It has been turned towards west in the Berring Sea. In the Pacific Ocean it has been turned towards East in order to keep united different parts of groups of Fizi Island and New Zeland. Find out the time in India if it is 8.00 am at Greenwich (0° longitude).
Answer:
The standard time of our country has been decided on 88 1/2° East longitude. As this longitude is situated at 88 1/2° east from Greenwich, the time of our country will be calculated by adding 5 1/2° to the local time of the Greenwich time. If it is 8 AM at Greenwich line, it will be 1.30 PM in India.

  • Latitude lines are those lines which join equal points of latitudes. The line which joint equal longitudes is longitudinal line.
  • Latitude lines are drawn from East to West whereas longitude lines join North pole to South pole and these lines are drawn from North-South.
  • The number of latitudes is 180 from north to south whereas the number of longitudes are 360.
  • Latitudes determines position of North and South hemisphere whereas longitudes determine time and date.

Movements of the Earth – There are two kinds of earth’s movements:
1. Everyday Rotational Movement –
The earth rotates on its axis. As a top spins on its axis, similarly, our earth also rotates on its axis and completes one rotation in 24 hours. Because of this rotational movement of earth in 24 hours, one day has 24 hours. The rotation of earth gives us an easy measurement of calculating time and thus day and night occur. The physical and biological activities on earth are affected by its rotation.

2. Annual Revolution Movement –
The movement of earth on a fixed path around Sun is called Revolution. Earth completes its one revolution of the Sun in 365 days and 6 hours. Therefore one year has 365 days. Due to revolution of earth seasons are formed.

Answer:
Local The –
The time calculated by the position of the Sun is called the local time. The time of places on same longitude is always the same and from east to west on different longitudes it is different. In a country there can be many local timings.

Standard Time –
Every country has determined its standard time which is decided by the longitude passing through the centre of that country. The time on this line will be the standard time of that country.

We know that the earth gets light from the Sun. The side which faces the Sun has day and which is opposite to if has night. The earth forms an angle of 66 1/2° from the axis and its rotation point. Hence length of time in day and night changes.

What is solstice and equinox?
Answer:
When the sun rays fall directly on the tropic of Cancer or the tropic of Capricorn, it is called Solstice. Northern Solstice and Southern Solstice – On 21 June sun rays fall directly on the tropic of cancer. This is the longest day in the northern hemisphere and longest night in the Southern hemisphere. This is called northern solstice. On 22 December, sun rays fall directly on the tropic of Capricorn. The southern hemisphere has the longest day on 22 December while the northern hemisphere has the longest night. This is called southern solstice.

Northern and Southern Equinox –
On 21 March the sun rays fall directly on the equator. The day and night are of equal duration on the earth on this day. This situation is called the northern or spring equinox. On 23 September sun rays fall directly again on equator and again on this day and night are equal. It is called southern hemisphere. It is clear when the sun rays fall directly on the equator, it is called equinox.

What do you mean by local time and how is it found out?
Answer:
The time calculated by the position of the sun is called the local time. When the position of the sun is exactly perpendicular on our head that time will be 12 noon. The time of places on same longitude is always the same and from east to west on different longitudes it is different. So when we travel 1° east longitude, the time of 4 minutes is added to local time.

For every 1° distance from west to east and the time of 4 minutes is subtracted from the local time for every 1° distance from east to west. For e.g. suppose at 0° longitude the local time of a place is 8 o’clock and now if we move from that place towards east to 1° distance, then the local time of that place will be 8.04, while travelling 1° towards west, the local time will be 7.56 (8.00 – 04).

What is standard time? Why was its need felt and in what context its calculation is done?
Answer:
Every longitude has its own time. The time of the places will be determined by their longitudes. This will create a problem to know the fixed time of any country as many longitudinal meridians pass through that county. This will cause inconvenience to do a particular task in difference places at different times. To solve this problem, every country has determined its standard time which is decided by the longitude passing through the centre of that country.

The time on this line will be standard time of that country. The standard time is calculated with reference to Greenwich (situated at 0° longitude) for e.g., the standard time of our country has been decided on 881/2° east longitude. As this longitude is situated at 88 1/2° east from Greenwich time of our country, it will be calculated by adding 514 to the local time of the Greenwich time.

How does solar eclipse occur? Describe it with diagram.
Answer:
While revolving in their orbits, the earth and the moon take a position in which they come in a straight line with the Sun. At this position if the moon happens to come between the earth and the sun, the rays of sun are blocked by moon and they can’t reach the earth. The position is called the solar eclipse. The full solar eclipse can be seen in some parts of earth and partial solar eclipse in other parts of the earth. This position of solar eclipse can be shown by a diagram given below –

When the earth comes between the Sun and the Moon, the Sun rays are blocked by the earth and they do not fall on the moon. This position is called the Lunar Eclipse.

Earth has been divided into the following temperate zones on the basis of latitudes.
Answer:
1. Torrid Zone –
23 1/2° North latitude is called the Tropic of Cancer while 23 1/2° South latitude is called the tropic of Capricorn. This distance between the tropic of Cancer and the tropic of Capricorn is called Torrid Zone.

2. The Arctic Zone –
The Arctic and the Antarctic circles are situated at 66 1/2° north and 66 1/2° south respectively. It is called the Arctic Zone.

3. Cold Zone –
The angular distance between the Arctic Circle and the North Pole in the northern hemisphere and the distance between the Antarctic circle and the South Pole in the southern hemisphere is called the Cold Zone.
