Understanding the Poem :

Question 1.
The title, “Refugee Blues' encapsulates the theme of the poem. Comment.
Answer:
'Blues' are African-American form of ballads. They are melancholic and sad. They can be called the sad black slave's songs'. In the blue ballad, Auden narrates the sufferings of the Jews by Nazis, their persecution, the holocaust, the concentration camps, the rise of Hitler and Nazism. The poem revolves around a Jewish couple who escapes the Nazi Germany and emigrates to the United States of America. These refugees now sing this Blue talking of their agony and pain that they have nowhere to go.

Question 2.
What is the poetic technique used by the poet to convey the plaintive theme of the poem? ।
Answer:
'Refugee Blues' is a Blue Ballad. Ballads were popular in Ireland and Britain till 18th century. These Blues became popular among African-American at the end of 19th century. Auden who was a British migrated to the U.S.A. He blends the two techniques to bring out something that sings the sorrows and sufferings of Jewish Refugees.

The meter used in the poem is the same as it was used in his poem “Calypso' written around the same time. Ballads were popular medieval forms of narrative verse and a Blue is an AfricanAmerican music that has a rigid pattern concerning the use of repetitions.

In the poem, the first two lines of every stanza rhyme with each other while the third line draws a repetitive form with the phrase ‘my dear'. It is interesting to note that the first word in every stanza is a verb. The poem is a first person narrative in a colloquial and informal language.

Question 3.
What do the reference to the birds and animals made in the poem suggest?
Answer:
“Refugee Blues' is a melancholic poem that narrates the constant terror that hovers over a Jew couple who have escaped to America. The constant fear of death haunts them. They are unwelcomed even to the new found land, America as they accuse them that they will take away their bread'. The poet juxtaposes the birds and animals to the lives of the Jews.

The freedom that the dogs, the cats or the fish enjoy is not blessed to the Jews. They remember the orders of Hitler to wipe out the whole Jew race through the holocaust and concentration camps where they were thrust into gas chambers. It is brought out that even animals in America enjoy freedom and are respected whereas German Jews have no right to live. The narrator is upset that even a fish that is at the mere distance of 10 feet from him can swim freely while he is mourning at his misery.

Question 4.
How does the poet juxtapose the human condition with the behaviour of the political class?
Answer:
The poem is crafted in the environment when the whole of Germany rose to the ideology of Nazism and the political thinkers were determined to terminate the whole of Jew community. The thunderous rumbling of Adolf Hitler shook waves of terror across Europe that they must die. This thing paralysed the Jews to utmost horror. The narrator exclaims that we are in his mind. In a public meeting in the USA where the Jews had taken refuge, the speaker was speaking against Jews.

He possibly meant that if the Jews were allowed to settle in, they would steal their jobs and food. The Jews across America and Europe were being looked at with bitter hatred. Everyone wanted them dead. At this time the couple is left destitute at the hands of fate. They are scared and bewildered. They cannot go back to their nation. They suffer the loss of identity. A striking contrast is drawn between the two sects. One is comprising of the people like him, the Jews and the other is the one who is hunting them and want to kill them.

Question 5.
How is the essence of the poem captured in the lines 'two tickets to Happiness'?
Answer:
The narrator and his partner are homeless and they cannot go back to their home land. They grieve for their loss of identity and home. Desperate to be happy they are ready to pay for it. The picture presented is piteous and lamentable.

Though they cannot have the happiness in reality, they imagine an express train that goes to a land of happiness and wish to purchase two tickets for it one for himself and other for his partner. The narrator desperately looks for some place to board the train but every coach was full.

It is death present everywhere and they cannot afford to be happy as Hitler has called the whole of Europe that they must die. Even in the end of a land for stretched whiteness of snow everywhere, it is displeasing to see that Nazi army is hunting the Jews, obviously to kill them.

About the Poem

This poem was written in 1939 while Auden was living in New York. The poem describes the condition of Jewish refugees during the period of Nazi Germany. The poem is spoken by a Jewish refugee living in New York. He is addressing his lover and reflecting on the fact that he and many other refugees in a similar position are not made welcome in the city.

Let us assume there are ten million people living here in New York city. Some of them are rich and some others are poor. Yet there is no room for us. We used to have | a country. It was ours. It still exists there. But we cannot return there. Yew trees growing there can bloom again. But once we fled from our home land, we did so for | good.

Here in New York we were told that if we didn't have a passport, we were officially dead. I went to a committee but they said to come back next year. But how are we going to eat in the meantime. At a public meeting somebody got up and argued against refugees. He did not like refugees letting into the country because he said that they will steal native New Yorkers' work and food.

I heard the thunder rumbling and it put me in mind of Adolf Hitler calling for Jews like us to be killed. I look around and see European dogs and cats. They have been allowed into America to live but German Jews like us are not allowed to come here. Even the fish in the harbour seem to be freer than us. In a dream I saw a vast apartment building with a thousand floor, a thousand windows and a thousand doors, yet there was not a room for us here. I stood in the snow and saw ten thousand soldiers marching around and looking for refugees like us.
