Small farmers borrow money from large farmers, landowners and money lenders for agricultural activities and to fulfill different needs. These small farmers are caught in debt trap due to following reasons:

  1. Higher rate of interest on tough terms and conditions.
  2. Crop failure due to various reasons.
  3. Hence sometimes farmers are unable to repay the loan so to repay the loan farmers have to sell major part of production to moneylenders on lower prices than the market. Therefore, it causes distress among farmers.
  4. Lack of availability of water for irrigation. The high-yielding variety of seeds, chemical fertilizers, insecticides, pesticides, etc. are very expensive, the farmers find it difficult to purchase them.

Write a note on ‘a fisherman’s family in a village.
Answer: 
Generally, fishing villages are found near the coastal areas. Here, people earn their livelihood by fishing. Near the house, rows of catamarans can be seen. They sold fishes in the market. Every year during the monsoon season fishermen do not catch fishes as it is the breeding time of fishes. Small fishermen have to depend only on the fishing for their livelihood. In this occupation also, there are small and big fishermen; big fishermen can afford equipment while small fishermen cannot. During lean months, fishermen have to take loan from the traders for their livelihood.
