Answer: 
He wanted to control the coasts because India had very active and good trade relations with foreign contries. As a result, many kings controlled the river valleys and the coasts and became rich and powerful. Due to these reasons, he also sent his armies to the western, southern and eastern coasts to take control of the trade activities.

It would have been difficult to use carts along the silk route because :

  1. The route was long and dangerous through roads, deserts and mountains.
  2. Kings, rulers and other chiefs living along the route often demanded payments for allowing traders to pass through.
  3. Many traders were often attacked by robbers.

Silk was also sent from China by sea. What do you think would have been the advantages and problems in transporting silk by sea?

Advantages:

  1. The route was a shorter route.
  2. The rulers could not demand taxes.

Disadvantages:

  1. The ships could be attacked by pirates.
  2. Sometime weather can be rough at sea and as a result the ships can be lost or damaged.

Why do you think Fa Xian did not want to throw away his books and statues ?
Answer: 
Fa Xian did not want to throw the books and statues of Buddha because he wanted to take them China and to translate them in their native language so that others could also read them. They could follow the teachings of Buddha. Statues that would let the people imagine how Buddha looked and they were very valuable for him.

List the reasons why Xuan Zang wanted to study in Nalanda.
Answer: 
Xuan Zang wanted to study in Nalanda (Bihar) because of its high standards. According to him, “The teachers are men of the highest ability and talent. They follow the teachings of the Buddha in all sincerity . The rules of the monastery are strict, and everyone has to follow them. Discussions are held throughout the day, and the old and the young mutually help one another. Learned men from different cities come here to settle their doubts. The gatekeeper asks new entrants difficult questions. They are allowed to enter only after they have been able to answer these. Seven or eight out of every ten are not able to answer.”

Why did kings want to control the silk route?
Answer: 
Many kings wanted to control the silk route so that they could be benefitted from taxes, tributes and gift brought by traders. In return, they protected the traders who passed through their kingdoms from the attacks by robbers.

What were the main features of Bhakti?
Answer: 
The main features of Bhakti are as follows: 
(a) Devotion-Bhakti lays stress on devotion and worship of Gods and Goddesses rather than performing rituals and sacrifices.

(b) Equality-Anybody whether rich or poor, low or high caste, man or women could follow the path of bhakti.

(c) Spiritual Images: According to the path of bhakti, if a person worship the chosen deity with a pure heart, the deity will appear in the form in which the person may desire. Deity could be imagined in the form of human being, lion, tree etc. and when this idea was accepted then artists made images of these deities. The idea of bhakti is given in the Bhagavad Gita. The deities, which were worshipped through bhakti included Gods like Shiva, Vishnu and Goddesses such as Durga. This form of worship is an important feature of Hinduism.

Discuss the reasons why the Chinese pilgrims came to India.
Answer: 
The Chinese pilgrims came to India to visit the important sites related to Buddhism. They came to visit places associated with the life of the Buddha as well as famous monasteries. The best-known of these were Fa Xian, Xuan Zang, and I-Qing. Xuan Zang and other pilgrims spent time studying in Nalanda (Bihar), the most famous Buddhist monastery of that period.

Why do you think ordinary people were attracted to Bhakti?
Answer: 
Ordinary people attracted to Bhakti because of the following reasons:

  1. Bhakti saints used common languages and attractive ways to spread the idea of Bhakti.
  2. In Bhakti, anybody either low or high caste, rich or poor all were considered equal.
  3. All can follow the path of Bhakti.
  4. To show devotion towards their chosen deity, people visit to temples while it was not possible in the vedic period as caste system prevailed in the society.
