Question 1.
Answer the following questions : 
निम्न प्रश्नों के उत्तर दीजिए : 

(i) Pick out the line that suggests that the child is afraid of snakes. 
कविता में से उस पंक्ति को चुनिए जो यह बताती है कि बच्चा साप से डरा हुआ है। 
Answer:
"I saw a snake and ran away." 
मैंने एक साँप देखा और भाग गया। 

(ii) Which line shows a complete change of the child's attitude towards snakes? 
Read it aloud. कौनसी पंक्ति बच्चे के स्वभाव में पूर्ण परिवर्तन को प्रदर्शित करती है। इसे जोर से पढ़िए। 
Answer:
"I'll stand aside and watch him pass" 
"मैं एक ओर खड़ा होकर उसे जाते हुए ध्यान से देखूगा।" 

(iii) “But mother says that kind is good..." What is mother referring to? 
"मगर माताजी कहती हैं कि यह अच्छे प्रकार का है....." माँ किसकी ओर संकेत कर रही है? 
Answer:
Mother is referring to the garden snake. 
माताजी बगीचे के साँप की ओर संकेत कर रही है।

Wiggles (तेजी से हिलता-डुलता) शब्द घास में साँप की हलचल को संदर्भित करता है।

There are four pairs of rhyming words in the poem. Say them aloud. 
इस कविता में लयबद्ध शब्दों के चार जोड़े हैं। उनको जोर से बोलिए।

A snake has no legs or feet, but it moves very fast. Can you guess how? Discuss in the group. 
एक साँप के न पैर होते हैं न टांगें, मगर यह तेजी से भागता है। क्या आप अनुमान लगा सकते हैं किस तरह से? समूह में चर्चा कीजिए। 
Answer:
A snake wiggles i.e. it twists and turns its body in a zigzag pattern and thus is able to move very fast even without legs.

एक साँप तेजी से हिलता-डुलता है अर्थात् यह अपने शरीर को एक टेढ़े-मेढ़े तरीके से मोड़ता और घुमाता है और इस प्रकार से वह बिना पैरों के तेजी से चलता है।

Can you recall the word used for a cobra's long sharp teeth? Where did you come across this word first? 
क्या आप उस शब्द को याद कर सकते हैं जो कोबरा साँप के दाँतों के लिए प्रयोग किया गया था? आपके सामने सबसे पहले वह शब्द कहाँ आया? 
Answer:
A cobra's long teeth are called fangs. I came across this word first in a story called "Cobra and the Old man". 
कोबरा के लम्बे दाँतों को fangs कहा जाता है। मैं इस शब्द से प्रथम बार रूबरू "कोबरा और वृद्ध व्यक्ति" नामक कहानी में हुआ था।

I saw a snake and ran away... 
Some snakes are dangerous, they say; 
But mother says that kind is good, 
And eats up insects for his food.

आपके पाठ पढ़ने से पहले - क्या आपने किसी सांप को नेवले के साथ लड़ते हुए देखा है या बिल में जाते हुए, या नदी में तैरते हुए देखा है? प्रत्येक, लगभग प्रत्येक यह विश्वास करते हैं कि सर्प खतरनाक होते हैं । कुछ सांप होते हैं, अधिकांश खतरनाक नहीं होते हैं। आप एक हानिरहित सर्प पर आधारित इस कविता को पढ़िए।

कठिन शब्दार्थ एवं हिन्दी अनुवाद

I saw a snake ............. garden snake!" (Page 137) 

कठिन शब्दार्थ-ran away (रैन् अवे) = भाग गया। insects (इन्सेक्ट्स ) = कीट। wiggle (विग्ल) = तेजी से हिलना-डुलना। aside (असाइड्) = एक ओर।

हिन्दी अनुवाद - मैंने एक साँप को देखा और भाग गया कुछ साँप खतरनाक होते हैं, वे ऐसा कहते हैं। मगर माताजी कहती हैं कि इस प्रकार का साँप अच्छे प्रकार का होता है। वह अपने भोजन के लिए कीटों को खाता है। इसलिए जब वह घास में तेजी से हिल-डुल रहा हो, मैं एक ओर खड़ा हो जाऊंगा और उसे जाते हुए ध्यान से देखूगा। और मैं अपने आपसे कहूँगा, "इसमें कोई भी गलत नहीं है कि यह बगीचे का एक अहानिकारक सांप है!"
