Samudragupta treated the rulers of Aryavarta and Dakshinapatha? Can you suggest any reasons for this difference?
Answer: 
In Aryavarta, there were nine rulers who were uprooted and their kingdoms were made a part of Samudragupta’s empire. In Dakshinapatha, there were twelve rulers. They surrendered to Samudragupta after being defeated and he then allowed them to rule again. Samudragupta adopted different policies because Dakshinapatha was far away from his capital; since the means of transport were primitive, it was difficult to keep them under control.

Today, the poor man would not be treated in this manner. He will be taken to the court to give his verdict.

The king travelled, with an enormous amount of equipments. Apart from weapons, there were things of daily use such as pots, perns, furniture, golden footstools, food, including animals such as goat, deer, rabbits, vegetables, spices, carried on carts or loaded on to pack animals such as camels and elephants. This huge army was accompanied by musicians beating drumps, and others playing horns and trumpets.

Villagers had to provide hospitality along the way. They came with gifts of curds, gur and flowers, and provided fodder for the animals. They also tried to meet the king, and place their complaints and petitions before him.

There were a number of new administrative arrangements that were significant for the empire. Earlier land was the source of revenue for the rulers’. Village was the basic unit of administration. The empire was divided into provinces. The following were the important officials of the provinces:

  2. Kumar-amatya-senior minister.
  3. Sandhi-vigrahika-minister of war and peace.
  4. Nagara-shreshthi-chief banker or merchant of the city.
