Discuss views of gender difference in Indian society in the present time.

Gender differences forms found in Indian society –

1. Division of labour on gender basis – Right from the beginning the children are ingrained that the girls are to do all household works such as cooking, cleaning utensils, washing clothes etc. In the villages, the women and the girls fetch water from tube-wells, tanks, firewood from forests etc. At the same time they work in the fields – sowing the seeds, weeding, harvesting, taking care of farm animals etc. Contribution of women in this field is underestimated. They are even paid lesser amount than men.

2. Inequalities of opportunities for Education and Work – The number of literate women is lesser than men. Although the number of girls going to school has increased in recent years. In Rajasthan, male literacy was 79.20% whereas female literacy was 52.10%. Many girls drop out school because of poverty, lack of educational facilities etc.

This is true for the girls coming from deprived sections of the society, tribal and Muslim communities. Several social values and conservative belief mistakingly link gender difference to the genetic difference and that is why contribution of women and girls in the society is undermined. As a result, they have to be deprived of many opportunities in various fields. Due to efforts made by the govt., women have become active at the social level and things are changing gradually. Hence women are participating almost every field of work.

3. Difference in community co-participation – There is a larger difference in co-participation of men and women at community level. Women’s contribution in political as well as public life is negligible. Women are deprived of leadership roles in community programmes.
