→ The staple food of people living here is meat and milk products like cheese and butter. Goats, sheep and dzos (yak-cows) are domesticated. It was considered a good trade route as it had many passes through which caravans travelled to what is called Tibet at present.

→ These caravans carried textiles and spices, raw silk and carpets. Buddhism reached Tibet via Ladakh. Islam was introduced in this region more than four hundred years ago and there is a significant Muslim population here.

→ Unity in diversity:

  • India is a land where unity and diversity go hand in hand. A beautiful example of unity in diversity can be found in our struggle for freedom. The British ruled India for nearly two hundered years. The people of India belong to all religions, castes, regions and races, came together to fight against the British rule and eventually won freedom.
  • It was Pt. Nehru who wrote the book “The Discovery of India”. He coined the phrase “Unity in Diversity” to describe our country.
