Russell's three passions are to seek love, knowledge and to alleviate evils like poverty, famine, oppression, etc. According to Russell he had strong desire for his passions. He is well aware that it is not difficult for him to get what he wants. He says that these passions have governed all his life.

He says these passions like great winds, have blown him here and there. He means to say he worked very hard to attain his passions. Many times he had to suffer great disappointment. But in the end he fought with the great winds and sought his passions.

This passion of love relieves him of loneliness. All the saints of the world have imagined it. All the poets have also imagined it by means of their poetry.

But it is very regretful that they bring him to the earth. The cries of pain echo in his heart. Three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, have governed my life : the longing for love, the search for knowledge, and unbearable pity for the suffering of mankind. These passions, like great winds, have blown me hither and thither, in a wayward course, over a deep ocean of anguish, reaching to the very verge of despair.

I have sought love, first, because it brings ecstasy ecstasy so great that I would often have sacrificed all the rest of life for a few hours of this joy. I have sought it, next, because it relieves loneliness - that terrible loneliness in which one shivering consciousness looks over the rim of the world into the cold unfathomable lifeless abyss. I have sought it, finally, because in the union of love, I have seen, in a mystic miniature, the prefiguring vision of the heaven that saints and poets have imagined

And I have tried to apprehend the Pythagorean power by which number holds sway over the flux. A little of this, but not much, I have achieved. Love and knowledge, so far as they were possible, led upward toward the heavens. 

But always pity brought me back to earth. Echoes of cries of pain reverberate in my heart. Children in famine, victims tortured by oppressors, helpless old people a hated burden to their sons, and the whole world of loneliness, poverty and pain make a mockery of what human life should be. I long to alleviate the evil, but I cannot, and I too suffer. This has been my life. I have found it worth living, and would gladly live it again if the chance were offered to me.

लेखक के बारे में 

बट्टैण्ड रसल (1872-1969), एक ब्रितानवी दार्शनिक और गणितज्ञ, ने दर्शन शास्त्र, राजनीति और शिक्षा पर अनेक लोकप्रिय काम लिखे हैं। उसने बीसवीं शताब्दी में तर्क के भाव में| उद्भव में एक मुख्य भूमिका निभाई और दर्शन शास्त्र के विज्ञान के साथ पहचान करने के लिए निरन्तर प्रयास किए। उसे 1950 में साहित्य के लिए नोबेल पुरस्कार भी मिला। यह वाला पद्यांश बट्रेण्ड रसल की आत्मकथा से लिया गया एक अंश है।।
