Working with the Poem 

1. Answer the following questions : 

निम्न प्रश्नों के उत्तर दीजिए

(i) Who is the speaker in the poem?
कविता में बोलने वाला कौन है? 
Answer:
The speaker in the poem is a child. 
कविता में बोलने वाला एक बच्चा है। 

(ii) Is she/he afraid or curious, or 
वह दोनों ही डरा हुआ या उत्सुक है। 

(iii) What is she/he planning to do soon? 
वह जल्दी ही क्या करने की योजना बना रहा है? 
Answer:
She/he is planning to go into the shed one day soon. 
वह जल्दी ही एक दिन उस कमरे में जाने की योजना बना रही/रहा है। 

(iv) "But not just yet.. .. " suggests doubt, fear, hesitation, laziness or something else. Choose the word which seems right to you. Tell others why you chose it.
आलसीपन या कुछ अन्य बता रहा है। जो शब्द आपको उचित लगे उसे चुनिए। दूसरों को भी यह बताइए कि आपने यह क्यों चुना है। 
Answer:
I think that the most suitable word here is "hesitation". I think that the child hesitates to go inside the shed for the fear of exposing his brother. He would not like to annoy his brother. 

मैं यहाँ पर हिचकिचाहट को सर्वथा उपयुक्त मानता हूँ। मैं सोचता हूँ कि बच्चा उस कमरे में जाने से हिचकिचा रहा है कि उसके भाई को इसका पता चल जाएगा। उसे यह डर है। वह अपने भाई को नाराज नहीं करना चाह रहा है।

Is there a room in your house or a house in your neighbourhood/locality where you would rather not go alone, and never at night? If there is such a place and a story to go with it, let others hear all about it. 
क्या आपके घर या पड़ौस/क्षेत्र में कोई कमरा है जहाँ पर आप अकेले नहीं गए हों, और रात को तो कभी नहीं? अगर इस प्रकार का कोई स्थान या कहानी है तो आप दूसरों को यह बताइए। 
Answer:
(i) No, there is no such place either in my house or in my locality or neighbourhood. 
नहीं मेरे घर, क्षेत्र या पड़ोस में इस प्रकार का कोई मकान नहीं है। 

(ii) There is an abandoned house, down the street next to ours. People say that no one has been living in that house for the last twenty years or so. No one has ever seen anyone going towards that house. In fact, its ownership is also unknown. We have strict warnings from our elders to not to go close to that house.

हमारी गली में आगे की ओर एक पुराना, टूटा हुआ मकान है। लोग कहते हैं कि पिछले 20 सालों या उससे अधिक समय से कोई भी उस मकान में नहीं रह रहा है। किसी ने भी किसी को उस मकान की ओर जाते हुए नहीं देखा है। वास्तव में, इसके मालिक का पता नहीं है। हमारे बड़े-बुजुर्गों ने उस मकान के पास जाने के लिए हमें मना किया हुआ है। 

(iii) Although not proven, there are stories of missing people who dared to go inside that house. I don't believe in ghosts but the strange look of that house scare me. Thus, I don't even think of going near it.

यद्यपि यह साबित नहीं हो पाया है मगर उन लापता लोगों की कहानियाँ हैं जो उस मकान में अन्दर गए थे। मुझे भूतों पर "मंगर ठीक अभी नहीं...." यह शक, डर, हिचकिचाहट, विश्वास नहीं है मगर उस मकान का अजीब सा दिखना मुझे डराता है। इस तरह से मैं इसके नजदीक जाने के बारे में भी नहीं सोच सकता हूँ।

There's a shed at the bottom of our garden 
With a spider's web hanging across the door, 
The hinges are rusty and creak in the wind. 
When I'm in bed I lie and I listen, I'll open that door one day.

कविता के बारे में -

क्या आप जानते हैं कि 'शेड' क्या है? गायों का शरण स्थल, औजार रखने का स्थल, लकड़ी का स्थल, उदाहरण के लिए यह एक छोटा कमरा होता है जो कि मुख्य मकान से दूर होता है। इसमें हम वस्तुएँ, जानवर, औजार, वाहन इत्यादि रखते हैं। आप अपने साथी से पूछिए कि क्या उसने कभी कोई 'शेड' देखा है। आप उसको इसे कक्षा को बताने के लिए कहें।

कठिन शब्दार्थ - bottom (बॉटम्) = अन्त में। spider (स्पाइड(र)) = मकड़ी। web (वेब) = जाला। | hang (हैन्ङ्) = लटकना। hinges (हिन्ज्ज ) = दरवाजों व खिड़कियों के कब्जे । rusty (रस्टि) = जंग लगे। हुए। creak (क्रीक्) = चरमराहट की अजीब आवाज।

हिन्दी अनुवाद - हमारे बगीचे के अन्तिम छोर पर एक शेड बना हुआ है। इसमें मकड़ी के जाले दरवाजे से | लेकर सारे कमरे में लटक रहे हैं । इस कक्ष के दरवाजों के कब्जों में जंग लग गई है और हवा के साथ इन दरवाजों से चरमराहट की आवाज आती है। जब मैं बिस्तर में होता हूँ उस समय मैं यह लेटकर सुनता हूँ। मैं एक दिन उस दरवाजे को अवश्य खोलूँगा।

कठिन शब्दार्थ - dusty (डस्टि) = धूल-भरी। cracked (कैक्ट) = चटके हुए, कड़क की आवाज । pane (पेन्) = शीशा । staring (स्टेअ(रि)ङ) = घूरना peep (पीप्) = झाँक कर देखना । through (श्रू) = में से।

हिन्दी अनुवाद - उस तरफ एक पुरानी, धूलभरी खिड़की है। इस खिडकी के तीनों शीशे चटके हए हैं। प्रत्येक बार जब मैं उधर से गुजरता हूँ मैं प्रायः यह सोचता हूँ कि कोई मेरी ओर घूर रहा है। मैं एक दिन उस खिड़की में से झाँक कर देगा।

हिन्दी अनुवाद - मेरा भाई कहता है कि उस कमरे में एक भूत रहता है जो कि पुराने सड़े-गले फर्श बनाने के सामान के नीचे छिप जाता है। और यदि मैंने कभी अन्दर की ओर पैर रखने का प्रयास किया, वह बाहर कूद कर मेरा | सिर काट देगा। मगर मैं एक दिन उस कमरे में अन्दर जल्दी से झांक कर जरूर देखूगा।

हिन्दी अनुवाद - मैं जानता हूँ कि वहाँ पर वास्तव में कोई भूत नहीं रहता है। मेरा भाई झूठ बोलता है कि वह उस कमरे को अपनी गुफा अर्थात् गुप्त स्थान बनाकर रखना चाहता है। वहाँ पर कोई भी नहीं है जो हमेशा मेरी ओर घूरता है या अजीब सी आवाजें करता है। और वह मकड़ी भी अपने जाले से दूर चली गई है। मैं यह नहीं जानता कब वह अपने जाले से दूर गई। मैं एक दिन जल्दी ही, अवश्य ही उस कमरे में जाऊँगा। मगर अभी नहीं....।
