Question 1.
How is Ausable different from other secret agents?
Answer:
Ausable doesn't appear to be active and agile as a secret agent is supposed to be because he is very fat. His accent is not proper. Though he speaks French and German passably, he has never altogether lost the American accent he has brought to Paris from Boston twenty years ago.

Answer:
Fowler is a young and romantic writer.
His first authentic thrill of the day is the sudden appearance of the other secret agent, Max with a small automatic pistol in his hand in Ausable's room.

Answer:

(Think About It)

Question 1.
“Ausable did not fit any description of a secret agent Fowler had ever read.” What do secret agents in books and films look like, in your opinion? Discuss in groups or in class some stories or movies featuring spies, detectives and secret agents, and compare their appearance with that of Ausable in this story. (You may mention characters from fiction in languages other than English. In English fiction you may have came across Sherlock Holmes, Hercule Poirot, or Miss Marple. Have you watched any movies featuring James Bond?)
Answer:
In my opinion secret agents in books and films appear to be quite mysterious, somewhat sinister and full of self-confidence with a versatile personality. They look to be smart and tall. They are prepared to take risks.

But Ausable is fat and sloppy. He depends more on his mental skills rather than physical skills in coping with critical situations of danger. Yes, I have watched two movies featuring James Bond. They are Quantum of Solace and Casino Royale.

Question 2.
How does Ausable manage to make Max believe that there is a balcony attached to his room? Look back at his detailed description of it. What makes it a convincing story?
Answer:
Ausable manages to make Max believe that there is a balcony attached to his room through his detailed convincing description about the same. He spins a tale around the balcony. Moreover his angry attitude towards the manager for paying no attention to his complaint and his statement . “This is the second time in a month that somebody jas got into my room through that nuisance of a balcony.”all these make his story of balcony look convincing and true.

Question 3.
Looking back at the story, when do you think Ausable thought up his plan for getting rid of Max. Do you think he had worked out his plan in detail right from the beginning? Or did he make up a plan taking advantage of events as they happened?
Answer:
I think Ausable made his plan for getting rid of Max when he saw him with a small automatic pistol in his hand in his room. He had threatened him to hand him over the very important report about new missiles which he was going to receive that night.
No, I don't think he had made his plan in detail right from the beginning. Yes, he actually made up a plan taking advantage of events as they happened.

(Talk About It)

Question 1.
In this story, Ausable shows great 'presence of mind' or the ability to think quickly and act calmly and wisely, in a situation of danger and surprise. Give examples from your own experience or narrate a story, which shows someone's presence of mind.
Answer:
Once I was passing through a forest. I was all alone. All of a sudden I saw a lion. I was utterly terrified. But my mind worked swiftly. I took a big, dried branch of a tree lying nearby. By chance I had a matchbox. I lighted the branch. When it started burning heavily, the lion got frightened and ran away. Thus, my presence of mind in a situation of danger and surprise saved my precious life.

Question 2.
Draw a character sketch of Ausable.
Answer:
Ausable spoke French and German passably. He had never lost the American accent completely. He brought this accent twenty years ago from Boston. He had great presence of mind. He has the ability to think quickly and act calmly and wisely in a situation of danger and surprise. He threatened Max that police was knocking at his door to know about him.

Question 3.
How can you say that Ausable had a great presence of mind?
Answer:
When Max, the rival agent, secretly entered into Ausable's room to obtain the secret report by force. He concocted a story of the existence of a balcony under the window of his room. Suddenly there was knock at the door and he told Max that it was police. He asked him to hide in balcony. Max jumped and fell down. This was his great presence of mind.

Question 4.
According to Ausable in which thought there was a drama?
Answer:
According to Ausable he was going to receive quite an important paper that night in his room. Several men and women had risked their lives for that paper. This was an important report concerning some new missiles. There was drama in that thought. Soon that paper well affect the course of history.

Question 5.
What is the meaning of the sentence "he was going to raise the devil with the management”?
Answer:
He said this sentence because that was the second time in a month that somebody had got into his room through the same balcony. The management had promised to block it off. But they hadn't done so till then. Ausable said this to make his story of balcony appear convincing and true. So that Max could believe that it was the way to an easy escape.

Question 6.
Why did Max scream shrilly when he dropped to the balcony?
Answer:
There was no balcony below the window of Ausable's room. It was an imaginary balcony about which Ausable informed Max so that he could get rid of him. And in order to save the important report about missiles from falling in Max's hands. Ausable’s room was on sixth and top floor. So he screamed because he fell from sixth to ground floor.

Question 7.
Write about the knocking of door incident in detail.
Answer:
When there was sudden knock at the door Max was very nervous. He warned Ausable to send the police away. Otherwise he would shoot and take his chances. Then the door knob turned. Max pushed with his left hand to free himself from the sill. Then he dropped in the balcony and he screamed shrilly.

Question 8.
Why did Fowler's face become white?
Answer:
Ausable informed Max that police was knocking at the door. Then Max threatened Ausable and Fowler that they should send the police away otherwise he would shoot them. But Ausable did not pay attention to Max's threaten. Then door knob turned. Max jumped into imaginary balcony and fell down. This sudden turn of events made Fowler's face white with fear.
