Chola rulers were active patrons of art. Chola temples were centre of craft production. Amongst the arts associated with temples, the making of bronze images was the most distinctive. The beautiful Nataraja figure was first conceived during the Chola empire. Bronze images are considered amongst the finest in the world. Most images made by the craftsmen were of deities.

The Chahamanas later known as the Chauhans ruled in areas around Ajmer and Delhi and tried to extend their rule but were defeated by the eastern Chalukyas of Gujarat and the Gahadavalas of western Uttar Pradesh. Their greatest ruler was Prithviraja III (better known as Prithviraj Chauhan).

Rich temples were targeted first when one ruler attacked another’s kingdom, because large temples were built to demonstrate power and resources. Hence to plunder the wealth and to prove themselves more powerful than other kings, temples were attacked often.

Write a note on ‘the rise of the Cholas’ and their agricultural life.
Answer: 
Rise of the Cholas:
The Cholas were a minor chiefly family known as the Muttaraiyar. They held power in the Kaveri delta. The family was subordinate to the Pallava kings of Kanchipuram. Vijayalaya belonged to the ancient chiefly family of the Cholas from Uraiyur. He captured the Kaveri delta which was under control of the Muttaraiyar in the middle of 9th century. He built the town of  Thanjavur and a temple for goddess Nishumbhasudini there.

His successors extended the empire and included the regions of the Pallavas and the Pandyas too. Rajaraja I is considered the greatest Chola ruler and ascended the throne in 985 CE and reorganised the administration. Rajaraja’s son Rajendra I continued his father’s policies and extended his empire up to the Ganga valley, Sri Lanka and south¬east Asia.

Agricultural life of Cholas: 
The ‘agricultural life’ of Chola period was very prosperous. The various channels of River Kaveri overflowed frequently and deposited fertile soil on the fields. In many areas two crops were grown in a year. By the 5th and 6th century, large scale cultivation started in the Kaveri valley as forests were cleared and levelled for creating more cultivable land. In the delta region, embankments were built to prevent flooding and canals were constructed to carry water to the fields. Artificial irrigation took place with the construction of wells and water tanks.

Describe the governance system of Chola rulers.
Answer: 
Chola’s Administration System: 
(i) The king was the most powerful person in the Chola kingdom. But he used to conduct the government work in consultation with his council of ministers and his priests.

(ii) The state was divided into provinces which were called Mandalams. Each mandalam was divided into several nadus. There were a certain number of villages in each Nadu, which were Called ‘Ur’.

(iii) The rule of each ‘Ur’ is governed by the villagers. Every ‘Ur’ (village) had a village council. The Gram Parishad or Gram Sabha-wns divided into many small committees to look after the various works of the village and the members of each committee used to look after each of the functions of the government.

(iv) The village council vand the Nadu performed several administrative functions including dispensing justice and collecting taxes.

(v) Rich peasants of the Vellala caste exercised considerable control over the affairs of the nadu under the supervision of the central Chola government. The Chola kings gave some rich landowners titles like muuendavelan (a velan or peasant serving three kings), araiyar (chief), etc. as markers of respect, and entrusted them with important offices of the state at the centre.
