Determiners

Meaning (अर्थ)-Determiner शब्द की उत्पत्ति determine शब्द से हुई है जिसका अर्थ है निश्चय करना। अतः वे शब्द जो किसी संज्ञा (Noun) अथवा संज्ञा समूह (Noun-group) की पहचान करने उसका अर्थ परिसीमन करने अथवा अर्थ निश्चित करने के लिए प्रयोग किये जाते हैं, Determiners कहलाते हैं। ये हमेशा संज्ञा (Noun) से पहले आते हैं। सर्वनाम (Pronoun) से पहले इनका प्रयोग नहीं होता है। साथ ही ये बतलाते हैं कि वह संज्ञा एकवचन है अथवा बहुवचन, गणनीय है अथवा अगणनीय।।

Usages Of Determiners  

1. Articles : a, an, the
(A) a/an का प्रयोग निम्न अर्थों में होता है

(i) ऐसे words के पहले 'a' का प्रयोग होता है जो consonant sound से आरम्भ होते हैं
(a) She is a noble lady. 
(b) It's a fine weather today. 
(c) She always wears a uniform in school. 
(d) She is a European lady.
(e) Do you have a one rupee note ? 

(ii) ऐसे words के पहले 'an' का प्रयोग होता है, जो vowel sound से आरम्भ होते हैं
(a) She eats an apple everyday. 
(b) Srilanka is an island. 
(c) An uncle told me your address.
(d) She is an engineer.
(e) She gave an orange to me.

(iii) an' का प्रयोग ऐसे words के पहले करें जो mute 'h' से आरम्भ होते हैं
(a) He came half an hour earlier. 
(b) She was appointed an honorary secretary 
(c) She is an heiress of millions of rupees.
(d) He is an honourable member of this club. 

(iv) an का प्रयोग ऐसे individual letters से पहले करें जो vowel sound से आरम्भ होते हैं
(a) It is an L-plate. 
(b) She is an M.Sc.
(c) Have you sent an SOS ?
(d) Correct the spelling by using an 'x' at the appropriate place. 

(B) a / an के कुछ अन्य प्रयोग
(i) Singular Countable Noun के पहले, जब इस Noun को first time प्रस्तुत (mention) किया जाता है और यह किसी विशेष person or thing को represent करता है
(a) He needs a book.
(b) She bought an ice-cream. 

(ii) ऐसे Singular Countable Noun से पहले प्रयोग करें जो पूरे वर्ग (Whole Class) को represent
(a) A car must be insured. 
(b) A child needs love.
(c) An ox is a load puller animal.

(iii) Mr./Mrs./Miss + surname से पहले (क्योंकि इसमें यह अन्तर्निहित होता है कि वह speaker से अपरिचित है)
(a) A Mr. Gupta came to meet you. 

(C) 'The' के प्रयोग निमन प्रकार हैं

(i) ऐसे object या group of objects जो unique हैं, से पहले the का प्रयोग करें the earth, the sea, the sky, the equator, the stars 
(ii) ऐसे nouns से पहले जो second time प्रयुक्त (mention) किये जाने के कारण definite हो गये हैं
(a) There was a kingThe king was very kind. 

(iii) ऐसे noun से पहले जिसमें phrase or clause जोड़कर उसे definite बना दिया जाता है
(a) I like the girl in blue. 
(b) The man with the flag is my uncle. 
(c) I know the habits of the boy that I met yesterday.
(d) He called me to the place where I met him earlier. 

(iv) Superlatives के पहले
(a) She is the best girl of the school.
(b) He is the most intelligent student of the school. 

(v) Ordinals से पहले
(a) Neil Armstrong was the first man who went into space.
(b) It will be completed by the second week of February. 

(vi) the + adjective व्यक्तियों के एक समूह को represent करता है।
(a) The rich should help the poor

(vii) कुछ निश्चित proper names of seas (सागर), rivers (नदी), groups of islands (द्वीप समूह), chains of mountains (पर्वत-श्रृंखला), plural names of countries (राष्ट्रों के बहुवचनात्मक नाम), deserts (मरुस्थल), regions (क्षेत्र) के पहले

(viii) समाचार पत्रों (newspapers), जहाजों (ships) के नामों से पहले -- 
the Times of India, the Titanic (ship) 

(ix) दिशा east/west etc. से पहले,जब  noun की तरह प्रयोग हो --
The sun rises in the east.

(x) Gulf/Bays, (खाड़ी) ,ocean (महासागर) , canal (नहर) ,waterfalls (जलप्रपात) etc. से पूर्व |
the gulf of Cambay,
the bay of Bengal,
the Indian ocean,
the Indira Gandhi Canal,
the Chulia waterfalls. 

(xi) the + plural surname का अर्थ है वह 'परिवार' the Guptas (गुप्ता परिवार), the Smiths (स्मिथ परिवार) 

(xii) Great Books के Names से पहले --
the Ramayan, the Geeta, the wings of Fire.

(xiii) Musical Instruments/groups के नाम से पहले
(a) She plays the harmonium daily... 

(xiv) Historical places/buildings के नाम से पहले --
the Red Fort, the Hawamahal. 

2. Demonstratives : This, That, These, Those 
This, That, These तथा Those संज्ञा (Noun) से पहले प्रयुक्त होकर उनके द्वारा निर्दिष्ट objects की ओर संकेत करते हैं। This और That का प्रयोग singular noun के लिए और These एवं Those का प्रयोग Plural Noun के लिए किया जाता है। इसके साथ ही This और These निकटवर्ती वस्तुओं के लिए तथा That और Those दूरवर्ती वस्तुओं के लिए प्रयुक्त होते हैं।
This book is mine. 
That book is yours. 
These books are mine.
Those books are yours. 

3. Possessive : My, Our, Your, His, Her, Its, Their
उपर्युक्त सभी Pronoun की possessive forms हैं। ये शब्द singular तथा plural noun से पूर्व प्रयुक्त होकर उनसे अपने सम्बन्ध का बोध कराते हैं।
My father was a famous doctor. 
Our school shows brilliant results every year. 
Your brother is absent today.
Their houses are newly built.

4. Distributives : Each, Every, Either, Neither
Each, Every, Either, Neither का प्रयोग एकवचन गणनीय संज्ञाओं (singular countable nouns) के पहले किया जाता है।
इनके साथ singular verb ही काम में ली जाती है।
Each का प्रयोग दो या दो से अधिक व्यक्तियों अथवा वस्तुओं के लिए तब किया जाता है जब संख्या सीमित और निश्चित हो। Every दो से अधिक व्यक्तियों अथवा वस्तुओं के लिए प्रयुक्त होता है जब संख्या भी अनिश्चित हो। Every एक Group के बारे में संकेत देता है।
Each player will play a game.
Each boy must have his own book. 
Every word of a good Astrologer is true.
Every member of parliament appreciated the proposal.

Either का अर्थ है - दोनों में से कोई भी एक। अतः दो में से किसी भी एक के लिए either का प्रयोग किया जाता है। Neither का अर्थ है - दोनों में से कोई भी नहीं। अतः जब दोनों में से कोई भी नहीं का अर्थ हो तब neither का प्रयोग करते हैं। Neither में नहीं (No) का अर्थ पहले से है अतः इन वाक्यों में no अथवा not का प्रयोग नहीं करते हैं।

5. Numerals : संख्या बताने वाले शब्द (Determiners)
1. some : इसका अर्थ है-a certain number अर्थात् 'कुछ'। 
(a) some का प्रयोग Countable Plural Noun (गण्यमान बहुवचन संज्ञा) से पूर्व करें।

(b) सकारात्मक वाक्य (affirmative sentences) में सामान्यतः Countable Plural Noun से पूर्व some of monti

(c) नकारात्मक-प्रश्नवाचक (negative-interrorgative) वाक्य में Countable Plural Noun से पूर्व some का use करें।
Don't you need some books? 

(d) ऐसे प्रश्नवाचक वाक्य (interrogative sentences) या imperative sentence जिसमें कोई प्रस्ताव (offer) हो या प्रार्थना (request) हो तो Countable Plural Noun से पूर्व some का use करें। .
Would/Will you like some sweets ?
Kindly, help me with some rupees. 

(e) Countable Singular Noun यदि अनिश्चित (unspecified) या अनजान (unknown) हो तो
इससे पूर्व some का use करें
Some boy has broken this glass.

(f) ऐसे प्रश्नवाचक वाक्य (interrogative sentences) में Countable Plural Noun से पूर्व some का use करें जिसका उत्तर 'हाँ' में मिलने की आशा है।
Has she received some books ? / Yes, she has.

(g) निश्चित संख्या जो 'लगभग (approximately) की sense दे रही हो, उससे पूर्व some का use करें।
There are some thirty students in the hall. 

2. Any : इसका अर्थ है a certain number अर्थात् 'कुछ' या 'कोई'।
(a) नकारात्मक वाक्य (negative sentence) में Singular Countable Noun (एकवचन गण्यमान संज्ञा) व Plural Countable Noun (बहुवचन गण्यमान संज्ञा) से पूर्व any का use करें।
She hasn’t any friend.
She hasn’t any matches.

(b) सामान्य प्रश्नवाचक वाक्य (ordinary interrogative sentence) में Singular Countable Noun से पूर्व any का use करें।
Do you need any book on grammar ?

(c) सकारात्मक वाक्य (affirmative sentence) में Countable Singular Noun से पूर्व any का - use करें। यदि any का अर्थ “practically every' (कोई भी) निकल रहा हो।
Any person can help the poor

(d) नकारात्मक क्रिया विशेषणों (negative adverbs) जैसे - hardly, scarcely, barely, never, - neither, nor, seldom, too आदि के पश्चात् Countable Singular Noun व Countable Plural Noun . से पूर्व any का use करें।

She has hardly any friend.
I have never composed any poems.
She has neither books nor any (notebooks).
She seldom sees any drama.
He is too dull to understand any poems.

(e) if या whether वाले वाक्य में Countable Singular Noun से पूर्व any का use करें।
Come to me if you need any book.
She asked whether you have any book.

(f) without' के पश्चात् any का use करें।
Books impart knowledge without any teacher

3. few, a few, the few
(1) few : यह नकारात्मक है और इसका अर्थ है not any (न के बराबर) किन्तु यह ‘nil' का अर्थ नहीं रखता है।
(a) वाक्य जिसमें 'न के बराबर' की sense हो तो Plural Countable Noun से पूर्व few का use करें।
All praise sacrifice but few people are ready for it.
Few cities of India have splendid, lush green trees. 

(2) a few : यह सकारात्मक है और इसका अर्थ है a small number अर्थात् 'कुछ ही'। 
(a) वाक्य जिसमें 'कुछ ही' की sense हो तो Plural Countable Noun से पूर्व a few का use करें।
A few people are happy in this world.
Only a few persons reach extraordinary height in life. 

(3) the few : इसका अर्थ है not many but all that are there अर्थात् 'बहुत अधिक तो नहीं किन्तु वहाँ उपलब्ध सभी कुछ'।
(a) वाक्य जिसमें 'वहाँ उपलब्ध सभी कुछ' (all that are there) की sense हो तो Plural Countable Noun से पूर्व the few का use करें।
She has gone through the few books she has. 

4. all, both
(1) all : इसका अर्थ है 'सभी' [entirely]. 
(a) कर्ता (subject) या क्रिया (verb) से पूर्व ।
All the world is a stage.

(2) Both : इसका अर्थ है-'each of two'. 
(a) Before a noun with a determiner
Both the students are equally cultured. 

(b) both.......and
I both play and swim daily. 

5. Many, several, various
(1) Many : इसका अर्थ है-a large number of. एक ही श्रेणी (category) की अधिक संख्या के लिए many का use करें। 

(a) Plural Countable Nouns के साथ many का use करें।
Many men mould their minds in life. 

(b) many of + determiner + noun
Many of the books in the library are worth reading. 

(c) How के साथ प्रश्नवाचक वाक्य में many का use करें।
How many men are happy in this world ? 

(2) Several : इसका अर्थ है-तीन से अधिक (more than three) अर्थात् 'कुछ' (some) किन्तु many से कम (but fewer than many)। एक ही श्रेणी (category) की सीमित (limited) संख्या के लिए several का use करें।

(3) Various : इसका अर्थ है— भाँति-भाँति की अनेक (of several types, but unlike one another)।
अलग-अलग श्रेणी (categories) की अधिक संख्या के लिए various का use करते हैं। 

(a) Plural Countable Noun से पूर्व ।
Various subjects are opted for studies. नोट-उदाहरणों द्वारा इनके प्रयोग में अन्तर समझें

Many books are on the table. [एक ही विषय पर अनेक पुस्तकें।
Various books are on the table. [भिन्न विषयों वाली अनेक पुस्तकें].
Several books are on the table. [एक ही विषय पर कुछ ही पुस्तकें] 

6. A good many, a great many, many an/a 
(1) a good many : इसका अर्थ है-पर्याप्त संख्या में। 
(a) Plural Countable Noun से पूर्व, पर्याप्तता के विषय में, a good many का use करें।
A good many volunteers are here. 

(2) a great many : इसका अर्थ है-'आवश्यकता से अधिक। 
(a) Plural Countable Noun से पूर्व, 'आवश्यकता से अधिक' होने पर, a great many का use करें।
A great many volunteers are here.

(3) Many an/a : इसका अर्थ है-'बहुत से' (a large number of)। 
(a) Singular Countable Noun से पूर्व many an/a का use करें।

7. No, Enough (1) No : इसका अर्थ है, 'कुछ भी नहीं' (not any)। 
(a) 'कुछ भी नहीं' के अर्थ में no का use करें।
She wants no book now. 

(b) no + plural nouns
There are no letters for you. 

(2) Enough : इसका अर्थ है, 'पर्याप्त' (as many as necessary) 
(a) पर्याप्त के sense में noun से पूर्व
She has enough dresses

8. More, fewer 
(1) More : इसका अर्थ है, 'और अधिक' (to a greater degree) 
(a) more + noun
I need more books on grammar.

(b) तुलना वाले वाक्य [comparative structure] में। ... 
This book is more interesting than that book.

9. Another, Other 
(1) Another : इसका अर्थ है, additional या alternative.

(a) Singular Countable Noun से पूर्व another का use करें।
She is to face another competitor. 

(2) Other : इसका अर्थ है, additional, different आदि ।
(a) Singular or Plural Countable Noun से पूर्व other का use करें। 
Don't you have other dresses.
Use your other foot.

10. A number of, a large number of, a lot of, lots of, plenty of का अर्थ है, 'अधिक' (many) 
(a) Plural Countable Noun से पूर्व इनका use करें।
I have a lot of/a number of/plenty of books. 

6. Quantifiers : मात्रा बताने वाले determiners.
(1) Some : इसका अर्थ है, 'कुछ' (a certain amount) 

(a) In affirmative sentences [साधारण वाक्य में)
Everybody needs some water everyday.

(b) In negative-interrogative sentences [नकारात्मक - प्रशनवाचक वाक्य में]
Doesn't everybody need some water everyday ? 

(c) In interrogative sentences [प्रश्नवाचक वाक्य] जिसमें प्रस्ताव' (offer) या प्रार्थना (request)
I Would/will you like to have some juice

(d) In imperative sentences (आज्ञात्मक वाक्य) with please or kindly.
Give the beggar some money, please. 

(e) In interrogative sentences जिसका उत्तर हाँ में मिलने की आशा हो।
Have you some gentleness? Yes, I have. 

(2) Any : इसका अर्थ है। 'कुछ' (a certain amount) 
(a) In negative sentences
She hasn't any gold. 

(b) In ordinary (सामान्य) interrogative sentences
Do you have any common sense

(c) नकारात्मक क्रिया विशेषण hardly, scarcely, barely, never, neither, nor, seldom, too के पश्चात्। 
The car has hardly / scarcely / barely any petrol in it. : 
Neither metal has any shining.
Nor does she have any diamond

(d) If या whether के साथ
If there is any rain, beings will have respite from heat. 

(e) without के पश्चात्
The earthquake passed on without any damage to property.

(3) Little : इसका अर्थ है, 'नगण्य' (not much) (uncountable के लिए प्रयोग करते हैं) 
(a) नकारात्मक sense में little का use करें।
There is little milk so you can't make tea.

(b) better व more से पूर्व
Your second suggestion is little (not much) better than the first one.
He was little (not much) more than a child when his father died. 

(c) expect, suspect, think, know आदि verb से पूर्व
People little expect the third world war.
We little think about the sudden events. 

(d) known, used आदि adjective से पूर्व
She is a little-known author.
It's a little-used path. 

(4) a little : इसका अर्थ है 'कुछ' (a small amount) 

(a) Verb के पश्चात्
It rained a little yesterday.

(1) What : इसका अर्थ है 'क्या'
