Paheli did wonder as to what could be useful garbage? Why was it thrown away in the first place? Is there some garbage that is not actually garbage?
Answer:
Useful garbage is the garbage that can easily be decayed and converted into manure in the soil which can be utilized to fertilize the crops. It is thrown away in the first place so that it can be used to make compost. Yes, some garbage can be converted into manure to replenish soil.

(a) Which kind of garbage is not converted into compost by the redworms?
(b) Have you seen any other organism besides redworms in your pit? If yes, then try to find out their names and draw pictures of them.
Answer:
(a) Non - biodegradable garbage like broken glass, plasticsware, aluminium wrappers, broken toys, etc. cannot be converted into compost by redworms.
(b) Yes, maggots, spiders, small bugs, flies, cockroaches and small insects, etc. can be seen in the pit. Compost is also rich in microbes which cannot be seen without microscopes.

(a) Is garbage disposal the responsibility only of the government?
(b) Is it possible to reduce the problems relating to disposal of garbage?
Answer:
(a) No, garbage disposal is not only the responsibility of the government. Along with government and local municipals corporations, it is also the duty of every citizen to help in garbage disposal. Each of us should reduce the waste so as to save the environment.
(b) Yes, it is possible to reduce problems related to disposal of garbage by following steps:

  1. Encourage your family, friends and others to follow proper disposal practices.
  2. Kitchen waste that includes fruit and vegetables peels, waste food, tea leaves, etc. can be used to make manure.
  3. We should insist shopkeepers to use paper bags. We should carry a cloth or a jute bag when going out for shopping.
  4. We should save paper by using both the sides of a paper.
  5. We should use separate bins for biodegradable and non - biodegradable substances.

 
Question 3. 
(a) What do you do with the leftover food at home?
(b) If you and your friends are given the choice of eating in a plastic plate or a banana leaf platter at a party which one would you prefer and why? 
Answer:
(a) We collect leftover food and use it to make compost. Compost provides nutrients for the growth of plants.
(b) We would prefer to eat food in a banana leaf platter. As leaf can easily be decomposed whereas plastic plates takes years to decompose or not even decompose at all. They are harmful for environment so, we should minimise their use.

Question 4. 
(a) Collect pieces of different kinds of paper. Find out which of these can be recycled.
(b) With the help of a lens, look at the pieces of paper you collected for the above question. Do you see any difference in the material of recycled paper and a new sheet of paper?
Answer:
(a) All type of papers can be recycled except paper with plastic coating.
(b) Recycled paper looks yellowish, rough and thicker as compared to new sheet of paper.

(a) Collect different kinds of packaging material. What was the purpose for which each one was used? Discuss in groups.
(b) Give an example in which packaging could have been reduced.
(c) Write a story on, how packaging increases the amount of garbage?
Answer:
(a) Different kinds of packaging materials and their uses are:

  1.  Paper packaging material: It is used to make shoe boxes, machine box, packing soap, chocolates, etc.
  2. Thermocole: It is used to cover glass - wares.
  3. Plastic bags: It is used to carry the liquid items like - oil, shampoo. It is also used as toy covers, saree bags.
  4. Cloth bags and jute bags: It is used as school bags, shopping bags, vegetables, bags, etc.
  5. Card board: 

(a) Crockery and delicate items.    
(b) If we start carrying our own cloth or jute bag to buy fruits, vegetables then there will be no need to pack them using plastic and it will drastically reduce the plastic waste.
(c) The packaging is used to prevent the attack of microorganisms and to maintain the freshness of the food. Once the product is open, all packaging material goes waste and is thrown into dustbin. Many packaging material are non - biodegradable and cannot be recycled so cause serious hazard to the environment.

Question 6. 
Do you think it is better to use compost instead of chemical fertilisers? Why?
Answer:
Yes, it is better to use compost instead of chemical fertilisers because compost is:

  1. Environment friendly.
  2. It adds natural fertility to soil.
  3. It is cheaper than fertilisers as it is prepared from organic waste materials.
  4. Soil never loses its fertility if compost is used.
  5. The food crops which are grown with the use of compost do not have chemicals in them.
