His guards rode elephants, which were decorated with gold and silver ornaments. Some guards carried trees with live birds including a flock of trained parrots, circling around the head of the emperor. He was generally guarded with armed men for the protection from external threats.

The Maury an empire covered a large part of North and Central India. The empire was so large that different parts were ruled differently by the emperor with the help of the officials, spies and royal princes as governors.

The kingdom of Emperor Ashoka is called an empire due to following reasons:

  1. The kingdom of Emperor Ashoka was very vast. It was extended to most of India and to present-day Pakistan, Afghanistan.
  2. There were several cities in the empire. These included the capital Pataliputra, Taxila, and Ujjain. Taxila was a gateway to the northwest, including Central Asia, while Ujjain lay on the route from north to south India. Merchants, officials and crafts persons probably lived in these cities.
  3. In other areas there were villages of farmers and herders.
  4. In some areas such as central India, there were forests where people gathered forest produce and hunted animals for food.
  5. People in different parts of the empire spoke different languages. They probably ate different kinds of food, and wore different kinds of clothes as well.
  6. Due to being a very large state, its different parts were ruled differently. Therefore, due to such a huge state, it was called an empire.
