  • Right to be Informed: This includes quality, quantity, potency, purity, standard and price of goods.
  • Right to Choose: Assurance of access to variety of goods and services at competitive price.
  • Right of Safety: The consumers have the right to be protected against marketing of goods and services, which are hazardous to life and property.

Explain the right to be informed and why is it important for consumers ?
Answer:
Consumers has been provided many rights under which the most important is the right to be informed. When a consumer purchases a commodity, all information regarding the product, its ingredients, date of manufacture, precaution of use etc. are printed on the packing of product because the consumer has right to be informed. If there is any complaint about the product or service, the consumer can claim for compensation or demand for change of a product. For example, if a shopkeeper is selling the medicine after expiry date, consumer can complain against for the same.

At present government has increased its area. In 2005 government of India passed a law, which is known as “Right to Information" (RTI). By this act, the right to information has been expanded to cover various services provided by the Government. The RTI act ensures India's citizens all the information about the functions of government departments.

Factors Responsible for Consumer's Exploitation:

  • Consumers are quite ignorant of their rights and duties.
  • Consumers illiteracy, less information and casual behaviour are most important factors which lead to consumers' exploitation.
  • Markets do not work in a fair manner when producers are few and powerful whereas consumers purchase in small amounts and they are scattered
  • Consumers usually lack of knowledge to judge different kinds of things. It is easy to cheat poor, illiterate and unaware consumers.

Measures to save consumers from Exploitation:

  • Consumers should be informed about their rights.
