Question 11.
A ball rolling on ground gradually slows down and comes to rest. Why?
A hail rolling on the ground gradually slows down and comes to rest because a force is applied on it by the surface in the opposite direction of its motion. This force is known as force of friction. Friction opposes the motion. This is the reason why a rolling ball on the ground gradually slows down.

When you stop paddling a bicycle, it automatically stops after some time. Why?
When we stop paddling a bicycle it stops after some time because it experiences a frictional force by the surface of the road in the opposite direction of its motion which opposes the motion. Thus the cycle stops.

Why does an object finally fall down when we throw it up?
The earth attracts every object towards itself because of which every object falls on it. This happens due to the gravitation of earth. The force with which the earth attracts the object towards it is called “gravitational force”.

Explain the effects of force with the help of examples.
Effects of force – Applying force has different effects on different objects indifferent ways. Following changes takes place an applying force.

1. The applied force may change the state of an object or it may bring an object from rest to motion. eg. A kick in football brings it in motion.
2. Applying force on moving object changes their speed. cg. A person is pulling a cart and another person is pushing it from back, the speed of the cart increases.
3. Force applied on a moving object can change its direction of motion, cg. A player in the game of football, hockey or cricket apply force to change the direction of the ball.
4. On applying force, the shape of an object changes. cg. Pressing inflated balloon, pressing a sponge. stretching a spring, stretching a rubber band etc. Thus we can say that force can bring the following effects on objects –

Friction opposes the motion of an object. Explain this with the help of an activity.
Friction opposes the motion of an object. It can he explained with the following activity. Take a glass marble, Roll it down the apparatus on a smooth surface. Note how far does it move before coming to rest. Now roll down the glass marble on the same apparatus hut on a rough surface. Again note how far does it move this time before coming to rest. We will find that the glass marble comes to rest earlier on the rough surface. If the surface is rough. then the frictional force will he less and the object moves faster. If the surface is rough, then the frictional force is more which opposes the motion and thus the speed of the object is less.

When an object moves on a surface, a force is applied to it by the surface in the opposite direction of the motion of the object. This force is known as the frictional force or just friction. Frictional force depends up of the surfaces coming in contact with each other. On smooth surface the frictional force is less that’s why it is difficult to walk on the surface hut rough surfaces have more frictional force that’s why it is easy to walk on such surfaces.
