→ There are more than five thousand towns and twenty seven big cities in India. More than a million people living in big cities.

→ Working on the Street: There are almost one crore ‘street vendors’ in the country working in urban areas. In a survey of Ahmedabad city it was found that 12 per cent of all the workers in the city were people working on the street. Those who work on the roads are mainly vegetable sellers, flower sellers, newspaper sellers, cobblers, barbers, seller of small plastic things on the wheels, cycle-rickshaw puller etc.

→ People working on the street sell things or repair them or provide a sen ice. They work on their even. They are not employed by anyone. Their shops are usually temporary. They may also use their own carts or simply a plastic sheet spread on the pavement.

→ For these, it is suggested that some areas in cities should be fixed for those selling goods on footpaths and trails, so that they can eliminate the inconvenience caused by the traffic and transportation of common people and they can also get a convenient place.

→ In the Market: In the market, there were rows and rows of shops selling sweets, toys, clothes, footwear, utensils, electronic goods, etc. There was a dentist’s clinic and a new garment showroom. For the showroom, they buy things from different places. We get some dress items from foreign countries, too. We advertise to run the showroom properly.

→ In the market, the shops may be small or large alid they sell different things. Most business persons manage their own shops or business and employ a number of other workers as supervisors and helpers. This market also has small offices and shops that provide services, such as banks, courier services etc.

→ Labour Chowk: There is a factory for sewing clothes in the city. “Labour chowk” is near factory, where daily wage labourer gather and work as helpers to masons. Some find work and some do not. Amongst these labourers are masons who build building, labourers who work at normal daily wages.

→ Factory: There were different departments of working in the factory. People working in a small room on sewing machines and the factory was making summer clothes for people in foreign countries like U.S.A., U.K., Germany and the Netherlands.

→ People here work for six days a week and a normal working day begins at 9 a.m. and finishes only by 10 p.m. For about three or four months in the year, there is no work for them. In this way their jobs are temporary.

→ In the office area: In the city, there is an office of a marketing manager that manufacturer biscuits and superwises the work of 50 salespersons who travel to different parts of the city. They get orders from shopkeepers and collect payments from them. Marketing manager gets a regular salary and is a permanent worker.
