→ The policies of British affected kings. queens, peasants, landlords, tribals, soldiers, all in different ways. 

→ From the middle of the eighteenth century, nawabs and rajas gradually lost their authority arid honour.

→ The peasants and zamindars were troubled by the high taxes and the sepoys were unhappy about their pay, allowances and conditions of service. The public was upset with the reforms being undertaken by the British.

→ In the above circumstances, a revolt started in May 1857, against the rule of the company. Beginning from Meerut the rebellion soon spread to Delhi, Kanpur, Lucknow, Bareilly, Faizabad, Jhansi and other places.

→ The rebels declared Bahadur Shah Zafar as their leader.

→ The British were defeated on many fronts while fighting the rebel troops. But the Company decided to repress the revolt and brought reinforcement from England.

→ In September 1857, the British recaptured Delhi again. Bahadur Shah Zafar was sentenced to life imprisonment and sent to prison in Rangoon.

→ By the end of 1859, the British had completely taken control of the country. But aller this rebellion, they made many changes in their policies.
