II. Irony is when we say one thing but mean another, usually the opposite of what we say. When someone makes a mistake and you say, 'Oh! that was clever!', that is irony. You're saying 'clever' to mean 'not clever'.

Dictionary Use
A word can mean different things in different contexts. Look at these three sentences :

Yesterday when I was packing my bag to leave the house, an intruder broke into my house. He resembled me in build and appearance except for specs and his fleshy clothes. He pointed a gun at me and started talking. He told me that he wanted to kill me and then impersonate me. He did not kill me immediately for he wanted to know more about me. That gave me time to fabricate a story.
I told him that there was no use to kill and impersonate me as I, myself was a murderer trying to run away from the police. That is why I was leaving the house. I added that one of my men had been arrested and he told the police everything about me. To convince him I showed him my bag. It had a disguise suit that I was taking for the rehearsal. He half believed me. I offered to help him to escape with me in my car.
He still doubted me. I asked him to look out and check himself if the man posted by me to inform me about the arrival of police was there or not. I opened the door at the cupboard. As he looked in it, I pushed him in the cupboard. His revolver fell off his hand. I locked him in the cupboard and called the police to arrest him. That's how I outwitted him.
Question 2.
Enact the play in the class. Pay special attention to words given in italics before a dialogue. These words will tell you whether the dialogue has to be said in a happy, a sarcastic or ironic tone and how the characters move and what they do as they speak. Read these carefully before you enact the play.

Intruder is a criminal who breaks into houses and shops. He steals jewels. He has killed a policeman and is trying to save himself. He has thought of a clever plan. He wants to go about disguised as Gerrard because he resembles him closely. So he wants to kill Gerrard. He belongs to a class of people who are not intelligent. He comes in like a lion. Playwright Outwits Criminal
Gerrard is a playwright. He lives alone in a lonely cottage. One day, he was about to leave with his bag containing disguise outfit, false moustache, beard etc. Suddenly a man comes in. He has a revolver in his hand. Gerrard is surprised but keeps his cool. The intruder resembles Gerrard. The intruder tells him that he has come to kill him.
But he does not shoot at Gerrard at once. He has a motive. He appears to have found out much about Gerrard and his habits. But he wants to know more. The intruder has killed a policeman, and he hopes to go about unsuspected as Gerrard. Gerrard invents a story to qutwit the intruder.
He tells the intruder that his plan cannot succeed. He says that he too has murdered somebody and the police is expected to arrive soon. The intruder realises that it is no use killing Gerrard. He is sure to be hanged. He looks into Gerrard's bag.
This convinces him that Gerrard was speaking the truth. He agrees to escape with Gerrard in his car. Gerrard leads him to a cupboard. The stupid intruder takes it for the exit. As he steps into it. Gerrard gives him a push. His revolver falls to the floor. Gerrard locks him in the cupboard and calls the police.

To escape arrest, I am leaving this place. They go to the garage. Gerrard opens the door. As the intruder goes near it, he pushes him in the cupboard and lock him up.

How does the play 'If I Were You' open?
Answer:
The play "If I Were You' opens with a melodrama. Gerrard was talking on phone. After talks, he goes to the divan and starts packing a travelling bag. Whilst he is thus engaged, another man, similar in build to Gerrard enters from the right silentlyrevolver in hand. He bumps accidentally against the table. Gerrard pleasantly asked who he was. The intruder warns him to put the hands up. And the dialogue remain continue.

The title “If I Were You' is appropriate and suggestive. The author has created two characters quite similar in looks. One of them tries to avoid the police by taking on the other's identity after killing him. The other one outwitted him. The method the other chooses is also of taking on other's identity. As both tried to take on each other's identity, it became a case of double impersonation. Thus, the title is justified.

जेरेंड : तुम्हारा विचार मुझे मार कर जेरेंड बन कर पुलिस को धोखा देना है।
घुसपैठिया : हाँ, मुझे यह विचार अच्छा लगा!
जेरॅड : पर क्या आपको विश्वास है कि यह विचार तुम्हारी सहायता करेगा?
घुसपैठिया : अब सुनो। मैंने यह योजना बनाई है। मैं शहर में कार्य करता था। गड़बड़ हो गई तथा मैंने एक पुलिस वाले की हत्या कर दी। उसके पश्चात् मैंने बचने के अतिरिक्त कुछ नहीं किया।
जेरॅड : और बचना, तुम्हें यहाँ ले आया।
घुसपैठिया : यह मुझे एल्सबरी ले आया। वहीं मैंने तुम्हें कार में देखा। दो और लोगों ने तुम्हें देखा और.. बातें करने लगे। मैंने सुना। ऐसा प्रतीत होता है कि तुम एक विचित्र रहस्यमय व्यक्ति हो।
जेरड : एक रहस्य जो मैं समझाना चाहता हूँ।
घुसपैठिया : (उसकी अवहेलना करते हुए) तुम अपने आदेश फोन पर देते हो तथा कभी-कभी तुमअचानक चले जाते हो तथा अचानक आ जाते हो। यही काममैं करना चाहता हूँ। तुम्हारे बारे में सुनना मेरे लिए उत्तम मोड़ था। : स्पष्टतः तुममें इतनी समझ है कि मुझसे यह पूछो कि मैंने रहस्य का चोगा क्यों पहन रखा जेरॅड

कठिन शब्दार्थ : concerned (कन्सन्ड्) = सम्बन्धित होना, bullets (बुलिट्स) = गोलियाँ, unfortunately (अन्फॉचनट्लि) = दुर्भाग्यवश, disguise outfit (डिस्गाइज् आउट्फिट) = वेश बदलने के वस्त्र, moustaches (मस्टाश्ज) = मूंछे, musingly (म्यू ड्लि ) = सोचते हुए।

जेरेंड : यह तुम्हारे लिए एक बड़ा आश्चर्य है। मैंने तुम्हें कहा था कि तुम मुझे नहीं मारोगे तथा मैं ठीक था। तुम यह क्यों सोचते हो कि आज मैं यहाँ हूँ तथा कल नहीं होऊँगा और कभी व्यापारी लोगों से नहीं मिलूँगा। तुम कहते हो कि मेरी आदतें तुम्हारे और अनुकूल होंगी। तुम बदमाश हो। क्या तुम मुझे रविवार के स्कूल का अध्यापक समझते हो? मेरे विचार से खेल खत्म हो चुका है। मेरे साथ गड़बड़ हो गई थी। मैंने गोलियों का प्रयोग किया और मैं बच निकला। दुर्भाग्यवश मेरा एक आदमी पकड़ा गया तथा उन्हें वह चीजें मिल गईं जिन्हें उस मूर्ख को जला देना चाहिए था। आज मैं मुसीबत की इन्तजार में हूँ। भागने के लिए मेरा बैग तैयार है। यह वहाँ पड़ा है।
घुसपैठिया : बैग तो यह है पर यह भी पिस्तौल है। यह सब क्या है?
जेरॅड. : यह वेश बदलने का सामान है। नकली मूंछे तथा कई कुछ। क्या तुम्हें अब विश्वास हो गया है।
घुसपैठिया : (सोचते हुए) मुझे नहीं पता।
जेरड : भगवान के लिए अपना गड़बड़ दिमाग ठीक करो तथा आओ हम चलें। कार में मेरे साथ आओ। मैं तुम्हारा प्रयोग कर सकता हूँ। यदि तुम्हें यह चालाक योजना लगे तो तुम कार मेंहोंगे तथा तुम्हारे पास पिस्तौल भी होगी।
घुसपैठिया : हो सकता है कि तुम ठीक कहते हो।
जेरॅड : तो समय नष्ट मत करो। (जाकर अपना टोप व बैग उठाता है)
घुसपैठिया : बॉस सावधान रहना, मैं तुम्हें देख रहा हूँ।
जेरॅड : मैंने एक व्यक्ति को सड़क पर तैनात कर रखा है। यदि उसने पुलिस को देखा तो वह टेलीफोन कर देगा। परन्तु मैं जाना नहीं चाहता (टेलीफोन की घण्टी बजती है) आओ, पुलिस हमारा पीछा कर रही है। यहाँ से होकर सीधे गैराज चलें।
7. Intruder : How do.......... Public Bar.
कठिन शब्दार्थ : slams (स्लैम्ज) = जोर से बन्द करना, rattle (रैट्ल) = खड़काना, props (प्रॉप्स) = नाटक के लिए कपड़े आदि, amusing (अम्यूज्ङ्) = मनोरंजक, probably (प्रॉबब्लि) = शायद।
हिन्दी अनुवाद :
घुसपैठिया : मैं कैसे जानूँ कि तुम सच बोल रहे हो।
जेरॅड : ओह, मूर्ख मत बनो, स्वयं देख लो।।
(जेरेड दरवाजा खोल कर एक तरफ हटता है। घुसपैठिया देखने के लिए आगे की ओर
झुकता है। उसकी एक साइड जेरेंड की ओर है पर पिस्तौल तैयार है। जैसे ही वह मुँह फेरता है, जेरॅड उसे अलमारी में धक्का देता है तथा उसके हाथ से पिस्तौल गिर जाती है। वह जोर से दरवाजा बन्द कर देता है। पिस्तौल उठा कर वह टेलीफोन के पास जाता है। वहाँ पर वह अलमारी की ओर पिस्तौल का निशाना बाँधे खड़ा होता है।)
घुसपैठिया : (दरवाजा खड़काता है और चिल्लाता है), "मुझे यहाँ से निकालो।"
जेरॅड : हैलो। हाँ, बोल रहा हूँ। क्षमा करें मैं आपको अभ्यास के लिए सहायता नहीं कर सकता।
