Passage - 2. 

He was a middle-aged man. He seemed neither too smart nor too lazy. He wanted everybody to try their luck. There were discs on the table with numbers from one to ten facing down. All you had to do was to pay 50 paise, pick up any six discs, add up the numbers on the discs and find the total. The article marked with that number was yours. An old man paid 50 paise and selected six discs. He added up the numbers on them and found the total was 15. He was given the article marked 15, which was a beautiful clock. But the old man did not want a clock.

Passage - 3. 

I wanted to try my luck too. I looked at Bhaiya. He encouraged me. I paid 50 paise and took six discs. My luck was not too good. I got two pencils. The shopkeeper bought them from me for 25 paise. I tried again. This time I got a bottle of ink, also of little value. The shopkeeper bought that too for 25 paise. I took a chance for the third time. Still luck was not with me.I had hopes of winning a big prize and continued to try my luck again and again, paying 50 paise each time. But every time I got a trifle. At last I was left with only 25 paise. Again the shopkeeper showed his kindness.

 Back home, Uncle told me that the Lucky Shop man had made a fool of me.
"No, Uncle," I said, "it was just my bad luck".
"No, my boy," said Uncle,' "it was neither good luck nor' bad luck."
"But, Uncle," I said, "I saw an old man getting a clock and a boy getting two or three costly things."
"You don't know, child," Uncle said, "they were all friends of the shopkeeper. They were playing tricks to tempt you to try your luck. They wanted your money and they got it. Now forget about it, and don't tell anybody of your bad luck or your foolishness.'

हिन्दी अनवाद-हर साल ईद के अवसर पर हमारे गाँव में एक मेला भरता था। ईद केवल एक दिन मनाई जाती थी मगर मेले का अन्त कई दिनों बाद होता था। व्यापारी दूर-दूर से हर प्रकार की वस्तुओं को बेचने के लिए आते थे। आप वहाँ पर एक छोटी पिन से लेकर बड़ी भैंस तक कुछ भी खरीद सकते हो। मेरे चाचा मुझे मेले में ले गए। भैया, जो हमारे घर पर काम करते थे, हमारे साथ गए थे। मेले में बहुत सारी भीड़ थी।

चाचा भीड़ में हमारा नेतृत्व करते चल रहे थे जब वे अपने कुछ दोस्तों से मिले। वे साथ कुछ समय बिताए। मेरे चाचा ने मुझसे कहा कि क्या मैं भैया के साथ मेले में उस समय तक घूमँगा जब तक वह वापस नहीं आ जाते। मैं वह करने के लिए तैयार था। चाचा ने मुझे चेतावनी दी थी कि न तो कुछ खरीदना है और न ही ज्यादा दूर तक जाना है उस समय जब वे उनसे दूर हैं। मैंने वादा किया था कि मैं उनका इन्तजार करूंगा।

हिन्दी अनुवाद - मैं और भैया एक दुकान से दूसरी दुकान तक गए। वहाँ पर बहुत सारी वस्तुएँ थीं जो मैं गर मैं अपने चाचा के आने का इन्तजार कर रहा था। तब हम इस दुकान पर आए जिसे भाग्यशाली दुकान कहा जाता था। दुकानदार न तो बूढ़ा था और न ही जवान था। वह अधेड़ उम्र का एक आदमी था।

वह न तो ज्यादा चतुर लग रहा था और न ही ज्यादा सुस्त। वह चाहता था प्रत्येक व्यक्ति अपना भाग्य आजमाये। टेबल पर कुछ तश्तरियाँ रखी थीं जिन पर एक से दस तक अंक लिखे थे उनको उल्टा किया हुआ था। आपको केवल Lucky Box (जादू की पेटी) एक खेल है जिसमें किसी बक्से में छोटी इनामें छिपा दी जाती हैं और प्रतिभागी दैव संयोग द्वारा उन्हें निकालते हैं। 

पचास पैसे देने थे कोई भी छः तश्तरियाँ उठानी थीं, तश्तरियों पर लिखे हुए अंकों को जोड़ना था और उनका जोड़ पता.. करना था। वह संख्या जिस वस्तु पर लिखी थी वह आपकी हो जाएगी। एक वृद्ध व्यक्ति ने पचास पैसे दिए और छः तश्तरियों को चुना। उसने उन पर लिखे अंकों को जोड़ा और पाया कि उनका योग 15 था।

उसे 15 अंक लिखी वस्तु दे दी गई जो कि एक सुन्दर दीवार घड़ी थी। मगर वृद्ध को घड़ी की आवश्यकता नहीं थी। उस दुकानदार ने उसे 15 रुपये देकर वापस खरीदकर अहसान कर दिया। वह वृद्ध व्यक्ति प्रसन्न होकर वहाँ से चला गया था।

हिन्दी अनुवाद-तब मेरे से थोड़े बड़े एक लड़के ने अपना भाग्य आजमाया। उसे 25 पैसे की कीमत का एक कंघा मिला। दुकानदार न तो ज्यादा खुश दिखा और न ज्यादा दुःखी। उसने उस लड़के से 25 पैसे में कंघा खरीद लिया। उस लड़के ने फिर से अपना भाग्य आजमाया। अब उसे तीन रुपए की कीमत का, एक स्याही वाला पेन मिला। तब उसने तीसरी बार प्रयास किया और उसे 25 रुपए की कीमत की एक कलाई घड़ी मिली।

जब उसने फिर से प्रयास किया उसे दस रुपए की कीमत का एक टेबल लैम्प मिला। लड़का खुश था और वह एक मुस्कुराहट और बहुत सारा पैसा लेकर वहाँ से चला गया। मैं भी अपना भाग्य आजमाना चाहता था। मैंने भैया की ओर देखा। उसने मुझे प्रेरित किया। मैंने 50 पैसे दिए और छः तश्तरियाँ लीं। मेरा भाग्य ज्यादा अच्छा नहीं था। मुझे दो पेन्सिल मिलीं। दुकानदार ने मुझसे 25 पैसे में उन्हें खरीद लिया। मैंने फिर से प्रयास किया। इस बार मुझे स्याही की एक दवात मिली वह भी कम कीमत की थी। दुकानदार ने उसे भी 25 पैसे में खरीद लिया। मैंने तीसरी बार भाग्य आजमाया। अभी भी भाग्य मेरे साथ नहीं था।

हिन्दी अनुवाद - मैं बड़े इनाम जीतने की उम्मीद रखता हुआ बार-बार अपने भाग्य को पुनः पुनः आजमाता रहा। प्रत्येक बार पचास पैसे देता था। मगर हर बार मुझे हलका-सा मिलता। आखिरकार मेरे पास 25 पैसे बचे थे। दूकानदार ने फिर से अपनी दयालुता मुझे दिखाई । उसने कहा कि वह या तो एक बार फिर से 25 पैसे देकर खेले या अपना खाता उसी समय भुगतान करे। मैंने फिर से खेला और अंत में वे 25 पैसे भी गायब हो गए। - लोग मेरी ओर देख रहे थे।

कुछ मेरे बुरे भाग्य पर हँस रहे थे, मगर कोई भी सहानुभूति नहीं दिखा रहा था। भैया और मैं उस स्थान पर गये जहाँ पर चाचा हमें छोड़कर गए थे और हम उनके आने का इंतजार करने लगे। उसी समय वे आ गए। उन्होंने मेरी ओर देखा और कहा, "रशीद, तुम परेशान लग रहे हो। क्या बात है?"

हिन्दी अनुवाद - मैंने कुछ भी नहीं कहा। भैया ने उन्हें बताया कि क्या हुआ था! चाचा को न तो गुस्सा आया और न ही दुःखी हुए। वह मुस्कुराये और मेरी पीठ थपथपाई। वह मुझे एक दुकान पर ले गए और मेरे लिए एक सुन्दर छाता, बिस्किट, मिठाई और कुछ अन्य छोटे उपहार खरीदे। फिर हम घर वापस आ गये। घर वापस आकर, चाचा ने मुझे कहा कि भाग्य वाली दुकान के आदमी ने मुझे मूर्ख बनाया था। "नहीं, चाचा" मैंने कहा, "यह केवल मेरा दुर्भाग्य था।" "नहीं, मेरे बच्चे" चाचा ने कहा, "यह न तो सौभाग्य था और न ही दुर्भाग्य था।"
