Re-read the introduction to this chapter. Why do you think retaliation is not the proper response to this problem? What would happen if different groups followed this path?
Answer:
In the role of this chapter, the question has been raised how to eliminate any kind of domination related to religion? If the majority in the country discriminates against and persecutes the minorities, then what would be done to stop it? In the introduction of this chapter, two ways have been shown for this, firstly, all the group should follow the path of retaliation, and second, while choosing the path to struggle, raise the voice stating that no one should be discriminated against on grounds of their religious practices and beliefs. In this, the second way is correct because it ultimately leads to world peace. The first way in which there is a talk of revenge, if all religious groups adopt it, then it will end the mutual cooperation and brotherhood between different communities and violence will increase and there will be danger of world war.

Discuss in class: Can there be different views within the same religion? 
Answer:
Different views are followed even within the same religion. Some examples are :

1. In the Hindu religion, several deities are worshipped by different people.
2. In the Muslim religion, there are Shiyas and Sunnis.
3. In Jain religion, there are Shwetambars and Digambars.

Answer:
The Constitution of India has the provision to celebrate festivals in their own way and the government policy is that the state should respect all religions equally. So, government schools don’t celebrate any religious festival on the school premises.

Government schools often have students from different religious backgrounds. Re-read the three objectives of a secular state and write two sentences on why it is important that government schools do not promote any one religion?
Answer:
The three objectives of a secular state are- 
1. that one religious community does not dominate another;

2. that some members do not dominate other members of the same religious community;

3. that the State does not enforce any particular religion nor take away the religious freedom of individuals. Government schools should not promote any one religion because India is a secular state. It views all religions equally and keeps itself away from religion.

Question 1. 
Can you think of a recent incident, from any part of India, in which the secular ideals of the Constitution were violated and persons were persecuted and killed because of their religious backgrounds?
Answer:
The burning train incident in 2002 at Godhara city in Gujarat state. Which caused the deaths of Hindu pilgrims carsevaks returning from Ayodhya. The Hindus blamed the Muslim community for this and a massive riot took place in Gujarat. Hindus decided to take revenge on Muslims and due to this many innocent people from the Muslim community were killed.

 List the different types of religious practice that you find in your neighborhood. This could be different forms of prayer, worship of different gods, sacred sites, different kinds of religious music and singing, etc. Does this indicate freedom of religious practice?
Answer:
(Note: Students make their own list of religious activities prevalent in their neighborhood. These religious activities can be described as prayers, rituals, religious music, and singing, in the form of festivals).
In India, it is clear from seeing various types of prayers, worship of different deities, different holy places, different types of religious music and singing, etc. that there is freedom of religious activities here. All religious people are free to worship in their own way. The state does not interfere with their religious activities and sees all religions equally.

Question 2. 
Will the government intervene if some religious group says that their religion allows them to practice infanticide? Give reasons for your answer.
Answer:
In Indian secularism, the state can intervene in religious affairs. The state maintains a principled distance from the religion. On the basis of ideals and fundamental rights given in the Constitution, the state can interfere in the matter of any religion. If religion permits the practice of infanticide, it violates a person’s right to live. In such a situation, the state can intervene in the matter of religion and take action to stop the practice of infanticide, to prevent the violation of fundamental rights of the constitution and the right to life.
