→ Need of Law: Laws are necessary in many situations, whether this be the market, office or factory so as to protect people from unfair practices. Private companies, contractors, business persons, in order to make higher profits, resort to unfair practices such as paying workers low wages, employing children for work, ignoring foe conditions of work, ignoring foe damage to foe environment and hence harm foe people around them.

→ Making, enforcing and upholding laws: Government Responsibility-It becomes the responsibility of the government to control the activities of private companies by making, enforcing and upholding laws so as to prevent unfair practices and ensure social justice. The* Indian Government has made such laws. The government has to make ‘appropriate laws’ and also has to enforce the law so that Right to Life is not violated. Laws that are weak and poorly enforced can cause serious harm, as the Bhopal gas tragedy showed.

→ Responsibilities of the general public in the field of law and social justice: While foe government has a leading role in this respect, people can exert pressure so that both private companies and foe government act in the interests of society.

→ New laws to protect the environment: In 1984 we had very few laws to protect the environment. The system of enforcing these laws was even weaker. That is why Union Carbide did not have to spend any money to tackle pollution. After foe Bhopal gas tragedy, foe Indian government introduced new laws on foe environment and henceforth, foe polluter was to be held accountable for the damage done to environment. The courts also gave a number of judgements upholding the right to a healthy environment as intrinsic to the Fundamental Right to Life. But the middle class people often do not take into account the suffering of the poor in the growing concern for the environment, which threaten the livelihood of many people. Therefore, people should raise their voice that everyone should benefit from a clean environment. Likewise, workers’ rights is an area where the situation is still very unfair. People must demand stronger law protecting workers’ interests so that the Right to Life is achieved for all.
