1. The Sangha mentioned in Chapter 5 was a form of government in Vaishali but Sangha mentioned in Chapter 6 was for people who followed Buddhism and left their homes to stay together.
2. The people in Sangha as mentioned in Chapter 5 where rich people like kings and traders but people in Sangha described in Chapter 6 were those who left their homes to lead simple life. The similarity is that both the Sanghas were associations or organizations of people.

Question 1. 
In what way was the system of ashramas different from life in the sangha? What are the varnas mentioned here? Were all four varnas allowed to participate in the system of ashramas?
Answer: 
At the time when Jainism and Buddhism were becoming popular, brahmins developed the system of ashramas. Here, the world ashrama does not mean a place where people live and meditate. Instead, it is used for a stage of life.

Four ashramas were recognized: Brahmacharya, Grihastha, Vanaprastha and Sannyasa. Brahmin, Kshatriya and Vaishya men were expected to lead simple lives and study the Vedas during the early years of their life (Brahmacharya). 

Then they had to marry and live as householders (Grihastha). Then, they had to live in the forest and meditate (Vanaprastha). Finally, they had to give up everything and become Sannyasis. The system of ashramas allowed men to spend some part of their lives in meditation.

Generally, women were not allowed to study the Vedas, and they had to follow the ashramas chosen by their husbands. The Sangha was an association of those people who left their homes to know the truth. The people who joined the Sangha had to follow some rules.

She was going on a school trip to Varanasi (in Uttar Pradesh) which is the holiest Buddhist place. Anagha’s mother wanted her to know the story of the Buddha as the story would throw light on the Buddha’s simple life as well as oh his teachings and ideas.

Do you think it would have been easy for slaves to join the sangha? Give reasons for your answer.
Answer: 
Yes, according to me it would have been easy for slaves to join the sangha because Buddha was in the favour of questioning the quality of all human beings. By taking permission from their masters, they could join the sangha. Some slaves were very good in their work and they served the people of sanghas in many ways.
