Question 3
many uproot the trees and blow off the rooftops?
Answer:
The high-speed wind or storms may uproot the trees and blow off the rooftops.

Question 4.

Answer:
Nitrogen and carbon dioxide do not support burning.

Question 5.
Why do we feel suffocated in a closed room if something is burning there?
Answer:
This is due to the production of carbon dioxide which is produced by burning. Its accumulation in a closed room causes suffocation.

Question 6.
Which two gases make up major part of the air?
Answer:
Nitrogen and oxygen together make up 99% of the air.

Short Answer Type Questions

Question 1.
List the properties of air.
Answer:

  1. Air is present everywhere around us.
  2. Air is colourless and transparent.
  3. It occupies space.
  4. It supports burning.
  5. It is essential for the survival of living organisms.

Question 2.
Define atmosphere.
Answer:
The blanket of air that surrounds the Earth is known as atmosphere. This layer extends up to many kilometres above the surface of the Earth.

Question 3.
Why do mountaineers carry oxygen cylinders with them while climbing high mountains?
Answer:
Mountaineers carry oxygen cylinder while climbing high mountains because as we go up in the atmosphere, the level of oxygen goes on decreasing. Hence, to avoid suffocation they carry oxygen.

Question 4.
What is the source of carbon dioxide in the air?
Answer:
Plants and animals consume oxygen for respiration and produce carbon dioxide. Plants and animals matter on burning consume oxygen and produce carbon dioxide.

Question 5.
Show the role of long chimneys in factories?
Answer:
The burning of fuels in factories produces smoke. Smoke contains a few gases and fine dust particles which are often harmful to us. Hence, long chimneys take the harmful gases and smoke away from us.

Question 6.
Do you see some tiny shining particles moving in the beam of sunlight? What are these particles? Answer: Yes, we see some tiny shining particles moving in the beam of sunlight. These are dust particles which are present in the air and we see them floating in the beam of light.

Question 7.
Do you recall being scolded by your parents when you breathe through your mouth?
Answer:
Yes, our parents scolded us when we breathe through our mouth because if we do so, harmful dust particles may enter to our body through the mouth and cause snoring, gum disease, etc.

Question 8.
What is a windmill? Mention its uses.
Answer:
A windmill is a structure with long pieces of wood on the outside which turn around as the wind blows. Windmill is used to generate electricity, to pump water, run flour mills, etc.

Question 9.
Make meaningful sentences using the given set of words :
(a) Air, wind, is motion, called, in.
(b) Space, air, occupies.
(c) Respiration, water, for, the air in, dissolved, use, aquatic, animals.
(d) On Earth, the atmosphere, essential, is, for life.
(e) 99%, Oxygen, nitrogen, air, together, and, form.
Answer:
(a) Air in motion is called wind.
(b) Air occupies space.
(c) Aquatic animals use dissolved air in water for respiration.
(d) Atmosphere is essential for life on Earth.
(e) Oxygen and nitrogen together form 99% of air.

Long Answer Type Questions

Question 1.
Why do living things need air to survive?
Answer:
Living things cannot survive without air. We breathe in oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide. Plants use carbon dioxide to make their food through a process called photosynthesis. They release oxygen in the air in this process. Thus, air is important for all living things.

Question 2.
How do the organisms that live in soil get the air for respiration?
Answer:
The organisms which are living under the soil such as in the roots of a plant respire by taking oxygen present in the soil. Some organisms make deep burrows and holes in the soil through which the air reaches them for respiration. When it rains heavily and water fills up all the spaces occupied by the air in the soil, then these animals come out for respiration.

Question 3.
Why air is essential to us?
Answer:
Apart from breathing, air is essential in many ways such as :

  1. Air helps the windmill to rotate and produce electricity to draw water from tube wells and to run flour mills.
  2. Air helps birds and insects to fly.
  3. Air helps in the dispersal of seeds and pollen grains.
  4. Air helps in the movements of sailing yachts, gliders, parachutes and aeroplanes.
  5. Air contains water vapour which is an essential part of water cycle.

Question 4.
How does the balance of oxygen and carbon dioxide maintain in the atmosphere?
Answer:
The balance of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is maintained through respiration in plants and animals and by the photosynthesis in plants. Animals take in oxygen and gives out carbon dioxide which is used by the plants in the process of photosynthesis. Plants produce more oxygen than they consume during transpiration.
