Answer:
The major landforms of the earth are mountains, plateaus and plains.

(b) What is the difference between a mountain and a plataeu?
Answer: 
The differences between a mountain and a plateau are:

A plateau is a flat highland area, rising abruptly above the surroundings.

Answer: 
Mountains are very useful to man in a variety of ways :

  1. They are storehouse of water.
  2. Glaciers in the mountains are source for many rivers.
  3. Water from the mountains is used for irrigation, generation of hydroelectricity and as a reservoir.
  4. Terrace farming can be done on the steep slopes.
  5. They have a rich variety of flora and fauna.
  6. Forests are source of fuel, fodder, gum, resins, lac etc.
  7. Mountains provide ideal sites for tourists and snow sports.

(e) How are plains formed?
Answer: 
Plains are generally formed by rivers and their tributaries. The rivers flow down the slopes of mountains and erode them. They carry forward the eroded material. When they reach the valley areas, they deposit the load consisting of stones, sand and silt carried by them. This deposition of the eroded material makes the-plains.

(f) Why are the river plains thickly populated?
Answer: 
The river plains are very suitable for human habitation. People get levelled land for various activities. They are most suitable for construction of roads and railways networks. As the soil is fertile in plains, they are very suitable for agriculture and are highly productive areas. Hence, river plains are densely populated areas.

(g) Why are mountains thinly populated?
Answer: 
Life is very difficult in mountain areas because of harsh climate and rugged topography. As the climate is very cold, it is very unsuitable for various human activities like farming, mining, etc. It is quite difficult to build houses or roads on a mountain. Hence, people do not prefer to live here.
