परिभाषा - Adjective (विशेषण) वह शब्द होता है जो किसी संज्ञा (Noun) के बारे में अतिरिक्त सूचना देता है। जैसे
1. Walar is an important dance of Garasia tribe.
2. Ghoomar dancers display beautiful movements of the body.
यहाँ शब्द 'important' तथा 'beautiful' हमें 'dance' तथा 'movements' के बारे में अतिरिक्त सूचना देते हैं। अतः इन शब्दों को विशेषण (Adjectives) कहते हैं।
Degrees of Adjectives
Adjectives की तीन degrees होती हैं Positive, Comparative तथा Superlativel आपकी पाठ्यपुस्तक में Positive तथा Comparative degrees को ही शामिल किया गया है। अत: यहाँ केवल इन्हें ही समझाया जा रहा है।
Examples:
Positive Degree -- Comparative Degree
1. bold girl -- bolder than Preeti
2. brave boy -- braver than Prem
3. clever man -- cleverer than Hari
4. happy person -- happier than Shiv
5. big house -- bigger than Ram's
6. beautiful garden -- more beautiful than Ram's
(i) Positive Degree yeh original adjective (मूल विशेषण) होता है।
(ii) Comparative Degree
(a) तब बनती है जब हम Positive Degree में -er जोड़ते हैं या | इसके (Positive Degree के) पहले more लगाते हैं। तुलना करने के लिए इसके बाद than का प्रयोग करते हैं।
(b) जब Positive Degree के अन्त में 'y' आता है तथा y से पूर्व consonant (व्यंजन) होता है तब y को '1' में परिवर्तित कर व '-er' लगाकर . comparative बनाते हैं।
(c) एक syllable वाले adjective का अन्तिम अक्षर 'एक ही consonant' हो व इसके पूर्व short vowel sound हो तो comparative बनाने के लिए er जोड़ने से पूर्व इस अंतिम अक्षर को double कर देते हैं।
(d) दो syllables से अधिक वाले adjectives के आगे more लगाकर comparative बनाते हैं।
