→ A census is an official enumeration of population done periodically.

→ In India, the first census was held in the year 1872. The first complete census, however, was taken in the year 1881. Since then, censuses have been held regularly every tenth year.

→ The population density of India in the year 2001 was 102.8 crore which is 16.7 per cent of the total population of the whole world. On March 2011 it stood at 121.06 crore, which account for 17.5 per cent of the world’s population and accounts for 2.4 per cent of the world’s area.

→ The age composition of a population refers to the number of people in different age groups in a country.

→ Sex ratio is defined as the number of females per 1000 males in the population. The 2011 Census data reveals that India’s sex ratio was 933 which has increased to 943 in the year 2011.
