Understanding the Poem :

Question 1.
Why does the poet prefer to be a primitive Pagan rather than a member of civilized society?
Answer:
It was the age of the First Industrialisation Movement. Men were becoming more and more busy with new developments. They were getting away from the contact of nature. Wordsworth is deeply disturbed at the rising materialism among the people. Now they are busy in getting and spending. He mourns that humanity has wonderful powers. But we are letting such powers go waste. Mankind has given her heart away to this destructive blessing. Thus Wordsworth decides to become a Pagan.

These Pagans were the people living in the primitive age. They believed in many gods and goddesses. They lived in the close contact of nature and worshipped natural powers in the form of gods. The poet finds that to be close to nature, he should be one of them. He wishes to enjoy standing on the grasslands and have the glimpses of the country side. Thus he will feel a little less lonely. He wishes to go back in the times of Pagans where he would have the chances to see Proteus rising from the sea and Triton blowing his horn. Wordsworth wishes to be in absolute harmony with the nature.

Question 2.
What, according to the poet, are human beings out of tune?
Answer:
Wordsworth has always been close to nature. In this poem, the poet criticizes the humanity that is distanced from the nature. The materialistic tendency of getting and spending is found everywhere. It is all due to industrialisation and Wordsworth calls it a sordid boon. He is unhappy because mankind has given his heart away to this destructive blessing.

We consider the Industrial Revolution a boon. But the poet deeply condemns it. We do not see the nature that is ours. Wordsworth appreciates nature's beauty. He says how the sea bores her bosom to the moon. The beauty of white light reflected on the water is magnificent. Then the poet says how the wild winds blow hovering. However, he deplores the loss of nature. He suffers due to the mechanical advancement of the society. He says how the humanity is out of tune with nature. He wishes to become a Pagan so that he night enjoy the glimpses of the beauty of nature.

RBSE Class 11 English The World is Too Much With Us Important Questions and Answers

Question 1.
Write down the summary of the poem 'The World is too Much With Us'.
कविता 'The World is too Much with Us' का सारांश लिखिये।
Answer:
We are so much preoccupied with our worldly affairs - including making money and spending it - that it weakens our ability to perceive what really matters. We have given our souls away in order to reap a material blessing (a sordid boon). In our quest for material gain, we do not notice the beauty of the sea or the fury of the winds. Nothing in nature moves us. The poet wishes to be a Pagan brought up in an outdated religion.

Question 2.
In what way has Wordsworth's love of Nature been brought out in the sonnet "The World is too Much With Us'?
प्रस्तुत सोनेट 'The World is too Much With Us' में वर्ड्सवर्थ का प्रकृति के प्रति प्रेम किस प्रकार व्यक्त हुआ है?
Answer:
Wordsworth's love of Nature is clearly brought out in this sonnet when he deplores the tendency of his contemporaries to pursue materialistic gains at the cost of what Nature offers. The people of his times are terribly busy in earning wealth and spending it on wasteful pleasures and needless luxuries. They have lost the capacity to appreciate the beauty of Nature and, thus, have deprived themselves of the blessings of Nature. The poet longs to go back to the times of Pagans, who worshipped Nature.

Question 3.
Why does Wordsworth wish to be a Pagan?
Answer:
Wordsworth regrets the fact that the people of his times are lost in worldly affairs and in earning money and spending it on wasteful pleasures and luxuries, so much so, that Nature has lost all meaning to them. This tendency of theirs has led to their spiritual and moral deterioration. As such, the poet is attracted to Paganism, an out-dated religion, which prescribed worship of Natural objects and appreciation of the beautiful aspects of Nature. The poet fancies to go back to such times in order to be close to Nature.

The World is Too Much With Us Summary and Translation in Hindi

About the Poet

William Wordsworth (1770-1850) spent most of his life in the Lake district or northern England, and the many hours that he spent wandering about the hills and woods led to the production of some of the finest poetry on nature. His work Lyrical Ballads, co-authored with Coleridge in 1798, is regarded as the beginning of the English Romantic Movement. He selected subjects from nature and rustic life. He held the view that the language of poetry should be simple and natural.

About the Poem

The World is too Much With Us' a sonnet by William Wordsworth who is known to be a Romantic Poet in English literature. He is a great worshipper of nature. It was a period of the First Industrial Revolution in which the world was being absorbed in materialism and thus an increasing distance was being created between the man and the nature. The poet says that people have forsaken their souls for material gains. In fact the whole text of the poem denounces materialism which the poet has seen around him.

He claims that materialistic approach to mankind has transformed human beings in senseless individuals. The lust for power and money has made people hollow as they have readily given their hearts to the things they need for material comforts. They fail to perceive beauty in nature. He swears that he would rather be a Pagan than a rich man alienated from the bliss of nature. He wants to see and hear the Greek gods and feel less forlorn.

'The World is too Much With Us' वर्ड्सवर्थ के द्वारा लिखी हुई एक सौनेट (14 लाइन की कविता) है जिन्हें अंग्रेजी साहित्य में रोमांटिक कवि माना जाता है।

Stanza-1.

The World is too much with us; late and soon,
Getting and spending, we lay waste our powers :
Little we see in Nature that is ours;
We have given our hearts away, a sordid boon!
(Page 117)

कठिन शब्दार्थ-The World (द वल्ड्) = worldly things (सांसारिक वस्तुएँ) । too much (टू मच्) = more than the proper limit (एक उचित सीमा से भी अधिक)। late and soon (लेट एण्ड सून्) = at any time (किसी भी समय)। lay waste (ले वेस्ट) = get used up for no profit (व्यर्थ में बर्बाद होने देना)। little (लिट्ल) = not at all (बिल्कुल भी नहीं)। hearts (हाट्स) = heart-touching feelings I sordid (सॉडिड्) = unpleasant (गंदा)।

Stanza–2.

The Sea that bares her bosom to the moon;
The Winds that will be howling at all hours,
And are up-gathered now like sleeping flowers,
For this, for everything, we are out of tune;
(Page 117)

कठिन शब्दार्थ-bears (बेअ(र)स) = shows openly (खुले रूप से दिखाना) | howling (हाउलिङ्) = making a loud sound (जोर की हवा बहने की आवाज होना)। for this (फॉ(र) दिस्) = for the bliss of nature (प्रकृति के आनन्द के लिये)। out of tune (आउट ऑव् ट्यून्) = isolated from the main stream of life i.e. living with nature (विचारों, रुचियों, भावनाओं की दृष्टि से अलग हो जाना)।

Stanza-3

It moves us not.
Great God! I'd rather be
A Pagan suckled in a creed outworn;
So might I, standing on this pleasant lea,
Have glimpses that would make me less forlorn;
Have sight of Proteus rising from the sea;
Or hear old Triton blow his wreathed horn.
- (Page 117)

कठिन शब्दार्थ-It (इट्) = these incidents of nature (प्रकृति की ये घटनाएँ)। moves us not (मूव्स अस् नॉट) = we are not impressed at all and take no interest in (हम प्रभावित नहीं होते हैं)। pagan (पेगन्) = people of ancient times who believed in many Gods and worshipped idols i.e. non-Christian or non-Muslim (विधर्मी)। Outworn (आउट्वॉन्) = lasted for a much longer time; hence old (बहुत पुराना)। glimpse (ग्लिम्प्स ) = a sudden flash (झलक)। forlorn (फलॉन्) = lonely (अकेला)। Proteus (प्रोटिअस) = a sea-god in Greek mythology who made prophesies and disappeared (एक समुद्री देवता जो भविष्यवाणियाँ करता था और ओझल हो जाता था)। Triton (ट्राइट्न्) = a sea god who appears blowing a shell and his body above the waist is that of a man, below it of a dolphin (एक समुद्री देवता जो शंख बजाता है, उसका ऊपर का आधा शरीर मनुष्य का है और नीचे का आधा शरीर डॉलफिन मछली का है)।

RBSE Solutions for Class 11 English Woven Words Poem 5 The World is Too Much With Us
