Question 1.
Using the number line write the integer which is:
(a) 3 more than 5
Answer:
3 more than 5, we start from 5 and move 3 steps to the right of5 to reach 8.

Thus, 3 more than 5 is 8.

(b) 5 more than - 5
Answer:
5 more than - 5, we start from - 5 and move 5 steps to the right of - 5 to get 0.

Thus, 5 more than - 5 to 0.

(c) 6 less than 2
Answer:
6 less than 2, we start from 2 and move 6 steps to the left of 2 to get - 4.

Thus, 6 less than 2 is - 4.

(d) 3 less than - 2
Answer:
3 less than - 2, we start from - 2 and move 3 steps to the left of - 2 to get - 5.

Thus, 3 less than - 2 is - 5.

Question 2.
Use number line and add the following integers:
(a) 9 + (- 6)
Answer:
9 + (- 6), we move 9 steps to the right of zero to reach at 9 then we move 6 steps to the left of 9 to get 3.

Thus, 9 + (- 6) = 3.

(b) 5 + (- 11)
Answer:
5 + (- 11), first we move 5 steps to the right of zero to obtain a number 5, then move 11 steps to the left of 5 to get - 6.

Thus, 5 + (- 11) = - 6.

(c) (- 1) + (- 7)
Answer:
(- 1) + (- 7), first we move 1 step to the left of 0 to get - 1 then again move 7 steps to the left of - 1 to reach at - 8.

Thus, (- 1) + (- 7) = - 8.

(d) (- 5) + 10
Answer:
(- 5) + 10, first we move 5 steps to the left of 0 to reach at - 5 then move 10 steps right of - 5 to reach at 5.

Thus, (- 5) + 10 = 5.

(e) (- 1) + (- 2) + (- 3)
Answer:
(- 1) + (- 2) + (- 3), first we move 1 step left to the zero to reach at - 1 then we move 2 steps left of - 1 to reach - 3. Again we move 3 steps to the left of - 3 and reach at - 6.

Thus, (- 1) + (- 2) + (- 3) = - 6

(f) (- 2) + 8 + (- 4)
Answer:
(- 2) + 8 + (- 4), first we move 2 steps left of 0 to reach at - 2. Then, we move 8 steps to the right of - 2 and reach at 6. Again from 6, we move 4 steps to the left of 6 and reach at 2, as shown in the figure :

Thus, (- 2) + 8 + (-4) = 2

Question 3.
Add without using number line :
(a) 11 + (- 7)
Answer:
11 + (- 7) = 7 + 4 + (- 7)
= 7 + (-7) + 4 = 0 + 4
= 4 {∵ 7 + (- 7) = 0}

(b) (- 13) + (+ 18)
Answer:
(- 13) + (+ 18)
= (- 13) + (+ 13) +(+5)
= 0 + (+ 5) = 5 {∵ (- 13) + (+ 13) = 0}

(c) (-10) + (+ 19)
Answer:
(- 10) + (+ 19)
= (- 10) + (+ 10) + (+ 9)
= 0 + (+ 9) = 9
{∵ (- 10) + (+ 10) = 0}

(d) (- 250) + (+ 150)
Answer:
(- 250) + (+ 150)
= (-100) + (-150) + (+ 150)
= (- 100) + 0 = - 100
{∵ (-150) + (+ 150) = 0}

(e) (- 380) + (- 270)
Answer:
(- 380) + (- 270)
= - (380 + 270) = - 650

(f) (- 217) + (- 100)
Answer:
(- 217) + (- 100)
= - (217 + 100) = - 317

Question 4.
Find the sum of:
(a) 137 and - 354
Answer:
137 and -354
= 137+ (-354)
= 137 + (- 137) + (- 217)
= 0 + (- 217) = - 217 {∵ 137 + (-137) = 0}

(b) - 52 and 52
Answer:
- 52 and 52
∵ Given integers are opposite of each other.
= - 52 + 52 = 0

(c) - 312, 39 and 192
Answer:
- 312, 39 and 192
= - 312 + 39 + 192
= - 312 + 231
= (- 231) + (- 81) + 231
= (- 231) + (+ 231) + (- 81)
= 0 + (- 81) = - 81 {∵ (- 231) + (+ 231) = 0}

(d) - 50, - 200 and 300
Answer:
- 50, - 200 and 300
= - 50 + (- 200) + 300 = (-250)+ 300
= (- 250) + (+ 250) + (+ 50)
= 0 + 50 = 50 {∵(- 250)+ (+ 250) = 0}

Question 5.
Find the sum:
(a) (- 7) + (- 9) + 4 + 16
Answer:
(- 7) + (- 9) + 4 + 16
= - 7 - 9 + 4 + 16
{∵ (-16) + (+16) = 0}
= -16 + 20
= (- 16) + (+ 16) + 4
= 0 + 4 = 4

(b) (37) +(- 2) + (- 65) +(- 8)
Answer:
(37) + (- 2) + (- 65) + (- 8)
= 37 - 2 - 65 - 8
= 37 + (- 75)
= 37 + (- 37) + (- 38)
= 0 + (- 38) = - 38
{∵ 37 + (- 37) = 0}
