RBSE Class 11 English The Peacock Textbook Questions and Answers

Understanding the Poem :

Question 1.
Comment on the lines that make you visualise the colourful image of the peacock.
Answer:
The poem gives a glimpse of a peacock. There are some lines which create a vivid image of the peacock in our mind.
The poetess describes the peacock as he writes a flash of turquoise in the peepal tree?. The mind of the reader is filled with a colourful image of a peacock. There is a phrase "the slender neck”. It portrays the sleek figure of the peacock and the grace with which it poses.

The poetess writes, “A blue shadow will fall over you’. Again it casts a wonderful image of the peacock. The poetess talks about the beautiful eyes of the peacock and writes 'those dark glowing eyes, violet fringed with golden amber'.

Question 2.
What are the cues that signal the presence of the peacock in the vicinity?
Answer:
There are many cues in the poem that signal the presence of the peacock in the vicinity. In the beginning of the poem a loud sharp call is heard and this call seems to be coming from nowhere. This gives the hint that there is a peacock somewhere nearby. Then there is a flash of turquoise in the peepal tree which is an other indication that the peacock is present there.

The slender arched neck of the peacock as he descends gives its presence. We find the glimpse of the very end of the tail as swiftly it darts away. As one reads a book with great concentration sitting in the veranda, a blue shadow falls over him. The wind, then, changes the direction and the steady humming of bees in the bush nearby gets stopped. All this suggests the presence of the peacock.

Question 3.
How does the connection drawn between the tail and the eyes add to the descriptive detail of the poem?
Answer:
Sujata Bhatt details the plumage of the peacock in an artful and delicate way. The whole poem is a celebration of the beauty of the peacock. The life-like impression of the feathers and the eyes on them are best seen as the peacock fans its tail. This pattern actually resembles an eye which he appreciates immensely. When the poetess tries to get a glimpse of the peacock, it gathers its tail and eludes. Then the poetess praises these eyes impressions.

The poetess describes the imprints of the eyes on the tail-end as 'dark glowing eyes are always open'. Of course the eyes are always open as they cannot have eyelids. She calls them the eyes of the peacock. The shaking of the feathers give a view of the blinking of the eyes as the eyes on the feathers will not blink in any other way.

Question 4.
How does the poem capture the elusive nature of the peacock?
Answer:
The peacock, as the poetess narrates, is not so easy to be found. On account of its elusive nature one has to work very hard to get a glimpse of it. The poetess says that one has to sit in the veranda and read a favourite book with great concentration. The moment he begins to live inside the book and forgets all about the surroundings, the peacock descends casting a blue shadow over him. The steady humming of the bees in the nearby bushes will stop and the cat will awaken and stretch.

The attention of the man is broken and he has to look up or else the peacock will disappear again somewhere. It is evanescent in nature. As the man tries to catch a sight of those dark glowing eyes violet fringed with golden amber, it quickly runs out of sight gathering its tail which gives a view of blinking eyes or else they are always open printed on the tail end.

RBSE Solutions for Class 11 English Woven Words Poem 1 The Peacock

Question 5.
The peacock is a colourful bird. How does the poem capture the various colours that its plumage displays?
Answer:
An Asian bird peacock is one of the most colourful birds. Its plumage reflects a number of colours. Sujata Bhatt has detailed the tail of numerous colours with such finesse that it is not hard to visualise the blue and the golden colour of the peacock. In the very beginning when she tells the readers about the presence of the peacock in the vicinity, she talks of the turquoise flashed in the peepal tree.

Vibrant reflection of the turquoise colour which is most dominating in its feathers forms an image in the readers' mind. Even when the peacock makes a glimpse, the poetess talks of its dark glowing eyes in feathers. She describes them violet fringed with golden amber. It creates a vivid imagery of a widespread plumage of the peacock.

RBSE Class 11 English The Peacock Important Questions and Answers

Question 1.
Why is the peacock only partially visible?
Answer:
The loud sharp call of the peacock appears to come from nowhere. It means that he is not visible. Then he is seen only as a flash of greenish blue, similar to turquoise, in the peepal tree. Again, he descends from the peepal tree with its slender neck curved away and as he prepares to dart away, it is only the end of his tail which is seen. Thus the peacock is only partially seen.

Question 2.
Why does the poetess see only the tail of the peacock and the blinking eyes in the feathers?
Answer:
As the peacock comes down from the tree, it moves away its slender neck. While moving away suddenly, it only leaves a glimpse of its tail end which the poetess sees. The peacock is turning away gathering its tail. At this time one can see only the dark glowing eyes on the tail. These are all the imprints of the eyes on the feathers' end. Hence they are always open. But the peacock gathers its tail. So the movement of the tail presents the eyes as if they were blinking.

Question 3.
How does the poetess paint the picture of the peacock?
Answer:
The peacock painted by the poetess eludes observation. First, his call seems to come from nowhere. Then, he appears as a flash of greenish-blue turquoise in the peepal tree. He descends with his slender neck arched away and when he darts away, only a glimpse of the end of his tail can be got. As he gathers his beautiful plumage to turn away, the imprints of eyes on it appear to be blinking like real eyes. Thus the poetess paints a colourful picture of the peacock.

About the Poem

'The Peacock' is a beautiful poem by Sujata Bhatt. In this poem the loud call of the peacock is heard coming from nowhere, and suddenly the peacock comes into the sight in the peepal tree. Then the poet appreciates the royal, fascinating, precious and magnificent body parts of a peacock. We know that a peacock is a national bird of India. So all that she appreciates is of India.

The whole poem is talking about India. Let us think that a man is reading some interesting book with great concentration and he gets irritated at the sound of the wind or at the humming of bees in some nearby bushes; and he suddenly notices a blue shadow of a peacock passing over him. The winds will change and the humming of bees will stop. The man will see the peacock turning away. He will see the moving tail which will present the sight of blinking eyes.
