• Articles : a, an, the. इनका वर्गीकरण इस प्रकार है

1. Indefinite Article-a तथा an ये दो Indefinite Articles होते हैं। Indefinite का अर्थ होता है-अनिश्चित। ये किसी निश्चित वस्तु अथवा व्यक्ति का बोध नहीं कराते। जैसे-a boy-एक लड़का-लड़का कोई भी हो सकता है।

2. Definite Article-the' Definite Article होता है। 
Definite का अर्थ होता हैनिश्चित'। यह किसी निश्चित व्यक्ति अथवा निश्चित वस्तु का बोध कराता है। जैसे I saw a boy. The boy was good.
मैंने एक लड़के को देखा। (लड़का कोई भी हो सकता है, किसी विशेष लडके को नहीं देखा। वह लड़का (The boy, अर्थात् विशेष लड़का जिसे मैंने देखा) अच्छा था।

'A' के प्रयोग की दशाएँ

1. Noun - Singular हो। 
2. Noun - Countable हो।
3. उस जाति के समस्त प्राणियों अथवा वस्तुओं का बोध कराये।
4. व्यंजन की ध्वनि हो। जैसे-a dog, a book, a useful book, a taxi  

An' के प्रयोग की दशाएँ -

1. Noun - Singular हो। 
2. Noun -Countable हो।
3. अंग्रेजी का शब्द यदि पाँच अक्षरों (a, e, i, o, u) से प्रारम्भ होता हो तथा उसकी ध्वनि, यदि हिन्दी के स्वर (अ, आ, इ, ई, उ, ऊ, ए, ऐ, ओ, औ......) से निकले तो an article आयेगा। दूसरे शब्दों में, an स्वर की ध्वनि पर लगता है। Consonant से प्रारम्भ होने वाले शब्द की भी ध्वनि

यदि स्वर से निकले तो an लगेगा। जैसे - 
an apple, an elephant, an hour, an idea.

The Article का प्रयोग 

'The' Article का प्रयोग निम्न दशाओं में होता है

Rule: 4. आकाश और आकाश की चीजों के नाम के पहलेthe sky

Rule: 5. पृथ्वी तथा संसार के पहले
the earth 
the world 

Rule: 6. दिशाओं के नाम के पहले
the East 
the North
the West 
the South 

Rule: 7. नदियों के नाम के पहले
the Ganga 
the Jamuna 

Rule: 8. ऐतिहासिक भवनों के नाम के पहले
the Taj Mahal 
the Red Fort 

Rule: 9. पर्वत-श्रेणियों के नाम के पहले the लगाओ; लेकिन पर्वत के नाम के पहले कोई article नहीं लगेगा

Rule :10. Superlative Degree के पहले 'The' लगेगा। (पहचान-शब्द के पहले most होता है, अथवा शब्द के अन्त में -est होता है।)
The most beautiful 
the best boy

Rule :11. 'Both' के तुरन्त बाद 'the' article लगेगा।
Both the pairs are white. 

Rule:12. यदि एक ही शब्द, उसी अवतरण में, उसी व्यक्ति अथवा वस्तु के लिए दुबारा प्रयोग में आये तो पहली बार आवश्यकतानुसार a अथवा an का प्रयोग होगा, लेकिन दूसरी बार the का प्रयोग होगा। जैसे.
1. I saw a man. The man was old. 
2. A boy was weeping. The boy was hungry. 
3. He found a box. The box was heavy. 
4. I have a pen. The pen is beautiful. 

Rule : 13. church, market, school, college, hospital, prison, bed के पूर्व Definite Article 'The' नहीं लगाते, यदि इनका प्रयोग उसी कार्य के लिए किया जाये जिसके लिए वे बने हों। जैसे-church में प्रार्थना के लिए जाने पर, market में खरीदारी करने के लिए जाने पर, school, college में पढ़ने के लिए जाने पर, hospital में इलाज के लिए जाने पर, prison में सजा भोगने के लिए जाने पर तथा bed पर सोने के लिए जाने पर इन शब्दों के पूर्व Definite Article 'The' नहीं लगता है। जैसे
1. Ramesh goes to school. (पढ़ने के लिए) 
2. My mother is ill and going to hospital. (इलाज के लिए) 
3. The thief has been sent to prison. (सजा भोगने के लिए) 
4. I go to bed late at night. (सोने के लिए) 
5. John goes to church every Sunday.

(प्रार्थना के लिए) लेकिन यदि इनका प्रयोग दूसरे कार्य के लिए हो तो Definite Article The' लगाते हैं, जैसे
1. Suresh is going to the school to enquire about the progress of his son. 
2. My mother is going to the hospital to see her friend.

Article का निषेध (अर्थात् कोई Articles नहीं लगेगा) 

Rule: 1. व्यक्ति , शहर व देश के नाम के पहले कोई Article नहीं लगेगा

विशेष नोट-यदि उपर्युक्त का प्रयोग 'विशेष' के भाव में किया गया है तो इनके पहले the आयेगा।
