Nawab of Awadh and Bengal tried to do away with jagirdari system because of the following reasons:

  1. They wanted to reduce the influence of the Mughals in their kingdom.
  2. They were suspicious of this system.
  3. They wanted to remove Jagirdari and introduce Ijaradari system.
  4. They wanted to receive land against loans and by this they expanded their influence.
  5. The Jagirdars, appointed at the time of Mughals were corrupt, so to reduce the size of jagirs they appointed their own loyal servants.

How were the Sikhs organised in the eighteenth century?
Answer: 
In eighteenth century, Sikhs organised themselves into a number of bands called Jathas, later called Misls. Their combined forces were known as Dal Khalsa. The Sikhs under the Khalsa declared their sovereign rule and extended their territories from Indus to Yamuna. The entire body used to meet at Amritsar at the time of Baisakhi and Diwali to take collective decision. Guru Gobind Singh instituted Khalsa that helped the Sikhs to fight battles.

Marathas wanted to expand beyond Deccan because of the following reasons:

After becoming governor of Deccan Asaf Jah took some important steps to strengthen his position. The following policies were adopted:

  1. He brought skilled soldiers and administrators from northern India who welcomed the new opportunities in the south.
  2. He appointed mansabdars and granted jagirs.
  3. He worked independently without seeking any direction from the Mughal Emperor. He gathered power by taking advantage of the turmoil in the Deccan.
