Why do archaeologists think that many people who lived in Mehrgarh were hunters to start with and that herding become more important later?

Archaeologists found evidences of the skeleton and bones of different animals like deer, pigs, sheep, cattle and goat. But they found these evidences at different levels. Bones of deer and pigs were found in the earliest level. In the later level, they found bones of sheep and goat. In still later level, cattle bones were found. This shows that people of Mehrgarh were hunters but herding became more important for them.

Why did the hunter-gatherers travel from place to place? In what ways are these similar to/different from the reasons for which we travel today?
Answer: 
Hunter-gatherers travelled from place to place due to the following reasons:
(i) In search of food s The early man was a food gatherer, not a food producer. After using all the edible plants of a particular area, they moved to another area where they could find more plant and animal resources.

(ii) Animal’s Movement:
Animals move from one place to another in search of food, so hunter-gatherers also had to move in search of these animals for hunting.

(iii) Difference in Season: 
As different plants and trees bear fruits in different seasons. So, they moved from place to place in search of different kinds of plants products.

(iv) Search for water:
Water is found in rivers, lakes etc. Some rivers are perennial while some are seasonal. So people had to move to different places in dry season in search of water.

(v) Sometimes, people may have to meet their relatives and friends.
But, now a days we travel for different purposes such as we move to get better employment opportunities, education, to expand our business and also to spend holidays. Similarity may be seen such as we also move in search of livelihood as the primitive man moved. Sometimes we also move due to adverse climatic conditions as the primitive man moved to save himself from adverse climatic conditions.

List three ways in which hunter-gatherers used fire? Would you use fire for any of these purposes today? 
Answer:
Hunter-gatherers used fire for the following purposes:

  2. To scare away wild animals, 
  3. To get warmth in winters.
