Working with the Poem 

1. Discuss these questions in small groups before you answer them.

(i) When is a grown-up likely to say this? "Don't talk with your mouth full". 
एक बड़ा व्यक्ति आपको कब यह कह सकता है? "अपना मुँह भोजन में भरकर मत बोलो।"
Answer:
A grown-up is likely to say "Don't talk with your mouth full", if we talk while eating. 
एक बड़ी उम्र का व्यक्ति यह तब कह सकता है "अपना मुँह भोजन में भरकर मत बोलो" जब हम खाते समय बात कर रहे हों।

(ii) When are you likely to be told this? “Say thank you".
आपको संभवतः यह कब कहा जा सकता है, 'धन्यवाद बोलो'। 
Answer:
We are likely to be told to "Say thank you" when we are given something.
हमें संभवत: यह 'धन्यवाद कहो' तब कहा जा सकता है जब हमें कुछ दिया जाता है।

(iii) When do you think an adult would say this? "No one thinks you are funny".

Answer:
An adult would say “No one thinks you are funny", when a child does foolish things simply to attract attention. 
एक वयस्क हमें कहेगा कि कोई नहीं सोचेगा कि आप मजाक कर रहे हैं', जब एक बच्चा ध्यान आकृष्ट करने के लिए मूर्खतापूर्ण कार्य करेगा। 

Question 2. 
The last two lines of the poem are not prohibitions or instructions. What is the adult now asking the child to do? Do you think the poet is suggesting that this is unreasonable? Why? 
कविता की अन्तिम दो पंक्तियाँ किसी बात के निषेध या निर्देश नहीं हैं। एक वयस्क एक बच्चे से अब क्या कह रहा है? क्या आप यह सोचते हैं कि कवि यह सुझाव दे रहा है कि यह अतार्किक है? क्यों? 
Answer:
In the last two lines, the adult is now asking the child to be decisive i.e. make his own decisions and do as decided. I think the poet suggests that this expectation of adults is unreasonable. Because the child is never allowed to make his own choices. He/She is always guided by an adult and never taught to decide for himself /herself. 

अंतिम दो पंक्तियों में एक वयस्क व्यक्ति बच्चे से निर्णय लेने के लिए कह रहा है जैसे कि आप स्वयं निर्णय करें या जैसे निश्चय किया है वैसे करें। मैं यह सोचता हूँ कि कवि का सुझाव है कि वयस्कों की यह उम्मीद अतार्किक है क्योंकि बच्चे को कभी भी स्वयं के निर्णय लेने की अनुमति नहीं दी जाती है। उसे हमेशा किसी वयस्क के द्वारा निर्देशित किया जाता है और स्वयं के निर्णय लेने के बारे में नहीं सिखाया जाता है। 

Working with the Poem 

Question 1.

Why do you think grown-ups say the kind of things mentioned in the poem? Is it important that they teach children good manners and how to behave in public?

Answer:
I think grown-ups say the kind of things mentioned in the poem for they think it is good for children to learn and know how to behave in public. Their intentions are just to teach them good manners and correct their wrong behaviour. It is their sense of responsibility towards their children that makes them tell the children, the do's and don'ts. Yes, it is important that they teach children good manners and the way to behave in public.

मैं सोचता हूँ कि बड़े व्यक्ति बच्चों को कविता में व्यक्त बातें कहते हैं कि वे यह सोचते हैं कि बच्चों के लिए यह सीखना अच्छा है और यह जानना भी अच्छा है कि सार्वजनिक रूप से कैसे व्यवहार करें? उनका उद्देश्य उनको अच्छे तौर-तरीके सिखाना है और उनके गलत व्यवहार को सही करना सिखाना है। यह बच्चों के प्रति उनके उत्तरदायित्व की समझ है जिससे वे बच्चों को ऐसा कहते हैं कि उनको ऐसा करना चाहिए और ऐसा नहीं। हाँ, यह महत्त्वपूर्ण है कि वे बच्चों को अच्छे तौर-तरीके और सार्वजनिक रूप से कैसे व्यवहार करें यह सिखायें। 

Question 4. 
If you had to make some rules for grownups to follow, what would you say? Make at least five such rules. Arrange the lines as in a poem.
यदि आपको बड़ों के लिए कुछ नियम बनाने हों तो आप क्या कहेंगे? कम से कम पांच नियम बनाइए। कविता के अनुसार पंक्तियों को व्यवस्थित करें। 
Answer:
1. Don't scold and shout at the children. 
2. Let the children play as much as they want. 
3. Take the children for outings every sunday. 
4. Allow the children to watch TV as much as they want. 
5. And the most important of all - 'Don't chivvy'.
