Question 1. 
Comment on the attitude shown by Taplow towards Crocker Harris.

Answer: 
Attitude shown by Taplow towards Crocker Harris is a mixed one. It has the praises for the teacher's sense of discipline and devotion to duty but it also has some complaint against Mr Crocker Harris. Taplow feels that Mr Crocker Harris is very strict and likes no flattery, but still he is likeable.

All students are fearful of him. He is merciless and assigns extra work to Taplow even on the last day of the session. He is very hard working. He does not tell anything to Taplow about his result but gives a vague answer.

Frank, a young teacher grows jealous of Crocker Harris who is very popular with all students. He likes to hear any kind of blame against Harris. So he encourages Taplow to cut the period of Mr Harris and run away to play golf. He asks Taplow to copy the words of Crocker Harris and enjoys it. Thus, Frank is certainly against Croker Harris and encourages Taplow to criticise the senior teacher but indirectly.

What do you gather about Croker Harris from the play ?

The play tells us that Mr Crocker Harris is a true teacher. He is a man of strict discipline. He is hard working. He is also dutiful. He does not like flattery. He has no feelings and knows no mercy. In spite of all this, he has a wonderful hold on students. He is an ideal teacher.

Seema : Just praise him for not liking flattery and he is sure to be flattered.

Seema : If he were not out spoken, our English teacher would have been the best one.

In the course of conversation, it is comfortably derived that Mr Crocker Harris is a person of certain principles and he is liked by the students. But this fame of Mr Crocker goes beyond digestion to Mr Frank.

Frank is evidently jealous of Mr Crocker. Mr Frank seems to be petty because Frank likes the moment when Taplow imitates Mr Crocker. Frank even asks Taplow to replicate the imitation. Frank does not love science, though he is a science teacher. Apparently, he is found to be dishonest to his profession of teaching. Professionally he seems to be quite immatured and discouraging.

Summary Of The Lesson

The scene is set in a school. Frank is young and Crocker Harris, middle aged person. Both are teachers. Taplow, a young boy of sixteen has come in to do extra work for Crocker Harris who has not yet come to the school and on reaching there, Frank finds Taplow waiting. The school is empty because the next day is the last day of the session. 

On asking, Taplow tells Frank that he has come to do some extra work for Crocker Harris. Taplow also adds that he has still not got his result. When Frank suggests Taplow to read his play 'Aeschylus', he does not agree. Thereafter, Frank suggests Taplow to take a cut instead of waiting but the boy does not agree out of shock and fear. 

At this Frank tells Taplow that he is jealous of Mr Crocker Harris for having such a good influence on the students. Taplow tells Frank that Crocker Harris is not a sadist to take pleasure out of the pain of students. Towards the end of the play, Mrs Crocker Harris enters and asks Taplow to go to the chemist with the prescription she takes out from her basket and bring those medicines.

टैपलो - (एक अत्यन्त धीमी, और फटी हुई-सी आवाज में नकल उतारते हुए) "मेरे प्यारे टैपलो, मैंने तुम्हें उतना ही दिया है जिसके तुम योग्य हो। न तो कम और अधिक भी नहीं।" क्या आप जानते हैं श्रीमान्, मेरा सोचना है कि उन्होंने अतिरिक्त कार्य के लिए मुझे बहुत कम अंक दिये हैं, अधिक नहीं है। मेरा अभिप्राय है- यह मनुष्य एकदम पत्थर दिल है (बोलते हुए अचानक रुक जाता है )। क्षमा करें श्रीमान्, क्या मैं जरूरत से ज्यादा बोल गया?

टैपलो - (दोबारा नकल उतारते हुए) "मेरे प्रिय टैपलो, मैंने तुम्हें उतना ही दिया है जिसके तुम योग्य हो, न तो कम और निश्चित रूप से न अधिक।" । 
तक - (कठोर दिखते हुए) तनिक भी उसके जैसा नहीं। अपना आनन्दप्रद Aeschylus पढ़ो और शान्त हो जाओ। टैपलो (अरुचि के साथ) 
रैंक - देखो, श्री क्रोकर हैरिस ने तुमको किस समय यहाँ आने के लिए कहा था ?

फ्रैंक - अच्छा, वह दस मिनट विलम्ब से हैं। तुम चले क्यों नहीं जाते ? तुम अभी भी तालाबन्दी होने से पूर्व गोल्फ खेल सकतेहो।
टेपलो - (यथार्थ में चौंकते हुए) अरे, नहीं, मैं नहीं जा सकता। भाग जाना क्रोकर से, श्री क्रोकर हैरिस से ?
मैं नहीं समझता जब से वह यहाँ है ऐसा कभी हुआ होगा। ईश्वर जानता है क्या होगा यदि मैं भाग जाऊँ ...... सम्भवतः वह घर तक मेरा पीछा करते हुए जा पहुँचें या कुछ और ......। 
फ्रेंक - मुझे स्वीकार करना पड़ेगा कि मुझे तुम लड़कों के ऊपर उनके इस प्रकार के प्रभाव से ईर्ष्या होती है। तुम सभी उनसे अत्यधिक सहमे हुए दिखते हो। आखिर वे करते क्या हैं-तुम सबको पीटते हैं अथवा कुछ और ? 
टपलो - हे भगवान, नहीं। वह दूसरे एक-दो अध्यापकों की भाँति परपीड़क नहीं हैं। 
फ्रेंक - मतलब ? 
टेपलो - परपीड़क, श्रीमान्, वह होता है जिसको दूसरों को दुःख देने में आनन्द आता है।
वास्तव में ? पर मैं समझता हूँ तुम यह कह रहे थे कि कुछ अन्य अध्यापक ........। टैपलो
वास्तव में, वे ऐसे हैं, श्रीमान्। मैं उनके नामों का उल्लेख नहीं करूँगा, परन्तु आप भी उन्हें उतनी ही अच्छी तरह जानते हैं जितना मैं जानता हूँ। वास्तव में, मैं यह जानता हूँ कि अधिकांश शिक्षक यह सोचते हैं कि हम बच्चे एक भी चीज को समझते नहीं हैं, पर श्रीमान्, आप भिन्न हैं। आप नौजवान हैं- अच्छा, तुलनात्मक रूप से, किसी भी तरह तथा आप विज्ञान के आदमी हैं। आपको यह जरूर मालूम होगा कि परपीड़क होना (सैडिज्म) क्या होता है।

भयभीत करने वाले न होते - क्योंकि इससे कम से कम इतना तो पता चलता है उनमें कुछ भावनाएँ हैं लेकिन उनमें कोई भावना नहीं। वे अन्दर से पूरी तरह अखरोट की भाँति सिकुड़े हुए हैं और वह उन लोगों से घृणा करते हुए प्रतीत होते हैं जो उनके प्रति लगाव दर्शायें अर्थात ऐसा लगता है कि वह यह नापसंद करते हैं कि लोग उन्हें पसंद करें। यह मजेदार है। मैं किसी और ऐसे अध्यापक को नहीं जानता जो यह पसन्द न करता हो कि लोग उनको पसन्द करें।
 फेक - और मैं किसी ऐसे लड़के को नहीं जानता जो इस बात को अपने उद्देश्यों के लिए प्रयोग न करता हो। 
टैपलो - अच्छा, यह स्वाभाविक है श्रीमान्। परन्तु क्रोकर के साथ नहीं
फ्रैंक - श्री क्रोकर हैरिस। 
टैपलो - श्री क्रोकर हैरिस। मजेदार चीज यह है कि इन सभी चीजों के बावजूद मैं उनको पसन्द करता हूँ। मैं ऐसा किये बिना रह ही नहीं सकता। और कभी-कभी मुझे यह लगता है कि वे भी इस बात को समझते हैं और यह देखना उनको और भी अधिक संकुचित कर देता है अर्थात अकड़ या ऐंठ जाते हैं। 
फेक - मुझे पूर्ण विश्वास है कि तुम बढ़ा-चढ़ाकर कह रहे हो। 
टैपलो - नहीं, श्रीमान् ऐसा नहीं है। एक दिन उन्होंने अपना पुराना चुटकुला सुनाया। वास्तव में कोई नहीं हँसा, क्योंकि कोई भी उसे समझ नहीं पाया, जिनमें मैं भी शामिल था। फिर भी मैं यह जरूर जानता था कि परिहास (हास्य) सुनाने में उनका अभिप्राय हँसाने का था। इसलिए एक सामान्य विनम्रता और शिष्टाचार से और उनके प्रति थोड़ी सुहानुभूति की भावना से कि उन्होंने एक बेकार चुटकला सुनाया, मैं हँस गया। परन्तु अब मुझे यह याद नहीं है कि वह चुटकला क्या था, कल्पना करो कि मैं आपको चुटकला सुनाता हूँ। अब आप हँसिए, श्रीमान् (फ्रेंक हँसता है)। 
टैपलो- (एक धीमी, फटी-सी आवाज में।) 
टैपलो-मेरे छोटे से चुटकुले पर तुम हँसे, मैंने यह देखा। मुझे यह स्वीकार करना चाहिए कि मैं उस प्रगति से खुश हूँ जो तुम्हारी लैटिन भाषा में हुई है, क्योंकि तुम इतने शीघ्र समझ गये पर बाकी कक्षा नहीं समझी। अब बेहतर होगा कि तुम यह चुटकुला दूसरों को भी समझा दो ताकि तुम्हारी तरह ये भी उसका आनंद ले सकें। 

5. The door up right is ......... door up right. (Pages 54-55)

हिन्दी अनुवाद - दायीं ओर का दरवाजा धक्के से खुलता है और मिली क्रोकर हैरिस प्रवेश करती है। वह 35 से 40 के बीच की एक दुबली-पतली महिला है बल्कि आमतौर पर स्कूल अध्यापकों की पत्नियों द्वारा पहने जाने वाले वस्त्रों से कुछ अधिक ही सुन्दर रूप से वस्त्र पहने हुए है। वह एक कोट पहने हुए है तथा एक खरीददारी करने की टोकरी लिए है। वह दरवाजा बन्द करती है और फिर पर्दे के समीप टैपलो तथा फ्रैंक को देखते हुए खड़ी हो जाती है। उनको उसकी उपस्थिति का पता कुछ सैकिण्ड के पश्चात् चलता है।। 
फ्रैंक -टैपलो चलो, शुरु हो जाओ (धीरे-धीरे डेस्क की ओर जाते हुए) इतने स्वार्थी न बनो कि एक अच्छे चुटकले को स्वयं तक ही सीमित रखो। दूसरों को भी बताओ.....(अकस्मात् वह मिली को देखकर रुक जाता है) हे भगवान! फ्रैंक तेजी से मुड़ता है और मिली को देखकर अत्यधिक राहत महसूस करता है। 
फ्रैंक - आह, हलो। 
मिली - (बिना अभिव्यक्ति (भावों) के) हलो। वह साइडबोर्ड के समीप आती है और उस पर अपनी टोकरी रख देती है। 
टैपलो - (फ्रैंक के बायीं ओर जाते हुए, पागलों की तरह फुसफुसाते हुए) क्या आप समझते हैं कि उसने सब कुछ सुन लिया ? 
फ्रैंक - (सांत्वना देते हुए अपना सिर हिलाता है, मिली अपना चोगा उतारती है और हॉल स्टैण्ड के ऊपर टाँग देती है) मैं समझता हूँ उसने सब सुन लिया। वह वहाँ पर काफी देर से खड़ी थी। 
टैपलो - यदि उन्होंने सुन लिया और उन्होंने उनको बता दिया तो मेरा परिणाम गया। 
फ्रैंक – बकवास (वह अंगीठी की ओर जाता है) मिली साइडबोर्ड से टोकरी उठाती है, मेज की ओर आती है तथा टोकरी उसके ऊपर रख देती है। मिली - (टैपलो से) मेरे पति का इन्तजार कर रहे हो ? 
टैपलो - (मेज के बायीं ओर जाते हुए) अरे-हाँ।

मिली – वे स्कूल के कोष प्रभारी के यहाँ हैं और कुछ देर वहीं रह सकते हैं। यदि मैं तुम्हारी जगह होती, तो
चली जाती। टैपलो - (सन्देहास्पद रूप से) उन्होंने खासतौर पर कहा था कि मुझे आना था। 
मिली - अच्छा, तुम पन्द्रह मिनट के लिए भागकर वापस क्यों नहीं आ जाते ? (वह टोकरी में से कुछ चीजें खोलती है)। 
टैपलो - मान लो वे मेरे वापस आने से पूर्व आ जाते हैं ? 
मिली - (मुस्कुराते हुए) पूरा दोष मैं अपने ऊपर ले लूँगी। (वह टोकरी में से एक पर्चा निकालती है।) मैं तुम्हें
बताती हूँ- तुम उनके लिए एक कार्य कर सकते हो। इस पर्चा को केमिस्ट के पास ले जाओ और इसकी व्यवस्था करो। 
टैपलो – ठीक है, श्रीमती क्रोकर हैरिस (वह सीधा दरवाजे की ओर चला जाता है)।
