of the village and appeased his hunger. Later the villager realized that he had lost an animal and he also saw the blood stains. So he had to change his strategy. 

He chose a smaller animal from the herd returning to the village in the evening. He did not stay at one place and kept moving along the mountain ranges. He found that bellow the mountain ranges, these were human habitations and in the evenings the cattle were driven back. He could repeat his tactics. He lay in wait, seized the last one and vanished. Thus he was passing the next few days and nights.

गाँव के पास में छिपकर उस बाघ ने अपने बच्चों तथा बाघिन के मृत शरीरों को देखते हुये अपनी पहली रात बिताई और गाँव में घुसने की भी कोशिश की। दूसरी रात को वह गाँव के एक जानवर को पकड़ने में सफल हुआ और अपनी भूख को शान्त किया। बाद में गाँव वाले उस व्यक्ति को यह एहसास हो गया कि उसका एक जानवर कम है और उसने खून के धब्बों को भी देखा। इसलिये बाघ को अपनी रणनीति बदलनी पड़ी।

शाम के समय गाँव की ओर लौटते हुये पशुओं में से वह किसी एक छोटे जानवर को चुन लेता था। वह एक स्थान पर नहीं रुकता था और पर्वत श्रृंखला के सहारे चलता रहता था। उसने देखा कि उन पर्वत श्रृंखलाओं से नीचे की ओर मानव बस्तियाँ थीं और शाम के समय पशु हाँक कर वापस लाये जाते थे। वह अपने युद्ध कौशल को दोहरा सकता था। वह प्रतीक्षा करते हुये पड़ा रहता था, अन्तिम पशु को पकड़ लेता था और गायब हो जाता था। इस प्रकार से वह अगले कुछ दिन और रात व्यतीत कर रहा था।

What was the plight of the tiger when surrounded by men in the enclosure?
जब बाघ बाड़े में लोगों से घिर गया तब उसकी क्या दुर्दशा थी?
Answer:
The tiger entered the enclosure of sheeps in the darkness of the night. He caught a lamb. But the sheeps started bleating so loudly that the villagers woke up in a moment they came out screaming and surrounded the enclosure. They were holding up flaming torches, hatchets, crowbars and heavy sticks. In confusion the tiger lost the way out. 

He only kept running round and round. The villagers threw spears at him. They also hit him with arrows. The sight of the flaming torches was completely unnerving. He left the lamb and he was desperately trying to find a way out. But here the fire was choking, blinding and scorching. A man threw his torch on him and this burnt him. 

Another man threw a spear which entered his side. They were throwing huge stones at him. In a way they wanted to murder him. He was bleeding from the cuts on his face. It was unbearable for him and he felt as if he were going to die.

वह बाघ रात के अंधेरे में भेड़ों के बाड़े में घुस गया। उसने एक मेमने को पकड़ लिया। लेकिन भेड़ों ने इतने जोर से चिल्लाना शुरू कर दिया कि गाँव वाले जाग गये और एक ही पल में वे चीखते-चिल्लाते आ गये और उस बाड़े को घेर लिया। वे जलती हुई मशालें, कुल्हाड़ियाँ, लोहे के डंडे और भारी लाठियाँ उठाये हुए थे। असमंजस में पड़कर वह बाघ बाहर निकलने का रास्ता भूल गया। वह केवल गोल-गोल घूमता रहा । गाँव वालों ने उसके ऊपर भाले फेंके। उन्होंने उसे तीरों से भी चोट पहुँचाई । 

जलती हुई मशालों का दृश्य पूरे तरीके से घबराहट पैदा कर देने वाला था। उसने मेमने को छोड़ दिया और वह हताश होकर बाहर निकलने का रास्ता खोजने की कोशिश कर रहा था। लेकिन यहाँ पर आग दमघोंट हो रही थी, अंधा कर देने वाली हो रही थी और उसे झुलसा रही थी। एक आदमी ने उस पर मशाल फेंक कर मारी और उसे झुलसा दिया।

दूसरे ने भाला फेंक कर मारा जो उसकी बगल में घुस गया। वे उस पर भारी पत्थर भी फेंक कर मार रहे थे। एक तरीके से वे उसकी हत्या कर देना चाहते थे। उसके चेहरे के घावों से खून बह रहा था। उसके लिये यह असहनीय हो गया था और उसे ऐसा लग रहा था जैसे कि मानो वह मरने ही वाला हो।

Question 12. 
How could he escape from the village's people? 
वह गाँव के लोगों से कैसे बच कर भाग पाया?
Answer:
In the darkness of the night the tiger entered a village. All were asleep. He saw an enclosure where there were sheeps. He went there and caught one of them. They bleated so loudly that the villagers woke up and surrounded him. They had injured him much with spears, arrows and stones. The flames of the torches in their hands were scorching to him. 

He had dropped the lamb and was running hopelessly to save himself. In the mean time a boy was holding his torch too close to the fence and it caught fire. Now the attention of the villagers was diverted. Now they wanted to save their sheeps from the fire. So they demolished the fence and opened a way out. The sheeps started running out. The tiger also came out with the sheeps and escaped from the village.

रात के अन्धकार में बाघ एक गाँव में घुस गया था। सब सोये हुए थे। उसने एक बाड़े को देखा जहाँ भेड़ें थीं। वह वहाँ पहुँच गया और उनमें से एक को पकड़ लिया। वे इतने जोर से चिल्लाईं कि गाँव वाले जाग गये और उन्होंने उसे घेर लिया। उन्होंने उसे अपने भालों से, तीरों से और पत्थरों से बहुत घायल कर दिया। उनके हाथों में लगी हुईं मशालें उसे झुलसाने वाली थीं। उसने मेमने को छोड़ दिया और वह अपने आपको बचाने के लिये हताश होकर भाग रहा था।

इसी बीच में एक लड़का अपनी मशाल को घेरने वाली बाड़ के बहुत पास लिये हुए था और उसने आग पकड़ ली। अब गाँव वालों का ध्यान दूसरी ओर चला गया। वे अपनी भेड़ों को आग से बचाना चाहते थे। इसलिये उन्होंने बाड़ को ध्वस्त कर दिया और बाहर निकलने का एक रास्ता खोल दिया। भेड़ों ने बाहर भागना शुरू कर दिया। वह बाघ भी भेड़ों के साथ बाहर निकल आया और उस गाँव से भाग गया।

The tiger was badly surrounded by men in the enclosure of the sheep. They were screaming and shouting obscenities at him. They had decided that the tiger must not escape. They came rushing in a large mumber. They were holding up the flaming torches, hatchets, crowbars and heavy sticks. The tiger wanted to run away with the lamb; but in confusion he lost the way out. 

They were throwing spears, arrows and stones at him. They were also scorching him with flaming torches. He was badly injured and running round and round to save himself. So he thought about men that they are very devilish. Somehow he could escape. Later on he thought that man may look small and without teeth or claws, but he has some strange power and he can control over a tiger or an elephant.

बाघ बुरी तरह से भेड़ के बाड़े में लोगों द्वारा घेर लिया गया था। वे चीख चिल्ला रहे थे तथा उसके लिये अपमानजनक भाषा का प्रयोग कर रहे थे। वे यह निश्चय कर चुके थे कि बाघ बचना नहीं चाहिये। वे भारी संख्या में दौड़कर आए। उन्होंने अपने हाथों में जलती हुई मशालें ले रखी थीं तथा उन्होंने कुल्हाड़ी, सब्बल और भारी लट्ठ ले रखे थे। 

बाघ मेमने को उठाकर भागना चाहता था लेकिन घबराहट में वह रास्ता भटक गया। लोग उस पर तीर, भाले और पत्थर फेंक रहे थे। वे जलती मशालों से उसको झुलसा भी रहे थे। वह बुरी तरह से घायल हो गया था और बचने के लिये गोलाई में घूम रहा था। बाघ ने लोगों के बारे में सोचा कि वे राक्षसी प्रवृत्ति के हैं। किसी तरह वह बच सका। बाद में उसने सोचा कि मनुष्य बिना दाँतों और पंजों के छोटा दिखाई दे सकता है लेकिन उसके पास एक विचित्र शक्ति है और वह बाघ या हाथी पर भी नियन्त्रण कर सकता है।

Describe Captain's relation with his wife.
कैप्टन का अपनी पत्नी के साथ सम्बन्ध का वर्णन करो।
Answer:
While taking breakfast, captain says with pride that all his animals were in good condition. His wife said that it was so because he cared them better than his family. She blames him of not taking care about his family and says that he can only think about his animals. Captain said that his profession with these animals gave him money which was so much needed for her and for her family at Madras. 

They remained depending on him. At least one of her brothers could come and do some work for him. She said that it was enough that she was working like a slave for him. 

She wanted to leave the work. Captain became upset and left the place. Now she began to flatter him. On seeing this anyone may think that he was not on good terms with his wife. But it was not so. Such talks are very common among every husband and wife.

नाश्ता करते समय कैप्टन गर्व के साथ कहता है कि उसके सभी जानवर अच्छी हालत में हैं। उसकी पत्नी ने कहा कि ऐसा इसलिये है क्योंकि वह अपने परिवार की अपेक्षा उनकी अधिक परवाह करता है। वह उस पर अपने परिवार की देखभाल न करने का आरोप लगाती है और कही है कि वह केवल अपने जानवरों के बारे में ही सोच सकता है। कैप्टन ने कहा कि इन जानवरों के साथ उसका यह व्यवसाय उसे पैसा देता है जिसकी बहुत ज्यादा जरूरत उसे और मद्रास में उसके परिवार को रहती है, वे उसी के ऊपर निर्भर बने रहते हैं।

कम से कम उसका एक भाई यहाँ आकर उसके लिये कुछ काम कर सकता है। उस पत्नी ने कहा कि इतना ही पर्याप्त है कि वह गुलाम की तरह उसके लिये काम कर रही है। वह तो काम करना छोड़ना चाहती थी। कैप्टन का दिमाग परेशान हो गया और वह उस स्थान से चला गया। अब वह उसकी चापलूसी करने लगी। इसे देखकर कोई भी ऐसा सोच सकता है कि उसका सम्बन्ध अपनी पत्नी के साथ अच्छा नहीं था। परन्तु ऐसा नहीं था। ऐसी बातचीतें प्रत्येक पति-पत्नी के बीच में बहुत सामान्य रहा करती हैं।

How was the tiger carried away for his onward journey? 
उस बाघ को आगे की यात्रा पर कैसे ले जाया गया?
Answer:
The trap was narrow. The tiger had to keep standing. This trap was loaded on a bullock cart. The driver kept yelling and whipping the bullocks. The cart rolled on rough ground and the tiger jolted from side to side. He felt strangely uncomfortable. The trap was screened from all around. This cart was passing through many villages and town. 

From time to time, they stopped. The bullocks were unyoked to give them rest. The front portion of the carriage rested on the ground and the floor sloped forward and he kept sliding down. It was uncomfortable and he roared out his displeasure. The people surrounding the cage ran with fear. After some days they reached their destination. Thus the tiger was carried away for his onward journey.

वह पिंजड़ा सँकरा था। बाघ को उसमें खड़ा रहना पड़ रहा था। इस पिंजड़े को एक बैलगाड़ी पर लादा गया। गाड़ी चलाने वाला चिल्लाता रहता था और बैलों को कोड़े से मारता रहता था। गाड़ी ऊबड़-खाबड़ जमीन पर लुढ़कती हुई चलती थी और बाघ एक ओर से दूसरी ओर को झटके खाता था। 

उसे अजीब प्रकार से बेचैनी का अनुभव हो रहा था। पिंजड़े को चारों तरफ से ढक दिया गया था। यह गाड़ी बहुत से गाँवों और कस्बों से होकर गुजर रही थी। समय-समय पर वे लोग रुक जाते थे। बैलों को आराम देने के लिये गाड़ी से खोल दिया जाता था। गाड़ी का आगे का हिस्सा जमीन पर टिक जाता था और फर्श में आगे की ओर ढाल हो जाता था और वह नीचे की ओर फिसलता था। बेचैनी होती थी और वह अपनी नाराजगी के कारण गरजता था। पिंजड़े को घेरे हुये लोग डर के मारे भागते थे। कुछ दिनों के बाद वे अपने लक्ष्य पर पहुँच गये। इस प्रकार से बाघ को अपनी आगे की यात्रा पर ले जाया गया था।

Question 16. 
Why does the tiger remember the hermit who told him something about the hell?
बाघ उस साधु-महात्मा को याद क्यों करता है जिसने उसे नरक के बारे में कुछ बताया था?
Answer:
The cage in which he was carried to the circus was placed down. He was to be pushed into another cage. Captain came and proded him with his staff and hit him and also commanded in stern words. He created a noise on the bars which confuse his mind. Again he jabbed his side with his staff. He was in a miserable condition and ran round and round in the narrow space. He tried to keep away from the staff and found himself in another cage. 

As the night came on he heard a lion roar and the voices of other jungle fellows. He was bewildered and did not know why he was brought there. It was irritating for him to stay there. He only lay down and got up and again lay down and got up. 

He kept turning round and round grumbling. He found this an impossible condition of living. He was not given any food. On the fourth day he felt very hungry. He was helpless and hopeless behind the bars. The tiger remembers the hermit who told him something that this was the hell.

जिस पिंजड़े में वह सर्कस तक लाया गया था उसे नीचे उतार कर रखा गया था। उसे एक दूसरे पिंजड़े में धकेला जाना था। कैप्टन आया और उसने अपने डंडे को उसे चुभोया और उस पर चोट मारी और कठोर शब्दों में उसे आदेश दिया। उसने लोहे की छड़ों पर शोर पैदा किया जिससे उस बाघ का दिमाग चकरा गया। फिर उसने अपने डंडे को उसके बगल में घुसाया। वह एक दयनीय स्थिति में आ गया और उस सँकरे से स्थान में गोल-गोल दौड़ने लगा। वह डंडे से दूर रहने की कोशिश करता था 

और फिर उसने अपने आपको एक दूसरे पिंजड़े में पाया। जब रात हुई उसने शेर की दहाड़ को सुना और जंगल के दूसरे साथियों की आवाजों को भी सुना। वह उलझन और अचरज में था और वह यह नहीं जानता था कि उसे यहाँ क्यों लाया गया था। वहाँ रुके रहने में उसे चिड़चिड़ाहट होती थी। वह केवल लेटता था 

और उठ जाता था और फिर दुबारा से लेटता था और उठ जाता था। वह गोल-गोल घूमता था और गुर्राता था। उसे जीवन की यह एक असम्भव हालत महसूस हुई। उसे कुछ भी खाने को नहीं दिया गया। चौथे दिन उसे बहुत भूख लगी। वह उन लोहे की छडों के पीछे असहाय और निराश था। उस बाघ को वह महात्मा याद आता है जिसने उसे कुछ ऐसा बताया था कि यही नरक था।

How was the tiger given the training of running round and round in the enclosure?
बाघ को उस आहाते के अन्दर गोल-गोल दौड़ने का प्रशिक्षण किस प्रकार से दिया गया?
Answer:
The tiger’s cage was opened in a large enclosure. He jumped out of it. He wanted to show his gratefulness for this freedom. But he felt very weak and his legs could not support him. He wanted to lie down. But captain was there. He would not let him lie down. He was uttering a command in a loud voice. He held a long whip in one hand and a chair in the other. 

He lashed his face several times. He used the chair as a shield. He commanded, “Run, run," and kept repeating it with every lashing. The tiger could understand nothing and he was in pain. He thought of pouncing on captain. But that chair made it impossible for him to approach him while the whip could easily reach to him. He stood paralyzed and in great suffering. 

Some animal advised him to run round and round. The tiger followed his advice and ran in circles which was in search of nothing and that seemed a very foolish and senseless act. After much runing, he felt to be fainting and lay down in his cage. Next day he repeated the same act. Thus he was given the training of running.

बाघ का पिंजड़ा एक बड़े से आहाते में खोल दिया गया। वह उसमें से कूद कर बाहर आ गया। वह अपनी आजादी के लिये अपनी कृतज्ञता दिखाना चाहता था। लेकिन उसे बड़ी कमजोरी महसूस हो रही थी और टाँगें उसका साथ नहीं दे रही थीं। वह लेट जाना चाहता था। लेकिन वहाँ पर कैप्टन था। वह उसको लेटने नहीं देता था। वह जोर की आवाज में आदेश दे रहा था। वह एक हाथ में लम्बा सा कोड़ा लिये हुए था और दूसरे हाथ में एक कुर्सी उठाये हुये था। उसने उसके चेहरे पर कई बार कोड़े मारे|

वह कुर्सी का उपयोग ढाल के रूप में करता था। उसने आदेश दिया, "दौड़ो, दौड़ो" और हर बार कोड़े मारने के साथ-साथ इसी को दोहराता रहा। बाघ की समझ में कुछ न आ सका और उसे दर्द हो रहा था। उसने कैप्टन के ऊपर झपटने के बारे में सोचा। परन्तु उस कुर्सी ने उस तक पहुँचना उसके लिये असम्भव कर दिया था जबकि वह कोड़ा आसानी से उस तक पहुँचता था। वह बड़ी ही तकलीफ में ऐसे खड़ा था जै से उसे लकवा मार गया हो। किसी जानवर ने उसे यह सलाह दी कि गोल-गोल दौड़ो । 

बाघ ने उसकी सलाह मान ली और वह गोले में दौड़ने लगा। यह दौड़ किसी भी वस्तु की तलाश में नहीं थी और इसी से यह मूर्खतापूर्ण और बेमतलब का कार्य प्रतीत हो रहा था। बहुत दौड़ने के पश्चात् उसे बेहोशी सी आने लगी और वह अपने पिंजड़े में लेट गया। अगले दिन उसने वही कार्य दुबारा से दोहराया। इस प्रकार से उसे दौड़ने का प्रशिक्षण दिया गया।

Question 18. 
Who was Jaggu? 
जग्गू कौन था?
Answer:
Jaggu was the hero of the story. He was a strong man. Madan who was the film producer saw him at a village market fair. He was standing on a little platform and challenging the people around him to come up and wrestle. When his challenge was accepted, a group of four fell on him. He threw them off with the back of his hand. 

Thus he was earning money from the defeated people. It was his main source of income. His wife collected the money. He made shows of his strength. He snapped chains, bent and twisted iron rods, broke the stone with the edge of his palm and even offered to run a road engine over his chest. His wife went round collecting the money. 

The film producer visited his hut and offered him five hundred rupees a month for one year with food to join him and do whatever role he gave him. Now the film producer wanted to combine Jaggu with the tiger in his story.

जग्गू कहानी का नायक था। वह एक बलशाली व्यक्ति था। मदन जो कि फिल्म निर्माता था उसने जग्गू को एक ग्रामीण बाजार के मेले में देखा था। वह एक छोटे से चबूतरे पर खड़ा हुआ था और अपने चारों ओर के लोगों को आने और कुश्ती लड़ने के लिये चुनौती दे रहा था। जब उसकी चुनौती को स्वीकार कर लिया गया तो चार लोग इकट्ठे उसके ऊपर टूट पड़े। उसने अपने हाथ के पीछे के भाग से उन सबको फेंक दिया। इस प्रकार से वह हारे हुये लोगों से धन कमा रहा था। यही उसकी आमदनी का मुख्य जरिया था। 

उसकी पत्नी पैसा इकट्ठा करती थी। वह अपनी ताकत का प्रदर्शन करता था। वह जंजीरों को तोड़ देता था, लोहे की छड़ों को मोड़ देता था और मरोड़ देता था, अपनी हथेली के किनारे से पत्थर को तोड़ देता था और अपनी छाती पर रोड इंजन को भी चढ़वा लेता था। उसकी पत्नी धन इकट्ठा करते हुये चक्कर लगाती थी। वह फिल्म प्रोड्यूसर उसकी झोंपड़ी पर गया और उसने एक साल तक हर महीने उसे पाँच सौ रुपये देने का प्रस्ताव किया और साथ में उसे भोजन भी देने के लिये कहा और यह कहा कि वह जो कुछ भी भूमिका उसे देगा वह उसे करेगा। अब वह फिल्म निर्माता अपनी कहानी में जग्गू के साथ उस बाघ को शामिल करना चाहता था।

Question 19. 
How did captain lose his life at the paw of the tiger? 
बाघ के पंजों से किस प्रकार कैप्टन का जीवन समाप्त हो गया?
Ans.
The tiger was brought out of the cage. Captain ordered him, "up, up” and hit him on his legs till he lifted them. It was a terrible trial and very painful. This went on day after day. They devised a method to stand him on his hind legs. 

They hung a lamb before him. As he reached there, the lamb rose gradually. The tiger stretched himself fully and stood up like a human being and fell forward. A creature needs the support of four legs. It was not only difficult but also degradation for a quadruped. He was too exposed. This act was repeated so many times that the tiger was sick of it. He refused to take note on the lamb hanging before him.

Captain was compelling him to come out of the cage. He was whiping and yelling. But he could not move him out of the cage. Now he brought out a novel object. It shot out a tongue of metal. As it touched the tiger, he felt blinded with strange kind of pain, and he ran out of the cage. He fell down on the ground. His legs were aching. 

But captain would not let him lie down. Captain lashed him in the face and cried very loudly. The tiger only felt angry. He wanted to tell captain that he should go away before any harm befell on him. He would never go back to his cage. He would not do any meaningless act. Captain was a stubborn fellow. He hit the tiger with his whip on his nose. It hurt him most. He let out a 'roar. This made him more angry. He again hit the tiger over his eyes.

He screamed loudly to tell captain to go away or his life was in danger. Now he brought out the dreadful instrument which shot out a metal tongue. The tiger was thinking that he should not fear that creature. So as a final warning, he growled and raised his paw. Captain ran forward with that metal tongue. 

As he bent down to touch him with it, the tiger raised his paw to knock the thing out of his hand. The blow caught captain under his chin tore off his head. Captain lost his life. After this there was much confusion and excitement and running.

बाघ को पिंजड़े से बाहर निकाला गया। कैप्टन ने उसे आदेश दिया, "ऊपर उठाओ, ऊपर उठाओ।" और उसने उसकी टांगों पर चोट मारी अन्त में उसने टाँगों को ऊपर उठाया। यह एक भयंकर प्रशिक्षण था और बहुत कष्टकारी था। यह दिन-प्रतिदिन ऐसे ही चलता रहा। उन्होंने उसको उसके पिछले पैरों पर खड़ा करने के लिये एक तरीका निकाल लिया। उन्होंने उसके सामने एक मैमना लटका दिया।

जैसे ही वह वहाँ पहुँचा, वह मैमना धीरे से ऊपर उठ गया। बाघ ने अपने आपको पूरा फैलाया और एक आदमी की तरह खड़ा हुआ और आगे की ओर गिर पड़ा। किसी प्राणी को चार पैरों की सहायता की आवश्यकता होती है। किसी चौपाये के लिये यह केवल कठिन ही नहीं बल्कि उसका अपमान भी है। वह बहुत ही अधिक नंगा दिखाई देता है। यह कार्य इतने अधिक बार दोहराया गया कि बाघ इससे परेशान हो उठा था। उसने मैमने पर ध्यान देना बन्द कर दिया जो उसके सामने लटका हुआ था।

कैप्टन बाघ को पिंजड़े से बाहर आने के लिये मजबूर कर रहा था। वह कोड़े लगा रहा था और चिल्ला रहा था। लेकिन वह उसके पिंजड़े से बाहर नहीं निकाल पा रहा था। अब उसने एक अजीब वस्तु निकाली। इसमें धातु की एक जीभ तेजी से बाहर निकली। जैसे ही उसने बाघ को छुआ वह अजीब प्रकार के दर्द से अंधा सा हो गया और वह पिंजड़े से बाहर दौड़ा। वह जमीन पर गिर पड़ा। उसकी टाँगों में दर्द हो रहा था लेकिन कैप्टन उसे लेटने नहीं देता था। कैप्टन ने उसके चेहरे पर कोड़े लगाये और वह बहुत जोर से चिल्लाया। बाघ को केवल क्रोध ही आया। वह कैप्टन को बताना चाहता था कि उसकी कोई हानि हो उससे पहले ही उसे दूर चले जाना चाहिये। वह अपने पिंजड़े में वापस कभी नहीं जायेगा। वह किसी भी निरर्थक कार्य को नहीं करेगा।

कैप्टन जिद्दी व्यक्ति था। उसने बाघ की नाक पर कोड़ों की चोट की। इससे वह बहुत ही चोटिल हुआ। वह गरजा । इस बात से वह और भी अधिक नाराज हो गया। उसने फिर से बाघ को उसकी आँखों पर चोट मारी। वह जोर से चिल्लाया और उसने कैप्टन से कहा कि चले जाओ नहीं तो उसका जीवन खतरे में है। अब उसने वह भयंकर यन्त्र निकाला जिसमें से धातु की जीभ तेजी से बाहर निकलती थी। बाघ सोच रहा था कि उसे इस प्राणी से डरना नहीं चाहिये।

इसलिये अन्तिम चेतावनी के रूप में वह गुर्राया और उसने अपना पंजा ऊपर उठाया। कैप्टन धातु की उस जीभ को लिये हुये आगे की ओर दौड़ा। जैसे ही वह उसको इससे छूने के लिये नीचे की ओर झुका, वैसे ही बाघ ने उस वस्तु को उसके हाथ से अलग करने के लिये अपना पंजा ऊपर उठाया। यह प्रहार कैप्टन की ठोढ़ी के नीचे लगा और उसका सिर टूटकर अलग हो गया। कैप्टन का जीवन समाप्त हो गया। इसके बाद वहाँ बहुत ही हड़बड़ाहट और भागदौड़ हुई।

Then Jaggu suddenly ran and entered the cage and pulled down the door. The tiger enetred Market Road. People ran for their lives at the sight of the tiger. Some street dogs were inviting death when they were barking madly. 

He rested for a moment at the door of Anand Bhavan on Market Road. The schools were being closed and children were running out happily. They were shouting and laughing. The tiger felt that he should also join them. So he started moving after them. They ran back to school and tiger also followed them.

He screamed loudly to tell captain to go away or his life was in danger. Now he brought out the dreadful instrument which shot out a metal tongue. The tiger was thinking that he should not fear that creature. So as a final warning, he growled and raised his paw. Captain ran forward with that metal tongue. As he bent down to touch him with it, the tiger raised his paw to knock the thing out of his hand. The blow caught captain under his chin tore off his head. Captain lost his life. After this there was much confusion and excitement and running.

बाघ को पिंजड़े से बाहर निकाला गया। कैप्टन ने उसे आदेश दिया, "ऊपर उठाओ, ऊपर उठाओ।" और उसने उसकी टांगों पर चोट मारी अन्त में उसने टाँगों को ऊपर उठाया। यह एक भयंकर प्रशिक्षण था और बहुत कष्टकारी था। यह दिन-प्रतिदिन ऐसे ही चलता रहा। उन्होंने उसको उसके पिछले पैरों पर खड़ा करने के लिये एक तरीका निकाल लिया। उन्होंने उसके सामने एक मैमना लटका दिया। जैसे ही वह वहाँ पहुँचा, वह मैमना धीरे से ऊपर उठ गया।

बाघ ने अपने आपको पूरा फैलाया और एक आदमी की तरह खड़ा हुआ और आगे की ओर गिर पड़ा। किसी प्राणी को चार पैरों की सहायता की आवश्यकता होती है। किसी चौपाये के लिये यह केवल कठिन ही नहीं बल्कि उसका अपमान भी है। वह बहुत ही अधिक नंगा दिखाई देता है। यह कार्य इतने अधिक बार दोहराया गया कि बाघ इससे परेशान हो उठा था। उसने मैमने पर ध्यान देना बन्द कर दिया जो उसके सामने लटका हुआ था।

कैप्टन को मारने के बाद, वह बाघ पहली बार स्वतन्त्र रूप से घूमने-फिरने के लिये खड़ा हुआ। सब कुछ छोड़-छाड़ कर लोग अपने आपको बचाने के लिये भागे। वह बाघ पिंजड़े से कुछ दूर चला गया। फिर जग्गू अचानक से भागा और पिंजड़े में घुस गया और दरवाजा नीचे खींच कर लगा लिया। बाघ मार्केट रोड पर प्रवेश कर गया। लोग बाघ को देखकर अपनी-अपनी जिन्दगी बचाने के लिये भागे। कुछ गली के कुत्ते अपनी मौत को आमन्त्रित कर रहे थे जिस समय कि वे पागल से होकर उस पर भौंक रहे थे। 

उसने मार्केट रोड पर आनन्द भवन के दरवाजे पर थोड़ी देर के लिये विश्राम किया। स्कूल बन्द किये जा रहे थे और बच्चे प्रसन्नतापूर्वक बाहर की ओर दौड़ रहे थे। वे चीख चिल्ला रहे थे और हँस रहे थे। बाघ को ऐसा लगा कि वह भी इन बच्चों के साथ शामिल हो जाये। इसलिये उसने उनके पीछे चलना शुरू कर दिया। वे दौड़कर वापस स्कूल में गये और बाघ भी उनके पीछे-पीछे आ गया।

बच्चों को स्कूल के एक हॉल में बन्द कर लिया गया और उसने एक कमरे का खुला हुआ दरवाजा देखा इसलिये वह वहाँ चला गया। यह हैडमास्टर का कमरा था। हैडमास्टर मेज पर से कूदा और अपनी सुरक्षा के लिये एक अटारी में पहुँच गया। बाघ चलता हुआ अन्दर आया और ठंडे फर्श पर बैठ गया। उसने अपना सिर बड़ी से डैस्क के नीचे डाल लिया और वह सोने जा रहा था। किसी ने बाहर की ओर से ताला लगा दिया।

Describe the role of Alphonse.
ऐलफौन्से की भूमिका का वर्णन करो।
Answer:
The tiger was sleeping in the headmaster's room of a school. The people and teachers who were in the school were in panic. They had locked the room from outside. They remembered Alphonse who was a hunter and had a gun. He could kill the tiger and give relief to them. He arrived on a motor-cycle carrying a gun. There was a hermit whom the tiger regarded as his master.

Alphonse shouted to keep away and he would not be responsible if anyone was hurt. He would shoot the tiger through the door. The people objected to opening the door. Then Alphonse demanded a ladder. He would remove some of the tiles and shoot the tiger from the roof.

Two boys came through carrying a ladder. Alphonse climbed the ladder followed by the two boys. He removed a few tiles. Soon an opening was made. The headmaster tried to stand up but hit his head on the rafters. Alphonse saw the tiger. Now he needed a saw to cut the rafters. The saw was brought.

Now a jeep arrived. They were the people of Save Tiger Committee. They asked Alphonse to come down. The hermit showed his gratefulness to them saying that he was going to murder the tiger. The headmaster was also in danger. The chairman of the committee said that there was a law issued by the government which prohibited shooting of any tiger in any part of India.

A hot discussion went on between Alphonse and the committee men. Then he took the chairman aside under a tree. They talked something in whisper. The tiger was declared a man-eater and Alphonse was given a written permission to shoot the tiger. Again Alphonse was ready with his gun. He sat down on the verandah steps. 

He took out some wine bottle from his pocket and drank it. The hermit asked him if he would like have some rest. Alphonse fell flat on the ground and became unconscious. The hermit took the tiger away peacefully. Late in the evening Alphonse woke up and thought that he was befooled. With this off he went on his motor cycle.

बाघ एक स्कूल के हैडमास्टर के कमरे में सो रहा था। जो लोग और अध्यापक वहाँ पर थे वे सब भयभीत थे। उन्होंने कमरे में बाहर से ताला लगा दिया था। उन्हें ऐलफौन्से की याद आई जो एक शिकारी था और उसके पास एक बन्दूक थी। वह बाघ को मार सकता था और उन्हें राहत दे सकता था। वह एक बन्दूक लिये हुये मोटर साइकिल पर आया । वहाँ एक साधु था जिसको बाघ अपने स्वामीजी के रूप में सम्मान देता था।

ऐलफौन्से लोगों से दूर हट जाने के लिये चिल्लाया और यदि किसी को चोट लग गई तो वह जिम्मेदार नहीं होगा। वह दरवाजे में से होकर बाघ को गोली मार देगा। लोगों ने दरवाजा खोलने का विरोध किया। इसके बाद ऐलफौन्से ने एक सीढ़ी की मांग की। वह छत की कुछ टाइलों को हटायेगा और वहीं से बाघ को गोली मारेगा।

दो लड़के सीढ़ी लेकर आये। ऐलफौन्से सीढ़ी पर चढ़ गया और दोनों लड़के भी उसके पीछे-पीछे चढ़ गये। उसने कुछ टाइलों को हटाया। शीघ्र ही एक खुला हुआ स्थान बन गया। हैडमास्टर ने खड़े होने की कोशिश की लेकिन उसका सिर शहतीर से टकराया। ऐलफौन्से ने बाघ को देखा। अब उसे शहतीर काटने के लिये एक आरी की जरूरत थी। आरी लाई गई।

इसी समय एक जीप आ गई । वे बाघ रक्षा समिति के लोग थे। उन्होंने ऐलफौन्से से नीचे आने के लिये कहा। साधु ने यह कहते हुये उन लोगों का आभार व्यक्त किया कि वह आदमी बाघ की हत्या करने जा रहा था। हैडमास्टर का जीवन भी खतरे में था। समिति के अध्यक्ष ने कहा कि सरकार के द्वारा एक कानून बनाया गया है जो भारत में किसी भी स्थान पर किसी भी बाघ पर गोली चलाने के लिये मना करता है। ऐलफौन्से और समिति के लोगों के बीच गर्मागर्म बहस हुई। इसके बाद वह अध्यक्ष को एक पेड़ के नीचे अलग ले गया। उन्होंने फुसफुसाहट में कुछ बातें कीं। बाघ को नरभक्षी घोषित कर दिया गया और ऐलफौन्से को बाघ को गोली मारने की एक लिखित अनुमति दे दी गई।

फिर दुबारा से ऐलफौन्से अपनी बन्दूक के साथ तैयार हो गया। वह बरामदे की सीढ़ियों पर बैठ गया। उसने अपनी जेब से कोई शराब की बोतल निकाली और उसे पी गया। साधु ने उससे पूछा कि क्या वह कुछ आराम करना चाहेगा। ऐलफौन्से सीधा जमीन पर लेट गया और वह अचेत हो गया। वह साधु उस बाघ को शान्तिपूर्वक अपने साथ ले गया। देर शाम को ऐलफौन्से जागा और उसने सोचा कि उसे मूर्ख बनाया गया है। इसी के साथ वह अपनी मोटर साइकिल पर बैठ कर चला गया।

बाघ ने आगन्तुक व्यक्तियों की कौन-कौनसी बातों को सुना?

The hermit had chosen a remote part of the jungle to live in. Still people were coming to him. The hermit asked the tiger to keep himself out of view so that they might come without fear. The tiger went behind lantana bushes. They asked from a distance if swamiji was there and said that they had come for his darshan. 

The hermit asked them not to use the word darshan and he was not swamiji. They should not think of sitting at his feet. It is a mental slavery. He also said that they should not be afraid of the tiger. They wanted to prostrate but the hermit did not allow them. They offered him a basket of fruits and flowers. He took just a single flower and a small banana. They said that they were from both the sides whom he found fighting. They had come to assure him that they would not fight again. The hermit said that if people nurture hatred, they waste their lives in fighting.

उस साधु ने रहने के लिये जंगल में एक सुदूर हिस्सा चुना था। फिर भी लोग उसके पास आ रहे थे। साधु ने बाघ से कहा कि वह अपने आपको दिखाई देने से छिपा ले जिससे कि वे भयभीत हुये बिना आ सकें। वह बाघ लन्ताना झाड़ियों के पीछे चला गया। उन लोगों ने दूर से ही पूछा कि क्या स्वामीजी वहाँ पर हैं और कहा कि वे उनके दर्शन के लिये आये हैं। साधु ने उनसे कहा कि दर्शन शब्द का प्रयोग न करो और न ही वह कोई स्वामीजी हैं। उन्हें उनके पैरों के पास बैठने के बारे में नहीं सोचना चाहिये। यह एक मानसिक गुलामी है। 

उन्होंने यह भी कहा कि उन्हें बाघ से नहीं डरना चाहिये। वे साष्टांग प्रणाम करना चाहते थे लेकिन साधु ने उन्हें ऐसा करने की आज्ञा नहीं दी। उन लोगों ने फूल और फलों की एक टोकरी उन्हें भेंट की। उन्होंने केवल एक फूल एक छोटा केला लिया। उन लोगों ने कहा कि वे उन दो पक्षों से आये हुये लोग हैं जिनको उन्होंने लड़ते हुये पाया था। वे उनको यह विश्वास दिलाने आये हैं कि वे फिर दुबारा नहीं लड़ेंगे। साधु ने कहा कि यदि लोग घृणा पालते हैं तो वे अपना जीवन लड़ने में बरबाद करते हैं।

Describe the effect of the jackal's advice on the tiger as well as on the tigress.
उस बाघ और बाधिन के ऊपर सियार की सलाह के प्रभाव का वर्णन करो। 
Answer:
Both the tiger and the. tigress seemed to be agreeing at the jackal's advice. The tiger felt a sudden compassion for the tigress. He also wanted to thank her for leaving him alive. He got up on his feet with difficulty and went limping to the tigress.

He expressed his desire to be friends. He cleaned up the dirty blood covering her eyes and sat beside her doing many acts of tender love. Then she opened her eyes slowly and moved a little. A change had come over her too. She recovered her breath, vision, and the use of her limbs. She followed the tiger quietly and both of them went limping to a pond. There they washed themselves with water and felt a new life.

वह बाघ और बाघिन दोनों ही सियार की सलाह से सहमत होते हुये प्रतीत हुये। बाघ ने बाघिन के प्रति अचानक ही एक दयाभाव महसूस किया। वह अपने को जीवित छोड़ देने के लिये उसे धन्यवाद भी देना चाहता था। वह कठिनाई से अपने पैरों पर खड़ा हुआ और लंगड़ाता हुआ बाघिन के पास गया। उसने मित्र हो जाने की अपनी इच्छा व्यक्त की।

उसने उसकी आँखों के पलकों के ऊपर के गन्दे खून को साफ किया और नाजुक प्रेम के बहुत से क्रियाकलापों को करता हुआ उसी के पास बैठ गया। इसके बाद उस बाघिन ने धीरे-धीरे अपनी आँखें खोलीं और थोड़ा सा हिली-डुली। उसके ऊपर भी एक परिवर्तन आ चुका था। उसकी साँस में सुधार हुआ, दृष्टि ठीक हुई और अंगों को चलाने में भी सुधार हुआ। वह शान्त भाव से बाघ के पीछे-पीछे चल दी और वे दोनों लंगड़ाते हुये एक तालाब पर पहुँचे। वहाँ उन्होंने पानी से अपने आपको धोया और एक नया जीवन महसूस किया।

One evening it was the tiger's turn to guard the cubs. The tigress had gone out in search of pray. The tiger had seen her going down the sandy slope, crossing the river and climbing up on the other side. He had thought that the cubs would be playing inside the cave. He lay down at the entrance. When he was sleepy, the cubs jumped over him and went out of the cave. 

He woke up and saw that the cubs were crossing the river. The tiger felt too lazy to run after them. They were following the smell of their mother. The tiger saw that they were climbing up the opposit bank. He thought that there was no harm in it. They could reach their mother and come back with her. They should also gain the experience how their mother hunted.

एक शाम को बच्चों की रक्षा करने के लिये बाघ की बारी थी। बाघिन शिकार की तलाश में गई हई थी। बाघ ने उसे बालू के ढाल पर नीचे की ओर जाते हुये, नदी पार करते हुये और दूसरी ओर ऊपर चढ़ते हुये देखा था। उसने सोचा था कि बच्चे गुफा के अन्दर खेल रहे होंगे। वह प्रवेश द्वार पर लेट गया था।

जब वह नींद में हुआ तब वे बच्चे उसके ऊपर से होकर कूद गये और गुफा से बाहर निकल गये। वह जाग पड़ा और उसने देखा कि बच्चे नदी पार कर रहे थे। उस बाघ को इतना आलस्य महसूस हुआ कि वह दौड़कर उनके पीछे नहीं गया। वे अपनी माँ की गंध का पीछा कर रहे थे। बाघ ने देखा कि वे दूसरे किनारे पर ऊपर की ओर चढ़ रहे थे। उसने सोचा कि इसमें कोई नुकसान की बात नहीं है। वे अपनी माँ तक पहुँच सकते थे और उसी के साथ वापस भी आ सकते थे। उन्हें भी इस अनुभव को प्राप्त करना चाहिये कि उनकी माँ किस प्रकार से शिकार करती है।

The tiger saw some men going with a cart on which his cubs and the tigress were lying. He moved forward following them but it was day light then and they disappeared from his look. He stayed behind a rock and slept till dusk.

Then he got up and moved in the direction they had gone. When the tiger arrived at a village, he found most of the men asleep. The cart on which the cubs and their mother were lying was left to one side in the village street. He could see it all from his hiding place. The sight of his family lying in such a condition filled him with fury.

बाघ ने कुछ लोगों को एक गाड़ी के साथ जाते हुये देखा था जिस गाड़ी पर बाघिन और उसके बच्चे पड़े हुये थे। वह उनका पीछा करते हुये आगे बढ़ा, परन्तु फिर दिन का प्रकाश हो गया और वे उसकी नजरों से ओझल हो गये। वह एक चट्टान के पीछे रुका रहा और शाम होने तक सोता रहा। फिर वह उठा और जिस दिशा में वे लोग गये थे उसी दिशा में वह भी चला। जब वह बाघ एक गाँव में पहुँचा तो उसने यह पाया कि ज्यादातर लोग सो गये थे। जिस गाड़ी पर बच्चों की माँ और बच्चे पड़े हुये थे वह गांव की सड़क के एक किनारे पर छोड़ दी गई थी। वह अपने छिपने के स्थान से उस सबको देख सकता था। अपने परिवार को ऐसी दशा में पड़े हुये देखने से वह क्रोध से भर उठा।

What happened to the dead bodies of the tiger's family? 
बाघ के परिवार के मृत शरीरों का क्या हुआ?

In a village street the tiger saw the cart and the bodies of his family lying on it. His anger rose. He wanted to pounce upon every creature and kill them. He wanted to pick up the cubs and carry them away. But just at this time there arrived a jeep. Some men came out of it and shouted and called the villagers. 

The village people awoke and a crowd gathered around the cart. There was much jabbering and arguments. The tiger watched that those bodies of his family were the dead bodies and they were transferred to the back of the jep and they drove off. The villagers went back to their homes and silence and darkness fell on the village again.

एक गाँव की गली में बाघ ने उस गाड़ी को देखा और उसके परिवार के शरीर उस पर पड़े हुये थे। उसका क्रोध भड़क उठा। वह हर प्राणी के ऊपर झपट्टा मारना चाहता था और उन्हें मार डालना चाहता था। वह अपने बच्चों को उठाना चाहता था और उन्हें लेकर दूर चले जाना चाहता था। लेकिन ठीक इसी समय वहाँ एक जीप आ गई।

कुछ लोग उसमें से बाहर निकले और चिल्लाये तथा गाँव वालों को आवाज लगाई । गाँव वाले जाग गये और उस गाड़ी के चारों ओर लोगों की एक भीड़ घिर आई। वहाँ बहुत बक-बक और वादविवाद हुआ। बाघ ने यह देखा कि उसके परिवार के वे शरीर मृत शरीर थे और वे जीप में पीछे की ओर रख दिये गये और वे लोग गाड़ी चला ले गये। गाँव वाले अपने-अपने घरों को चले गये और शान्ति तथा अंधेरा फिर दुबारा से उस गाँव में पसर गया।

Question 27. 
How did the tiger pass his first night near the village? 
बाघ ने उस गाँव के पास में अपनी पहली रात कैसे बिताई?
Answer:
The tiger had reached the village and found the inhabitants asleep. He saw the cart and his babies and their mother lying in it. A jeep and some men came in it. The villagers awoke and they talked something. The dead bodies of the cubs and the tigress were put in the back of the jeep and they drove away the jeep. The villagers went to their homes. 

Again there was silence and darkness. The tiger came out of his hiding place. But the street dogs started barking and the villagers woke up again. The tiger went back to his hiding place. Now the morning came and the women were coming to the well for water. He moved back and hid himself behind the bushes. Thus the tiger pass his first night.

बाघ गाँव तक पहुँच गया था और उसने वहाँ के निवासियों को सोया हुआ पाया। उसने उस गाड़ी को देखा और उसमें बाघिन तथा बच्चों को पड़ा हुआ देखा। एक जीप और उसमें कुछ लोग आये। गाँव वाले जाग गये और उन्होंने कुछ बातचीत की। बच्चे तथा बाघिन के मृत शरीरों को जीप के पीछे वाले हिस्से में रख दिया गया और वे लोग जीप को ले गये। गाँव वाले अपने-अपने घरों में चले गये। फिर दुबारा से वहाँ शान्ति और अँधेरा हो गया।

बाघ अपने छिपने की जगह से निकल कर बाहर आया। लेकिन गली के कुत्तों ने भौंकना शुरू कर दिया और गाँव वाले दुबारा से जाग गये। बाघ वापस अपने छिपने की जगह पर चला गया। अब सुबह हो रही थी और औरतें कुये पर पानी लेने के लिये आ रही थीं। वह पीछे की ओर हट गया और झाड़ियों के पीछे छिप गया। इस प्रकार से वहाँ उसकी पहली रात गुजरी।

How was the tiger's hunger appeased on the second night? 
दूसरी रात को बाघ की भूख किस प्रकार से शान्त हुई?
Answer:
The tiger had passed his first night near the village in watching the dead bodies of his cubs and the tigress and also in trying to enter the village in the darkness of the night; but the street dogs had started barking. Then he passed the day hidden behind some bushes. Again the evening came. The villagers were returning from their fields. 

They had bundless of firewood on their heads and they were driving their animals home. The tiger came out of the bushes. He lay in wait hidden behind a rock and pounced upon the last animal. He caught it by the throat and made off with it. Thus his hunger was appeased on the second night.

बाघ ने अपनी पहली रात गाँव के पास में बिताई थी। वह अपने बच्चों और बाघिन के मृत शरीरों के देखता रहा और रात के अंधकार में गाँव में घुसने की कोशिश करता रहा; लेकिन कुत्तों ने भौंकना शुरू कर दिया था। फिर उसने किन्हीं झाड़ियों के पीछे छिपकर दिन बिताया। फिर दुबारा से शाम हुई। गाँव वाले अपने खेतों से लौट रहे थे। लकड़ी के गट्ठर उनके सिरों पर रखे हुये थे और वे अपने जानवरों को हॉकते हुये घर ला रहे थे। वह बाघ झाड़ियों से बाहर आया। वह किसी चट्टान के पीछे छिपकर इन्तजार करता हुआ लेट गया और आखिरी जानवर पर झपट्टा मार दिया। उसने उसे गले से पकड़ लिया और उसे लेकर भाग गया। इस प्रकार दूसरी रात को उसने अपनी भूख मिटाई।

How did he become the owner of the whole circus? 
वह उस पूरे सर्कस का मालिक कैसे बन गया?
Answer:
Dadhaji gave captain all his knowledge and skill in the training of animals as well as his business methods. By and by Dadhaji began to depend on Captain more and more. He had become too old to manage things. So he made captain his working partner. After his death, Captain became the owner of the entire circus, with all its property and assets and animals. No one could understand anything because captain had virtually been running the show for years. He only gave reports to Dadhaji from time to time while Dadhaji only rested in his tent.

दादाजी ने अपना सारा ज्ञान और जानवरों के प्रशिक्षण में कार्यकुशलता और साथ में अपने व्यापार के तौर-तरीके भी कैप्टन को दे दिये। धीरे-धीरे करके दादाजी कैप्टन के ऊपर अधिक से अधिक निर्भर रहने लगे। वह इतने बूढ़े हो चुके थे कि वह कार्यों की व्यवस्था नहीं बना सकते थे। इसलिये उन्होंने कैप्टन को अपना कार्य सहभागी बना लिया था। उनकी मृत्यु के बाद कैप्टन उस सारी सम्पत्ति, साजो सामान और जानवरों के साथ उस पूरे सर्कस का मालिक बन गया। कोई भी कुछ भी नहीं समझ पाया क्योंकि कैप्टन वास्तविक रूप से कई वर्षों से शो को चला रहा था। वह दादाजी को केवल समय-समय पर सूचना दिया करता था जबकि दादाजी अपने तम्बू में केवल आराम किया करते थे।

After Dadhaji's death Captain shifted his circus to Malgudi town. He sold the ground at Poona and took a wasteland in Malgudi. He set a signboard naming Grand Malgudi Circus. He assured the chairman and the members of the town that Malgudi will be on the world map. Malgudi would be the home of hundreds of animals, and scores of performers of all kinds and they would be proud of it. He liberally spent money for favours and in a short time Malgudi became famous for its circus while previously it was known for its mountains and river. For all this captain was viewed as the wonder man who had transformed the town.

दादाजी की मृत्यु के बाद कैप्टन ने सर्कस का स्थान बदल कर उसे मालगुड़ी टाउन पहुँचा दिया। उसने पूना की जमीन को बेच दिया और मालगुड़ी में एक बेकार पड़ी जमीन को ले लिया। उसने ग्रान्ड मालगुड़ी सर्कस के नाम वाला एक साइन बोर्ड लगा दिया। उसने नगर अध्यक्ष और सभासदगणों को यह विश्वास दिलाया कि मालगुड़ी विश्व के मानचित्र पर हो जायेगा।

मालगुड़ी सैकड़ों जानवरों और सभी प्रकार के बीसियों कार्यकर्ताओं का घर होगा और उन्हें इस पर गर्व हुआ करेगा। वह अनुकूलता प्राप्त करने के लिये खूब पैसे खर्च किया करता था और थोड़े ही समय में मालगुड़ी अपने सर्कस के लिये प्रसिद्ध हो गया जबकि पहले यह अपने पहाड़ों और नदी के लिये पहिचाना जाता था। इस सबके लिये कैप्टन को अद्भुत व्यक्ति के रूप में देखा जाता था जिसने कि शहर का स्वरूप बदल दिया था।

After talking to the villagers in the collector's office and knowing how to reach their village, captain reached there on the appointed day. Seeing the captain and his men, the villagers were full of excitement. Women and children stood around him. The boys were crying, “The police have come.” Men returned from their fields and recognized him. They brought stools and benches and offered him seats. Some brought him tender coconut and chipped of the top and offered him a drink. Others brought him papaya and banana. The captain felt overwhelmed to find such a good reception.

कलैक्टर के कार्यालय में उन ग्रामीणों से बातचीत करने के बाद और यह जानने के बाद कि उनके गाँव तक कैसे पहुँचा जाये, कैप्टन वहाँ निर्धारित दिन पर पहुँच गया। कैप्टन और उसके लोगों को देखकर गाँव वाले उत्साहमयी प्रसन्नता से भर उठे। स्त्रियाँ और बच्चे उसके चारों ओर खड़े हो गये। लड़के चिल्ला रहे थे, "पुलिस आ गई है।" आदमी लोग अपने खेतों से लौट आये और उन्होंने उसे पहचान लिया। वे स्टूल और बैन् ले आये और उसे बैठने का स्थान दिया। कुछ लोग उसके लिये कोमल सा नारियल ले आये और उसका ऊपरी हिस्सा काट कर अलग किया और उसे पीने के लिये दिया। दूसरे लोग उसके लिये पपीता और केला ले आये। कैप्टन इतने अच्छे स्वागत को देखकर गद्गद हो गया।

Why did the tiger start appreciating captain?
वह बाघ कैप्टन की प्रशंसा क्यों करने लगा?
Answer:
Captain had a vast army of men working for him. He had trapeze artistes, clowns, trainers of monkeys and parrots, horse riders, elephant and camel men. His workers pulled, pushed, unrolled carpets and set up fences, furnitures, and various other properties and changed them quickly for the next item. He provided food for all the animals, he also appeared on stage and did a great deal of off-stage work too, such as checking accounts, making payments, handling his men and so forth. He also thought new turns and tricks for his circus. So the tiger appreciated captain for his energy and power and capability.

कैप्टन का काम करने के लिये उसके पास लोगों की एक विशाल फौज थी। उसके पास हवा में कलाबाजी करते हुये झूलने वाले कलाकार थे, हँसाने वाले मसखरे थे, बन्दरों और तोतों को प्रशिक्षण देने वाले लोग थे, घुड़सवार थे, हाथी और ऊँटों की देखभाल करने वाले लोग थे। उसके कार्यकर्ता लोग दरियों को खींचते थे, सरकाते थे, बिछाते थे, चारों ओर की बाड़ लगाते थे, फर्नीचर लगाते थे, और विभिन्न प्रकार की दूसरी वस्तुओं को व्यवस्थित करते थे और अगली प्रस्तुति के लिये उन्हें फुर्ती से बदल देते थे। वह सभी जानवरों के लिये भोजन का इन्तजाम करता था, वह स्टेज पर भी आता था और स्टेज से अलग हटकर भी बहुत काम करता था, जैसे खातों की जाँच करता था, वेतन बनाता था, अपने लोगों को नियंत्रित करता था और इसी प्रकार के और काम करता था। वह सर्कस के लिये नये-नये करतब भी सोचता था। इसलिए बाघ ने कैप्टन की ऊर्जा एवं शक्ति और उसकी क्षमता के लिये उसकी प्रशंसा की।

How did the tiger break the goat's head at Jubilee show? 
जुबली शो के समय बाघ ने बकरी के सिर को किस प्रकार से तोड़ डाला?
Answer:
The tiger was given full training. At the Jubilee show the tiger was made to sit before a goat. The goat was allowed to sip the milk first. Captain was very watchful. As the goat bent down and stretched its neck to reach the milk, the tiger felt a sudden desire to catch the neck of the goat and eat it. The agony of self control was worse than the raging hunger.

Holding himself back seemed impossible. Captain was more alert than ever. Suddenly captain had to divert his attention to the auditorium where he heard some noise. The tiger took benefit of this moment. He went forward and nipped off the goat's head. Captain whipped him and he was driven to the cage.

बाघ को पूरा प्रशिक्षण दे दिया गया था। जुबली शो में बाघ को बकरी के सामने बिठाया गया था। बकरी को पहले दूध पीने की आज्ञा मिली। कैप्टन बहुत ध्यान दिये हुए था। जैसे ही बकरी नीचे झुकी और दूध तक पहुँचने के लिये उसने अपनी गर्दन पसारी, वैसे ही बाघ को अचानक से बकरी की गर्दन को पकड़ने और उसे खाने की इच्छा हुई।

आत्मनियन्त्रण की व्यथा बढ़ती हुई भूख से कहीं अधिक बुरी होती है। अपने आपको रोके रखना असम्भव प्रतीत हो रहा था। कैप्टन पहले की अपेक्षा अधिक सतर्क था। अचानक ही कैप्टन को अपना ध्यान दर्शक दीर्घा की ओर करना पड़ा जहाँ उसने कुछ शोर सुना। बाघ ने इस पल का फयदा उठाया। वह आगे बढ़ा और बकरी के सिर को अलग कर दिया। कैप्टन ने उसको कोड़े लगाये और उसे पिंजड़े में ले जाया गया।

How was Jaggu given rehearsal and what was Raja's role? 
जग्गू को क्या रिहर्सल दी गई और राजा की क्या भूमिका थी?
Answer:
Jaggu was in full make up. The film director told him to go up to a hut walking naturally and stand there with his back to the camera. The director ordered him not to turn until he heard a cry ‘Tiger, Tiger!? On hearing these words he would speak very loudly and spin round, raise his arms and spring forward with a war cry. He would demolish the tiger and walk back. But that idiot made funny mistakes many times. Raja's role was to stand up on his hind legs and place his forelegs on the shoulders of Jaggu. Then the giant would knock him off. Thus Jaggu's rehearsal was going on.

जग्गू पूरे मेक अप में था। फिल्म निदेशक ने उससे कहा था कि वह एक झोंपड़ी तक स्वाभाविक रूप से चलता हुआ जाये और कैमरे की ओर पीठ करके वह वहाँ खड़ा हो जाये। निदेशक ने उसे यह आदेश दिया था कि जब तक वह 'बाघ, बाघ!' ऐसी चिल्लाने की आवाज को न सुन ले तब तक वह मुड़े नहीं। इन शब्दों को सुनने पर वह बहुत जोर से बोलेगा और चक्कर लगाता हुआ मुड़ेगा, अपने हाथ ऊपर की ओर उठायेगा और युद्ध में चिल्लाने की आवाज के साथ आगे की ओर झपटेगा। वह बाघ को गिराकर चकनाचूर कर देगा और वापस चला आयेगा। लेकिन वह मूर्ख कई बार हँसी दिलाने वाली गलतियाँ करता रहा। राजा की भूमिका यह थी कि वह अपने पिछले पैरों पर खड़ा होगा और आगे के पैर जग्गू के कंधों पर रखेगा। फिर वह दैत्य जैसा मनुष्य उसे पछाड़ कर गिरा देगा। इस प्रकार से जग्गू की रिहर्सल चल रही थी।

What was the condition of Jaggu on seeing the tiger? 
बाघ को देखने पर जग्गू की क्या हालत हुई?
Answer:
Jaggu saw a man with a whip in one hand and a chair in the other. He was commanding, “Raja, come out”. A tiger jumped out of his cage. “Race round”, commanded the man. The tiger ran around. Jaggu stood petrified. He could not believe his eyes. At one point the tiger lunged forward with a roar in Jaggu's direction. Jaggu let out a howl, Amma! Save me!” and blindly smashed his way out. The captain could not help laughing at the huge character running away in panic, shouting for his mother's help. He said, “that fellow did not even notice that he was in a different enclosure from the tiger."

जग्गू ने एक आदमी को एक हाथ में कोड़ा और दूसरे हाथ में एक कुर्सी लिये हुये देखा । वह आदेश दे रहा था, "राजा, बाहर निकलो।" एक बाघ अपने पिंजड़े से कूद कर बाहर आया। उस आदमी ने आदेश दिया, "चारों ओर दौड़ो।" बाघ चारों ओर दौड़ा। जग्गू भयभीत हुआ खड़ा था। उसे अपनी आँखों पर विश्वास नहीं हो रहा था। एक बार वह बाघ जग्गू की दिशा की ओर गरजता हुआ आगे की ओर झपट । जग्गू की चीख निकल गई,"अम्मा, मुझे बचाओ!" और वह आँखें मूंदकर तेजी से एक ओर भाग गया। उस विशाल.आकृति वाले पात्र को सहायता के लिये अपनी माँ को पुकारते हुये और डर के मारे भागते हुये देखकर कैप्टन से हँसे बिना न रहा गया। उसने कहा, "इस आदमी ने यह भी नहीं देखा कि वह बाघ से अलग एक दूसरे बाड़े में है।"

Question 36. 
How did the tiger follow the hermit and his directions? 
बाघ ने किस प्रकार से उस साधु और उसके निर्देशों का अनुगमन किया?
Answer:
The hermit entered the headmaster's room where the tiger was lying. He subdued before the devine presence of the hermit. The hermit said to the tiger that it was not safe for him to go out alone. He would take him out. They together would go out. It would be safer. He must remember that human beings would get into panic when they saw the tiger. 

But he must not look at them. He must keep his head bowed and eyes down and make no sort of sound, whatever might be the reaction of the people. They are likely to get excited, but he must notice nothing. He opened the door and asked the tiger to keep close to him. Thus the tiger followed the hermit and his instructions. They passed through the town and many villages on the way. The tiger did not look at anything except the path.

साधु ने हैडमास्टर के कमरे में प्रवेश किया जहाँ बाघ लेटा हुआ था। वह उस साधु की दैवीय उपस्थिति के सामने शान्त और सामान्य हो गया था। साधु ने बाघ से कहा कि उसके लिये अकेले बाहर निकलना सुरक्षित नहीं है। वह उसे बाहर ले चलेगा। वे साथ-साथ मिलकर बाहर चलेंगे। यह अधिक सुरक्षित रहेगा। उसे यह याद रखना चाहिये कि लोग जब बाघ को देखेंगे तो वे भयभीत हो जायेंगे। लेकिन उसे उन लोगों की ओर नहीं देखना है।

उसे अपना सिर झुकाये हुये रखना होगा और अपनी निगाहें नीचे रखनी होंगी और लोगों की चाहे जो कुछ भी प्रतिक्रिया हो, उसे किसी भी प्रकार की आवाज नहीं निकालनी होगी। बहुत सम्भव है कि लोग उत्तेजना में हों, पर उसे कुछ भी नहीं देखना होगा। उसने दरवाजा खोला और बाघ से कहा कि मेरे बिलकुल पास ही रहना। इस प्रकार से बाघ उस साधु के पीछे-पीछे चल दिया और उसके निर्देशों का पालन किया। वे उस शहर से होकर और रास्ते में बहुत से गाँवों से होकर निकले। बाघ ने अपने रास्ते के अलावा और किसी पर भी ध्यान नहीं दिया।

Question 37. 
What was the daily routine of the tiger in the forest when he was in the company of the hermit?
जब वह बाघ उस साधु की संगति में जंगल में था तो उसका दैनिक कार्यक्रम क्या रहता था?
Answer:
All day along the tiger lay across the entrance of his shelter while the hermit sat with his eyes shut in prayer. In the evening he would open his eyes and then told the tiger many things about life, existence and death. 

Thus the tiger felt his understanding to be increasing. He mentioned the word God many times. Now-a-days the keenness of his hunger was also gone. He slipped away into the jungle only when he felt that he was very hungry. He killed only the littlest game which was just sufficient enough to satisfy his hunger of the moment. He suffered hunger for mean days, but he felt nobler for it.

पूरे दिन बाघ शरण स्थल के प्रवेश द्वार पर फैलकर लेटा हुआ था जबकि साधु अपनी आँखों को बन्द करे प्रार्थना में बैठा हुआ था। सायं को साधु ने अपनी आँखें खोली और बाघ से उसने जीवन के बारे में बहुत सी बातें बताईं जिसमें अस्तित्व और मृत्यु का विषय भी था। इस प्रकार बाघ ने अपनी समझदारी में वृद्धि अनुभव की। उसने भगवान शब्द का वर्णन कई बार किया। आजकल उसकी भूख की इच्छा भी समाप्त हो गई थी। वह जंगल में तभी दूर निकलता था जब उसे अत्यधिक भूख लगती थी। वह छोटे से छोटे शिकार मारकर तभी खाता था जिस क्षण उसे भूख लगती थी। उसने बहुत दिनों तक भूख से पीड़ा सहा परन्तु वह परोपकारी होना अनुभव करता था।

Question 38. 
What conception could the tiger attain of God when the hermit told him something of God?
जब साधु ने उसे भगवान के बारे में कुछ बताया तब बाघ भगवान के बारे में क्या धारणा प्राप्त कर पाया?
Answer:
The hermit described god in his own terms. he said that God is the creator of everything. He is the great spirit pervading every creature, every rock and tree and the sky and the stars. He is the source of power. 

Later when the hermit asked the tiger about God, he said that God must be an enormous tiger. He is spanning the earth and the sky. His tail is capable of encircling the earth. His claws could hook on the clouds and teeth could grind the mountains and he possesses the immeasurable strength. On hearing this conception of God, the hermit laughed and said that every creature sees God in his own image.

साधु ने अपने तरीके से भगवान का वर्णन किया। उन्होंने कहा कि भगवान प्रत्येक वस्तु को बनाने वाला होता है। वह एक महान आत्मा है जो सभी प्राणियों, चट्टानों, वृक्षों, आकाश और तारों में व्याप्त है। वह शक्ति का स्रोत है। बाद में जब उस साधु ने बाघ से भगवान के बारे में पूछा तो उसने कहा कि भगवान अवश्य ही एक बहुत बड़ा बाघ होगा। वह पृथ्वी और आकाश तक फैला हुआ है। उसकी पूँछ पूरी पृथ्वी को घेर लेने में समर्थ है। उसके पंजे बादलों में जाकर लगते हैं और उसके दाँत पर्वतों को भी चबा सकते हैं और वह इतनी ताकत रखता है कि उसे मापा नहीं जा सकता है। भगवान की ऐसी धारणा सुनकर, वह साधु हँसा और बोला कि प्रत्येक प्राणी भगवान को अपने स्वरूप में देखता है।

Question 39.
“If you brood on your improvements rather than your shortcomings, you will be happier.” Who said this and why?
"यदि आप अपने दोषों की अपेक्षा अपने में हुये विकास पर अधिक चिन्तन करेंगे तो आपको अधिक खुशी प्राप्त होगी।" यह किसने कहा और क्यों कहा?
Answer:
The tiger felt that he had atained some merit through penance. He wished that he could learn the art of living on sugarcane and rice. He also wished that he could have shed the frightening physical appearance God had given him. If he could have lived on air or dry leaves, he would have felt more blessed. When the hermit saw this turmoil in the tiger, he advised not to crave for unattainable. He further said that all growth takes place in its own time. Finally he said, “If you brood on your improvements rather than your shortcomings, you will be happier."

बाघ को ऐसा महसूस होता था कि तपस्या के द्वारा उसने कुछ अच्छे गुणों को प्राप्त कर लिया है। उसकी यह इच्छा होती थी कि वह गन्ने और चावलों को खाकर जीवित रहने की कला को सीख सकता। उसकी यह भी इच्छा होती थी कि भगवान ने जो उसे डरावना शारीरिक स्वरूप दिया है काश! वह उसे अपने से दूर कर पाता। यदि वह हवा और सूखी पत्तियों को खाकर जीवित रह पाता तो उसे लगता कि वह कहीं अधिक धन्य हो गया है। जब उस साधु ने बाघ के अन्दर की ऐसी व्याकुलता को देखा तो उसने यह सलाह दी कि जो अप्राप्य है उसके लिये उसमें चाहत नहीं होनी चाहिये। उसने और आगे भी कहा कि सभी प्रकार का विकास अपने समय के आने पर ही होता है। अन्त में उन्होंने कहा, "यदि आप अपने दोषों की अपेक्षा, अपने में हुये विकास पर अधिक चिन्तन करेंगे तो आपको खुशी प्राप्त होगी।" ।

Question 40. 
What did the hermit tell the tiger about how he became a hermit? 
उस साधु ने बाघ को क्या बताया कि वह एक साधु कैसे बन गया?
Answer:
The hermit told the tiger that he was an ordinary man of the world. He remained busy and active. He did all the works by the clock. He remained greeting and smiling at all because he wanted to become a respectable man in the society. One day it seemed to him the all such activities were wrong and senseless.

His head was always crowded with plannings and counting time or money. So he abondened everything and left his family. At mid-nignt he moved away on the sands of the Sarayu. People searched for him but gave up concluding that he was washed off in the Saraya. Then he wandered through jungles and mountains. He became completely unknown and so a hermit.

साधु ने बाघ को बताया कि वह एक सामान्य सांसारिक आदमी था। वह अपने काम में व्यस्त और सक्रिय रहता था। वह सारा काम समय के हिसाब से करता था। वह सभी के लिये अभिवादन करता रहता था और मुस्कराता रहता था क्योंकि वह समाज में एक सम्माननीय व्यक्ति बनना चाहता था। एक दिन उसे ऐसा लगा कि ये सारे क्रियाकलाप गलत हैं और बेकार हैं । उसका मस्तिष्क योजनाओं से तथा समय और धन की गणनाओं से हमेशा भरा पड़ा रहता था।

इसलिये उसने हर चीज का परित्याग कर दिया और अपने परिवार को भी छोड़ दिया। एक दिन आधी रात के समय वह सरयू नदी की बालू पर चला गया। लोगों ने उसे तलाश किया लेकिन यह नतीजा निकालते हुये उन्होंने तलाश बन्द कर दी कि वह नदी में बह गया होगा। इसके बाद वह जंगलों और पहाड़ों में घूमता रहा। वह पूरे तरीके से अपरिचित हो गया और एक साधु हो गया।

What signs of old age were seen on the tiger? 
उस बाघ के ऊपर वृद्धावस्था के कौन-कौन से लक्षण दिखाई देने लगे?
Answer:
The normal life was going on. The hermit meditated and discoursed to the tiger in the evenings seated on his slab of stone. Thus life went on and many days passed.Now the tiger realized that he did not like to get up or move. He liked to lie down long hours hidden behind the shrub. He preferred to go without food. He could not run fast to catch any thing.

His claws sometimes did not work and most of his teeth had fallen. It had become difficult for him to tear or chew. His movements were becoming slow. He could not kill his prey successfully and took a long time to consume it. His skin had fallen in folds and his hearing was also impaired. These were the signs of his old age.

सामान्य जीवन चल रहा था। वह साधु ध्यान लगाये रहता था और शाम के समय अपने पत्थर की चट्टान पर बैठकर बाघ से बातचीत करता था। इस प्रकार से जीवन चलता गया और बहुत दिन बीत गये। अब वह बाघ ऐसा महसूस करता था कि उसे खड़े होना या घूमना-फिरना पसन्द नहीं है। वह झाड़ी में छिपा हआ काफी लम्बे समय तक पड़े रहना पसन्द करता था। उसे बिना खाना खाये ही अधिक पसन्द था ।

वह किसी को भी पकड़ने के लिये तेजी से दौड़ नहीं सकता था। कभी-कभी उसके पंजे काम नहीं करते थे और उसके ज्यादातर दाँत गिर चुके थे। उसके लिये चीरना-फाड़ना या चबाना कठिन हो गया था। उसकी गतिविधियाँ धीमी पड़ती जा रही थीं। वह अपने शिकार को सफलतापूर्वक नहीं मार पाता था और उसको खाकर समाप्त करने में भी काफी लम्बा समय लगता था। उसकी खाल परतों में झूल गई थी और उसे सुनाई देना भी कम हो गया था। ये सब उसकी वृद्धावस्था के लक्षण थे।

Question 42. 
What solution did the hermit give for passing his last days of old age? 
अपनी वृद्धावस्था के अन्तिम दिनों को गुजारने के लिये उस साधु ने क्या समाधान दिया?
Answer:
The hermit told the tiger that he was becoming old. Some five years of his life were left. It would not be proper to suffer starvation or attack from other creatures or hunters in the old age. The hermit further said that the time for attaining his samadhi was near. He would not like to leave him alone. He said that a man would come to take his charge. 

He was the head of a zoo in the town, so the tiger would spend the rest of his time in the zoo. He would be safe in a cage. He would be given food and they would open the door of the cage so that he might freely move about in an open air enclosure and they would look after him. The hermit gave this solution for the old age of the tiger.

उस साधु ने बाघ से कहा कि वह बूढ़ा होता जा रहा है। उसके जीवन के कोई पाँच वर्ष और बचे हुये हैं। यह उचित नहीं होगा कि इस वृद्धावस्था में भूख से पीड़ित रहा जाये अथवा दूसरे प्राणियों या शिकारियों के हमले से कष्ट उठाया जाये। साधु ने और आगे कहा कि उसकी समाधि लेने का समय भी पास आ गया है। वह उसे अकेले छोड़ जाना पसन्द नहीं करेगा। उसने कहा कि उसकी जिम्मेदारी को लेने के लिये एक आदमी आयेगा।

वह शहर में किसी चिड़ियाघर का मुखिया है। इसलिये बाघ अपना बचा हुआ समय चिड़ियाघर में बितायेगा। वह एक पिंजड़े में सुरक्षित रहेगा। उसे भोजन दिया जायेगा और वे लोग उस पिंजड़े का दरवाजा भी खोला करेंगे जिससे कि वह एक खुली हवा वाले बाड़े में स्वतन्त्र रूप से इधर-उधर घूम सके और वे लोग उसकी देखभाल करेंगे। उस साधु ने बाघ की वृद्धावस्था के लिये यह समाधान दिया।
