किसी शब्द के आरम्भ में लगा वह अक्षर या अक्षर समूह जिससे शब्द का अर्थ बदल जाता है उसे prefix या पूर्व सर्ग कहा जाता है। उदाहरण के लिए un शब्द को अगर do के साथ लगा दें तो वह undo हो जाएगा। जिसका अर्थ मिटाना हो जाता है।
